Best song on the album, imho. It really shows his influences of Knopfler, Cale and the Grateful Dead, and yet his own voice shines through in both the writing and performance. Super tasteful all around. Great job again, Michael!
My favorite is probably I Guess I Just Feel Like. Followed by All I Want Is To Be With You. Followed by Til The Right One Comes. All of those have understated but absolutely killer guitar parts. Especially All I Want Is To Be With You.
I think it's more in line with Peter Green but I guess everyone sees something, it's what this whole album was about, to make you feel like somehow you know every song but all songs are new
I never cared for John Mayer back when I was in high school and he emerged on the scene. Songs like "No Such Thing" and "Your Body is a Wonderland" grinded against the rock aesthetic my buddies and I worshipped when we'd sit around and watch the Woodstock documentary over and over. Now, as an adult, I've come to appreciate his diversity and skill as a guitar player and singer/songwriter and his ability to shift from pop icon to jam band rocker. Impressive work on his part. I found it interesting how Rick Beato referred to him as the "last guitar god" or something like that, as he seems to be the last guitar-centered musician that can fill a stadium. I also liked how Mayer handled Mary Spender finishing "Last Train Home" before he'd even released it. Class act, there! Thanks for the content! Amazing stuff as always
I think in addition to everything you said here being spot on, what makes him able to have the success he continues to have to this day is his ability to insert his guitar mastery and as you said jam band guitar prowess into his music almost covertly. His music over time has been able to stay relevant by not relying on guitar driven riffs but by drenching a lot of his work with it discretely. Many of his fans may consider him very much a pop act and not know much about his guitar ability (though no doubt he has a massive guitar fan following to be sure). It’s why many people, myself included, don’t appreciate what he has to offer until they really pay attention or someone else focuses you attention to him.
I certainly wouldn't consider myself a big fan but I definitely respect him as basically the only modern muscian to make guitar centric music that's also extremely popular. I really like lots of his music for my own guitar skills and developing my playing too. For my personal tastes though as a music listener I wish his songs had a bit more edge to them, it's always just so safe and bland and his lyrics are so cheesy and feel impersonal and fake.
John Mayer balance's his melodicness with his guitar chops it makes such catchy songs. Ive been to one of John Mayer's concerts years ago and his sound people are the best, great mix.
yeah dude, there are some really great young guys out there, Mayer, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, Gary clark jr, there are not as much as before but we still have hope
I know very little about guitar playing and would always shy away from guitarists going off on long riffs. And then I listened to John . You explain so well about his use of melody throughout a riff. It's what kept me drawn to his music and now I can't wait for those parts, the longer the better. It's mesmerizing.
I believe this is the performance that introduced me to John. I had not heard of him before but since I watch Colbert, this popped into my list. Decided to give it a try and was immediately blown away. Been a fan ever since. Love this tune.
YES I just spent like three days learning the parts for this and was having such a blast ! So refreshing to see this after that exploration, deeper than I ever knew!
I geeked out really hard when I watched this performance the first time right where you did around the 21 minute mark--where he hit that huge slide down on the third string seemingly out of nowhere. Sob Rock is not my favorite album of his, but, seeing you analyze this performance really helps me appreciate the genius of his craft. The dude never stops learning, growing, and challenging himself.
great video. JM is a modern day blues guitar master who is also a mainstream artist, not an easy feat. ive grown more and more to appreciate him and his amazing feel and melodicism. when i was younger i was into more flashy and technical playing, but now i just love it when i hear a dude make the guitar literally sing. and Knopfler and JJ Cale influence all over this one.

That said, for some reason, I feel compelled to comment that you have a tendency to initially interplay passing notes in a line as major rather than minor. I don’t know nearly enough to say yes it’s a major note in that particular scale, or if it just seems to function as one in terms of the passing note. It kind of drove me nuts. Which is ridiculous on my part. I don’t know nearly what you know, I just heard it. Def like the video, the song, and how you teach. I wasn’t able to take in nearly as much as you laid out, but did understand and learn some.

Anytime I hear someone talk trash about John's playing, I know they know nothing about guitar. Or the ones that base his playing, on pop songs they hear on the radio. IMO, John Mayer is the best to ever do it. There is nothing he can't do, whether it be a pop song, blues jam, psychedelic rock and everything in between.

Spectacular. Thanks so much. I've been working on C major 3 string triads. I couldn't follow everything, but I was able to follow a lot of it and will return to work on what I missed to learn more. What made this exceptional for me was its "simplicity" and tempo. Because Mayer and you focused on the segments and connections, it felt like you unlocked a lot of the fretboard for me. I'm struck by how great musicians make great music out of basic building blocks. And how learning a relatively simple song can reveal that architecture even to someone at my level, when someone at your level explains what is happening. Lots of great art is simple, once the artist puts it together for us. Thanks again. An aha moment.
