Fun fact for you Crypt, the second verse of Suic*de was written very recently after the first Knox interview because he got Ren talking about his friend Joe and it brought the pain back up in a really beautiful inspirational way. So grateful for them both, since it lead to this. RIP Ren’s freckled angel :(

Ren wanted Seven Sins to reflect his illness, the struggles and he paints us a picture of where his head was, his thoughts and fears that lead him up to this point. The beginning is spoken in Welsh & is kind of a living eulogy, Loosely translated from Welsh he says:
    sickness is my teacher
    it broke my smile
    my bones feel old
    here lays Ren's body.

With regard to the songs on the album which have been previously released: The "drip release" strategy is brilliant. Ren has added so many fans (myself included) who would have said "I'm not "into" rap" before the journey that Ren's taken us on. We've had time to absorb the songs, and learn about rap not only as a musical style, but about the cultural aspects of several different rap styles (shout out to all the reactors that have helped educate). We've been able to take time to digest and identify what we do/don't like and frequently completely change our minds as we've sat with it.

I am very selective about my Rap artists. It takes clever stuff for me to get hooked. There’s a lot of crap rap in the world in my humble opinion (which in the end all sound the same) which makes finding hidden gems hard. Ren has a palette of being inspired by the whole of the culture from its roots to the most recent gems plus his own original jive which is multifaceted. That is what makes it too good.

Since you enjoyed the ending of "Suicide" then you should check out Ren's Live performance of "For Joe". You see Joe was his best friend & the person who he was talking about in that spoken word section at the end of Suicide. After recording "Suicide" he felt that it was unfinished and as a tribute for the 13yr anniversary of his friends passing, he decided to complete the song in Joe's honor. Also, Ren held a fundraiser and raised some money for the volunteer Maritime Rescue Force from his home town, who searched for weeks for Joe's body. It was recorded live at night, overlooking the city lights of Calgary. That's where Ren is receiving treatment for the Lyme D which went misdiagnosed and untreated for years, causing damage to his body, auto immune and brain. It's a beautiful tribute.😪.

He has an underlying theme of the pendulum’s swinging from dark to light. The metaphor applies to his mental health struggles and how he describes his experience with that struggle. So the album swing back and forth between dark and light. Pretty sure lol.

Ren, produced this album in order to gave sonethinf to release while he was in treatment in Canada, thinking he woukd be there 3 months They found so much more damage that he will be there the full year! So he kept releasing songs to keep fans engaged, while working on new stuff as he could. He had no idea tha he woyld blow up like this. It wasn't really his choice to do it like this. Next album will be song and instrumentals, tineless, back to his roots. It will be all new. He us talking about finding a profucer he loves and doing it all at once and then releasing it next year. Has most of it written niw and some videos shot in Canada. So much depends on his health. I just am so happy to have this #1 album. His whole life is not knowing what to expect. Now that yhis album is out, he will lean into the most difficult part of treatment. His health needs priority now.

NP with him releasing most of the tracks in the weeks before the album release. This way you already know most of what you are getting. All the more impressive that it became a no. 1 in the UK album sales charts. Many fans including me just buy the album to push Rens success with it and to celebrate the music we love. For the last day counting for the release week stats, he even released a special edition digital download for just 5 pounds including an unreleased track and some instrumentals. Clever marketing is clearly one of his many skills too!

Loved this. My take on Love Music pt 4 is they reflect Lust ( one of the 7 sins) and still a reflection of being a sick boi. Uninvited is also a double as it's uninvited to a rap album. Massochist is a bit of wrath and self doubt, which comes from being so low in life ans is again is a form of being mentally ill as is being Loco. What you Want reflects Pride. Money game 3 reflects Greed and gluttony. So in one way or another its all about Sin and being sick. I love it

Mixed and mastered by Fred Miller.
Ren says he's agnostic. He says he uses religious imagery because of his familiarity with it.
Insofar as most of the songs being released already, it didn't affect my enjoyment of the album in the least. In fact, I liked learning in what order he placed them.

Also, a Masochist is some one who enjoys pain.

I feel like the first half and second half both represent the theme and title “sick boi”. The first half is talking more about his mental and physical health and being a sick boi in that aspect. The second half is him being “sick” on the beat with his rap and production. Ren talks often on the concept of the light and the dark within all of us and I feel like the album portrays this well too with the first half being heavier darker topics and the second half being fun light and bouncy. Epic reaction 🙌🏼

The beginning of “Seven Sins” is sung in Welsh.
Ren said he is agnostic, though he likes religion imagery and stories, stating he enjoys hearing how others explain the divine.
A masochist is someone who gets pleasure from self-pain (not always sexual). This song was written during a really dark time in his life, where he wanted to “kill” off everything (metaphorically) including his support systems, which would only hurt himself.

