If using an adequate filter like this, no need to boil it from a safety perspective. Boiling might change the taste though, if that's an issue ~ Lauren
For mine I picked up a 2liter bottle preform/vial. Like the plastic unblown up 2litter. Same thickness of the mini maybe 1.5” longer. Weight is pretty much the same. And threw out the preform standard bottle cap an screwed on a smart water bottle cap to the preform with the little blue spout an flip cap. But the little preform I heated up a mail an melted a small hole in the bottom. Than put a little coffee filter down in the bottom of it. An filled the vial with charcoal. So than I connect my sawyer to the dirty water bag. And the clean side tip of the sawyer mine can than push into the smart water bottle flip cap nozzle. So after the dirty water passes through the filter to be cleaned. It’s than going right into an through another charcoal filter basically to clean up any taste that would of been. An comes out of the hole I melted into the bottom of it. Can either drink it from there or fill a bottle from that end.
You'd probably need to keep track of it yourself,or you will know because it will become hard to clear out and get reasonable flow. This will be a looooong time though, unless you are regularly filtering really dirty water. ~ Ben
For 2 1/2 minutes straight it's you rotating the filter around and around pointing at the filter saying that water goes through the filter. It was hard to tolerate but I made it through that part.
We didn't have a demo model, and don't want to be selling used merchandise. There isn't much to see when in use, just water flowing from one side tot he other. ~ Ben
It won't filter out chemicals, you'd be best either trying to find a chemical free water source or adding flavours to the water to mask the chlorine taste. ~ Ben
In terms of drinking straight from the water source, straw style? Yeah, absolutely, just attach the straw extension that comes with it so you're not having to almost put your face in the creek! ~ Lauren
If you need to dip the straw in contaminated water and suck water through the filter, you need to put it on that end. It's then up to the individual to make sure they are vigilant with how they use the straw afterwards as it will have been in touch with unfiltered water. ~ Ben

How do you know when it reaches the lifetime limit?(although I may not reach it but I just want to know if I need to keep track of it myself?)

They should make each end of the filter a different colour.
Might be a future upgrade, the arrow on the side makes it pretty clear though. ~ Ben
What water testing strips do you suggest to confirm the filter is working properly?

I know it's a different form factor and the Sawyer seems more versatile, but can this be used as an alternative to the Lifestraw?

must prefilter sedememt or you will kill filter
You can backflush the filters for any sediment or debris, but to a point. The clearer the water the better - for sure.
