    I watched a brown chase my rooster tail for almost 20 feet before striking it. He came out from the under cut bankline and followed it across the whole "pool" area I was fishing. I paused a second to let it sink more before it got too close to me to set the hook and he struck it on the fall. One of my most memorable catches yet. Tight lines Ethan, that brownie strike close to you was awesome to watch!

    You're a good man, Charlie Brown, for picking up the trash! I always try to leave a fishing spot better than I found it. Especially with line which can be so harmful to the other hundreds of millions of critters on the planet. Sometimes I do more picking up than I do catching fish, but that's ok because I leave feeling good even with the skunk trailing me and often a few lures to add to the collection.

    My current trout set up is a 7 foot Okuma Celilo and a Okuma Safina Pro spa-10. Bought both the rod and reel off Amazon, for under 60$. I like to use 5lb Power Pro(original) moss green braid with a 4 to 6lb floro leader when needed. I try to budget fish as effectively as possible and this combo has done me well!

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds like a dope setup. You like the 5lb powerpro braid? I tried 6lb spiderwire and hated it (but it is also spiderwire which is complete dookie).

    • @InTheWoodsToday
      @InTheWoodsToday 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do like it but have little braid experience to begin with just this year. Ive never tried the spiderwire, but the Power Pro 5lb is a nice small diameter with remarkable strength. I hope to use it for panfishing as well but probably buy 3lb for that.

    • @InTheWoodsToday
      @InTheWoodsToday 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly only used Power Pro because of another youtube fisherman, Richard Gene The Fishing Machine. He really knows his stuff and ive seen many videos with him using it in creeks and rivers.

    Speaking from a bass anglers perspective I would love to trout fish. I believe it is so much more fun than bass fishing especially if you can find a creek like this one in the middle of winter. Problem is you need to use super thin clear line wich is hard for me to see. So when I trout fish I get many twists in the line and fail to see them. Then when I cast I get a big line blow up. I guess it takes a certain breed of people to be trout fishermen. My hats off to you

    Your video is very informative, you were really helpful in me making a final decision on reel size you are right a 20 is a little small.. I had ordered a Penn Battle lll 2500 reel to pair with my six foot Ugly Stik Elite rod I’ve been accustomed to using a 20/2000 series reel since I was younger but from what I read the 2500 is just a upgraded two thousand series with a bigger spool & bigger gear setup in the housing, I wanted to upgrade because I fish for stocked trout during the winter & fall and I target native panfish & bass throughout the summer.. The problem I ran into is that the last couple of summers I’ve been hooking into some bigger bass and it’s been having me questioning the limits of a 2 series reel..

      Same question

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey fellas! Definitely don't need to go with an UL rod. I would say a Light rod is the ideal power but anything from an UL to a ML would work fine. Once you get above a ML, the rod may be a little overpowered for the trout and you'll likely pull hooks out of their mouth due to the heavier blank on the rod.

    • @FishAnything

  • @nickt423
    @nickt423 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I know some people have competing theories on moderate vs fast action for trout fishing. The fast action tends to have better sensitivity while the moderate can throw tiny lures better and keeps you from ripping the lure/hook out when you have them hooked

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah i agree with that. I guess it really depends on your style and what you’ll be throwing most. If you use single hooked baits, fast is probably better. If trebles, maybe a moderate or Mod Fast. 🤷🏼‍♂️ regardless I like this rod a lot!

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 5'6 should be a great length for you - I don't think you need to go longer unless you really want more casting distance or ability to move more line. In small creeks like this, short rods typically give you more portability and they work better.