Thanks for this reaction! My favourite songs are Seven Sins and Lost All Faith but I love the whole album. I can totally understand why Ren released so many of the songs ahead of time. Because he is independent and can't tour or perform, he needed to raise awareness of his music and this was a genius way to do that. Looking forward to his next album, which is going to be all singing rather than rap. I prefer the method of releasing tracks before the album. For one, I can't see why anyone would have reason to feel cheated considering that Ren made the album literally as cheap as he possibly could for the sales to still count toward the charts. He would have made it even less than that if he could have. Anyone who feels cheated at paying $5-6 for an hour long digital album full of songs, half of which, they got to hear ahead of time to be sure they liked them probably isn't someone who would be a fan of Ren anyway.
Great reaction, love that you took the time to dig into it. I saw the progression of the album from dark to light and then to a bit off the chain as fitting for Ren, considering his struggle with accepting that the dark and the light coexist and that sometimes it makes you feel crazy, but if you can accept it and use it for good, put passion behind it, it all has meaning. I think that's why ending with Sick Boi 2 (on the first drop of the album...Casltes Made of Sand on the 2nd release is brilliant, too) is fitting, because Sick Boi 2 is sort of a call to action and arms against a society that values money over kin ("are you like me, are you in?)
Seven Sins is an album all of its own. 😂 I hope he ends up being able to make a video for it like he wants to.
His next album is going to be totally different. More singing. I can't wait! 🎉

Good point/question about the way the songs were released, that is, some of them being earlier than the album release date. It doesn't bother me that many were released earlier than others. I don't like when long-established bands/artists re-release a song or two on another album, without even remixing them. Thanks for this massive video.

this is a bit befuddled, so let me explain: 'For Joe' starts with the final section of 'Su*c*de', a section that he added just after an interview, days, if that, prior to releasing the song. 'For Joe' also includes verses from 'Domino' and 'Freckled Angels', all three of them are woven beautifully with Nina Simone-esque vocals to make an extremely powerful song. I agree that it's well worth the watch. I've heard it a few dozen times now, and I still tear up every time I watch a reaction to it.

I think a lot of us have decided Ren is his own genre. We never know what to expect and love him for it. In a world of cookie cutter radio nonsense, he brings a fresh energy that was needed.

This was really cool, man. Highlight for me was you rapping with Ren in Wicked Ways.
My favorite song on the album is Illest Of Our Time, with Seven Sins as a close second. I also really liked Uninvited, heh. I like the unapologeticness of it. Like "Yeah, I'm gonna write an ear-worm about casual sex, and you're never gonna unhear it 'cause it's dope as shit."

Love your break downs and knowledge on little things here and there that I hadn't previously caught. So happy we got you down the Ren Rabbit Hole with us. He's a force! Love ya'll both! 🔥

I see this album a a whole progression … where life comes back to ren but the sickness still remains but is integrated into life. All those happier and cheeky songs in second part just make more sense that way ;)

Sick Boi is the culmination of Ren's life long desire to release a Hip Hip album, the songs were written over a period of 3 years 2020-2023, as Ren knew he was going to be in Canada for his treatment in 2023 he decided to release music throughout the year culminating in the album release.. tbh as he couldn't promote the album any other way he had to release the singles individually, did it take away from the album release? I don't think so, I was so hyped for the album I pre-ordered it at the first opportunity the first music album I have purchased in over a decade!
The spoken word poetry at the end of suicide was recorded in 2023, after Ren did an interview with Knox Hill, Ren spoke about Joe his friend who leapt from the bridge, releasing Suicide was worrying Ren, he felt the song was possibly missing something and after the Knox interview Ren sat at his piano in Canada and wrote/recorded the spoken word part line by line, the tears you hear are genuine and Ren left them in deliberately. He got his videographer to fly to Canada and they recorded the additional video the same week and he then sent the audio back to the UK to be mastered and added to Suicide (a song and video that was already mastered and ready for release).

Gonna go with hard disagree on the wrap-up vibe.
"If the songs are already out there..." This is one of the first indepenedent musicians I've ever seen promote and commit to a steady ramp-up of releases prior to their album drop. Personally, I think it was GENIOUS marketing. It provides something for folks who've heard the songs before and creates a completely unique experience for people who've never heard a single song.
I think it was a BRILLIANT album, in terms of lyrical perception and tack-to-track immersions. I could see this album on Broadway, with each song acting as it's own stand-alone scene, that comes together to tell an incredible, powerful, very human story.
I think it's one of the most cohesive releases I've ever seen, and I really don't understand the other perspective, but I respect it. :)

with regards to the album spacing, you actually nailed it. The album 'ends' at su*c*de, take that for what you will, but Ren warned us just prior to release of those last songs that he was just experimenting with it and having fun making and producing what we hear. so 100% you got that, almost verbatim.
The two exceptions here are what you want, which was release much earlier, and lost all faith, which was released after that warning, but I think it's evident why they're placed where they are. And yes, 100% his call backs, his progression, all of it, is thought out, and done with meaning. And he expressed that specifically after his release of murderer, saying something along the lines of 'it's all done with purpose, it's all part of a bigger picture, there's a method to the madness'. with that last bit even making it onto the album in act two.
Personally, I think he's representing, to himself, what his own journey feels like. consider this, If the album "ends" where I mentioned, what comes after? birds chirping and zen? Is he in heaven? Did he pass gods test? Is it [loco] for him to think that? It's not showing off, he didn't make this for us, he made it for him. "These mantras I'm reciting" Even the name of the album is about him. I don't mean it's his vanity, I mean it's his journal.

The whole pop vibe of uninvited is on purpose of course. Putting out the lustiest track of the album with a lot of progressive innuendo done in a masterful banter in and out. ;)
