First Train over the New Arch Bridge in Letchworth State Park!

  • Well the day has finally arrived when the Norfolk and Southern Rail Road has abandoned the old 142 1/2 year old Iron Trestle and switched their tracks over to the new Arch Bridge just 70 feet away from the old Trestle. This video shows the first train to approach and go out onto the new bridge. This was a very historic event as the last time a new bridge was first crossed was in 1875. At the beginning of the video you will hear the warning whistle and see the engines emerge from the neighboring woods as it makes its way into a tight turn before crossing the bridge. I hope you enjoy this historic look at this first crossing!

      They were preparing to stop the train on the bridge for the rail road photographer to take pictures of the track crew and other Norfolk and Southern people involved in the bridge project. They will pick up speed soon.

    Thanks for making this great video. I have never seen such a Sharp 90 degree intense railroad curve in my life. I didn't realize railroad trains can go around such sharp turns and from reading the comments it seems like you say there is one on each end of the tressel?? So do the tracks head north and south along the river and then cross at the middle??

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those curves definitely slow the trains down as they approach the bridge. The line actually runs East and West but it is not a true East and West. Trains coming from Buffalo actually run Southeast. The curve you saw in this video wasn't always this sharp. Back in 1852 when they first set down tracks here, the curve approaching the bridge was much more gradual, but back around 1880 they moved the tracks to there present location.

      The old one served it's while, dismantled and a new one built, no catastrophic collapse and disruption of no crossing so all is well Also the waterfall head will continue to advance upstream which would destroy the original so having a single arch is better for resilience

    In the description you mentioned "tight turn". Yes'r you are correct. That must be the absolute minimum radius the undercarriage can negotiate. I'd say the same slow speed need be used every time lest the Norfolk Southern end up sideways like my Lionel. :) Thanks for the update.

    • @Paleoman52

      They were told to make lots of noise by the dispatcher as there were a lot of workers and photographers around, plus I think the train crew was enjoying the experience of being the first train to cross the new bridge. The engineer that designed this bridge did an awesome job. It will really blends in nicely into its surroundings once they paint all the bolt plates to match the bridge color it will look better.

    • @Paleoman52

      I believe that the train that passed over the bridge Sunday about 4:40pm was the last daylight train over the bridge. I returned around 7:30pm with John Kucko and saw a train pass in the dark. The last train that did pass over was around 1:15am. The track crews came in around 5am and made the cut on both ends of the old bridge and spliced the tracks to the new bridge before 10am that morning.

      They do about 25 to 30 MPH over the new bridge now, this was the first train to go out onto the new bridge and they were doing a photo shoot of this, so that is why it is so slow. They could go much faster across but the trains are restricted by the curves on each end.

      It was the first train to cross so I would consider it a test run. They will pick the speed up soon, this train was slow so the Norfolk and Southern people could take some photos of this first train with the track crew and other NS people involved in the project. Max speed eventually will be around 35 MPH even though the bridge could handle speeds over 50 MPH. Their only restrictions are the tight curves on each end of the bridge which causes them to cross at a lower speed.

    America needs a new freight rail bridge to replace the Poughkeepsie bridge in order to eliminate the Selkirk Hurdle. Our elected politicians were too stupid to include a Hudson River rail crossing into the new recently completed Tappan Zee bridge project.