    I use an HMX 5'6" fast action for most trout outings. It's pin-point accurate with spinners and jigs that weigh 1/32nd of an ounce and 1/4 oz lures? HA!!! I can hit your house from mine and I live in Connecticut! I can fish streams and rivers with it however, i also have a fish eagle 7' that's slower action (moderate) for lobbing bobbers and live bait, pink works, dry flies etc. SOME streams, 5'6" is pushing the length but to me it's a great all arounder. 2 piece for going through the woods easier. I gave up fly fishing when i wound up with 12 rods =X. Most of the time i was going for native trout and wound up using a 6' fly rod and roll casting. Well, I can do near the same with a clear bobber and flies as well. dry, streamers, nymphs.. yeah... simpler for me as i'm aging, can't see for sh*t and losing dexterity in my broken hands... 6' moderate-fast is a good mix, i just prefer the accuracy for fast waters which i love to fish. It's when fishing with others i wind up in a slower place where live bait like worms, minnows and the like i'll use the 'lobber'. Many freak out when we're going for bass and i'm using a 5'6" trout rig with 4# test (2# on the other spool). 5# cats? it's a fantastic play! 3# bass? no problemmo if the drag is set right. I caught an 8# brown breeder on that rig with the 4# test though i'd say landing fish is easier with a moderate action rod. there's more play. I'm torn really as the exact rod you're using (6 footer) I was going to get until i found the hmx.. I CAN shoot a 1/32nd ounce lure into a 12" hole but landing? I DO wish I opted for the fish eagle with a more moderate action. Maybe something you can test and do a video on? Moderate vs fast action.. pros and cons?
    Cheers and thanks for the video! (I caught ya because I left my reel on the roof as a family emergency came up and am looking for a replacement reel...lol)

    What trout rod/length do u recommend for more open lake water sorta setting.
    Would a 7ft beat a 6ft in your eyes for distance?
    Looking to cast small stuff like u do but want distance for other things as well.
    Also, i like to cast spoons n spinners up to 1/8oz to 3/16oz size and smaller if the rod can manage.
    Cheers man.

    I have a (probably stupid) question. Im just getting back into fishing after about 15 years off. what are the signs to look for with a good fishing pole+reel? I got a Penn for myself, by the request of my brother for salt water fishing and its fantastic, but I dont know what makes it good. I went to Bass Pro to get a smaller reel similar to yours, but it SUCKS bad. The line gets backlashed every other throw, it feels weak, and I just dont like it. There was a significant price difference with it being $40, and the one you linked $100. I also got a rod, that is 6 feet, and 7 feet, and they are medium, and mideium heavy. I know that you need a much smaller rod for trout, but aside from just looking for more expensive rods and reels, what are the signs that I need to look for to tell me its good?
    Another(probably dumb) question, is aside from the shitty reel I got, I also noticed I cant cast it that far. What is the problem with it? I figured I didnt have enough weight on it, since I was only using a lure, but you're casting it way farther than I was able to. Is it the line making it too heavy? I believe the line I tried using was 8 or 10lb, but thats not too different from what you were using so idk what else it could be.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trevor these are definitely not stupid questions... In my opinion, a good reel is based on high quality components & a brand that has consistently put out good products over time. I don't think you can go wrong with Shimano or Daiwa for any reel. Pflueger makes good spinning reels for a budget price as well.
      Regarding issues with casting & line twist, I would say that is usually more of a line problem than a reel. A good reel will feature a solid drag system & will hold up over the years but if you choose the wrong line, you may still have issues.
      Let me know how I can help you out more. This is a pretty broad discussion area so I will happily help as we get a little fine-tuned on what you're specifically looking for.

    • @smalltown89
      @smalltown89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishAnything So after I wrote this, I looked at the package the line came in and I actually chose 20lb line :/ so that had to be the problem lol. My surf setup used a 40 or 50lb line, but I use a 5 or 6oz sinker plus larger bait, so the weight of the line doesnt affect me since I have all the weight to help cast it. Going fishing for trout or bass in rivers and lakes however, I have to be more precise with my gear since I dont use such heavy weights and bait. Regarding the "not casting" issue, you said what I was thinking, which is that it was an issue with the line itself and not the reel, so that helps me out there. Regarding what to look for with gear though, I was just looking to know what features to look for when choosing the reel. I have no idea how many ball bearings are "good". I also see some reels have "high end Japanese ball bearings" and then some just say ball bearings. Not sure what the difference really is.
