I love the way these guys have so much to say without having to resort to the altissimo register, maybe its not a modern approach but the effortless execution as well as the content of all of those passages must be admired by all who appreciate good jazz
It’s the BEST approach. All that altissimo is often a showboat that goes nowhere. If you can’t play the horn pretty where it is, then what’s the point? These guys DO
Let me tell you a Scott anecdote- Flip Phillips gave him a bear hug one night- “why”? “Because you played the horn right- there was a guy here last night screaming all over the horn, it was disastrous”
Great playing from the two tenors and what a rhythm section. I just love Steve Brown's work, tasteful, listening and swings like mad. Plays for the band and not for himself.
Man, oh man. You lucky person! Harry Allen is one of the best players I've ever heard. This style isn't my favorite, but I've studied it a lot, and Harry's inventiveness is amazing...just when you think you've heard every possibility, Harry lays out about ten more! Marvelous.
Two quite different sounds! Both absorbingly inventive and swinging. Scott is possibly the most lyrical ballad player around and shows how he thinks as he plays. To say one is more proficient than the other is critically naive. Might as well say Paul Desmond is more "proficient'than Johnny Hodges! Pointless and musically not evidence based.
I met and saw Harry Allen perform in person and he is a truly incredible person. He was talking about he knew Scott's style inside-out because Scott was his main inspiration as a kid, so they were a perfect complement to each other. It's an amazing dream-come-true story! He also discussed how much he loved Ben Webster and you can totally see that here :)
I saw them both separately this week. Harry Allen with Jim Galloway and Scott Hamilton at Quotes (with CJQ) last night at Quotes on King St. in Toronto. Both excellent, but S.H. handles his instrustrument like a love of his life! One of the best sax players alive.
You've got another quote at 2:55: Pick-A-Rib, recorded by Benny Goodman with Hampton, Wilson and Krupa. Hurray for Scott Hamilton and Harry Allen This video is amazing! The bass player is wonderful.
I hope that you have found Scott playing with Joan Chamorro and the kids of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band on TH-cam. He continues with that sound and inspires a new generation over in Barcelona.
I went to Rutgers with him and Ralph Bowen. Harry not only blows his face off, but he even won against me in chocolate milk drinking contests... you'll have to ask him about that... LOL Terrific playing!
I like the way Harrys hand movements are very minimal. One of the marks of a great player. Both are great players particularly like the sound of that horn harrys got in his hand.
That guy in the black suit is horrifyingly good. Scott Hamilton plays great, but Harry Allen is a friggin' force of nature. You can see how the rest of the guys are digging his playing, Scott included. Granted, Harry Allen looks kinda funny, but he's one of the very best guys out there.
Scott is great, but I think if you were to listen to this without watching it, you would hear that Harry Allen is the more proficient of the two. I wouldn't say "better", that's a subjective judgement, but as far as virtuosity, Allen has the distinct advantage. And I think Scott Hamilton would agree with that. Harry Allen is probably the most underrated "name" player out there.
Sure he may or may not have more technical skills. We may never know though because Scott's musicality and lyricism makes it so he'll never need to go the "wow, chops" area. Everything he plays is vocal and memorable. For Harry, most of what he plays is.
It's kind of funny, I love Scott Hamilton but never really cared for Harry Allen. The more I watch this the more I like and appreciate his ideas, and the way he compliments Scott.
But you do have to ask...70 years from now, will old white guys be trying to imitate David Murray or Tupac or some rapper using the same basic lick vocabulary mixed up in a blender? I hope not. This music is not offensive but it's quite boring. At least Zoot Sims had some original licks.
These are two fabulous jazz tenors!! Bravo! Thanks for the post!

Agreed!

totally agree!...

These guys have total control of their instruments. How refreshing that the music of Al and Zoot , et al, is in good hands!

Harry Allen and Scott Hamilton are wonderfully talented. I haven't seen them in over twenty years. Keep it going fellows.
Dream pair.
Diggin' the sax duo transcription of Ben Webster's original solo after the in-head.

One of the best sax players alive.
I was having a smoke with Scott Hamilton in between sets at the Bulls Head, London last week.
How cool is that!!!
Had lost sight of Scott Hamilton, he did marvellous things with Ruby Braff
Both great players and both downtoearth "name" guys, no attitude!
Hope to see them both in Toronto again!
One of the best jazz videos I've seen on TH-cam. Thanks for posting this.

Great music!
Thanx for uploading.
Looking forward to seeing Scott Hamilton again at the Brecon Jazz Festival, 2019
Thanks for the post. Gadz, you could spend eternity on u-tube. And thats just in one genre
outstanding :-)
Love Scott on sax, such a warm tone ,class indeed
I hope that you have found Scott playing with Joan Chamorro and the kids of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band on TH-cam. He continues with that sound and inspires a new generation over in Barcelona.
No words necessary.... just this:
;-)
Scott and Harry could hold their own against anyone.
@Roboviewer Al Cohn actually played with Scott Hamilton and has praised him in interviews as one of his favorite younger players.
This is sublime times two!
Superb!
fabulous stuff
I went to Rutgers with him and Ralph Bowen. Harry not only blows his face off, but he even won against me in chocolate milk drinking contests... you'll have to ask him about that... LOL Terrific playing!
I used to play at The Bulls Head with Willie Garnett when I lived there '97-2000!
killing.
It's the best Jazz club in London!
Nice one! :-)
great guys ... :)

Yeah i think it’s cause that style of playing is considered “old school” but it’s horrifically hard to do it lmao

I went to school with Harry...I played with him in Stage Band.
2 Giants!!
I agree. Nothing like that in America.
if I played with a baritone read in a tenor mp I might be able to play like harry then I would wake up and fall out of bed
He certainly has come a long way. He was excellent in high school, too.
I graduated from MGSA with him - he was awesome then!
how can you falt this good add for otto link m p
That Joe Henderson solo is so great.
CamTheCat u
@Roboviewer It's a tribute. They don't play licks all the time.
Zoot would be pleased.
HARRY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dave Green and Charlie Watts were neighbours when growing up in London after the war.
They are reminiscent of the Hawkins/ Byas tenor battles
Swinging Mr Ben solo , wail ,wail
I know the bass player is Dave Green and the drummer is Steve Brown, but does anyone know who is on keys?
lancejjones nb
Ronnie Orange
It says who the pianist is in the info box, does no one read these details!
++++!!!!
Two great blower´s but I can not understand how Harry can have the mouthpeace in that way
It's kind of funny, I love Scott Hamilton but never really cared for Harry Allen. The more I watch this the more I like and appreciate his ideas, and the way he compliments Scott.
@terrryc Is that comment really necessary?
スインク"、リズム感の演奏しいいね\(^o^)/
If this is not to swing..where is swing?
Haha, that drummer has got quite the shnoz...But this video still kicks ass. Long live the throw-back swingers!
tenors lil' rhody style!
Seriously? Definitely tuff stuff.
@terrryc You should have tried to play like an Old Black Man. ;)
That guy in the black suit is so stiff lol
This Bass Player has big ears for counter point.
But you do have to ask...70 years from now, will old
