Fond memories of my mother singing this when I was a child. Precious!

My grandmother would sing it too. Think there are the full lyrics on the 'net, but as I remember they're the American version, with 'depot' replacing station. Nice to know the child wasn't put off, as a kindly passenger organised a collection. Fond memories, a pleasure to share them!

@@tiga4180 I've heard a few different people on youtube sing this. The Everly Brothers sing it also. I think this is one of the oldest version. There are some videos with the lyrics to it but I didn't realize some changed the words.

This song is named the Lightning Express and you can find many more renditions by typing that in TH-cam search. The Everly Brothers did one version but there are many more.

Thanks, have done such a search & found several versions. Tho' I like the 'period style' of my version I find it incomplete having only one verse. I is heartening to hear the longer versions & learn the poor boy was not put off the train & Mr. Conductor had a heart after all!

I always thought this was an Everly Brothers song, as their version is the only one I've heard up to this point, when I was a wee bairn in the 60's... Their melody is also different, although the lyrics are identical. The first "tearjerker" song I ever heard in my life, narrated by my mother (bless her departed soul) as it played...

My grandmother used to sing this (and many other tearjerkers & comic songs too) & that started my collecting records! I think the English version wins on sentiment, but I was pleased when I first heard the 'Everley Brothers' version, as we get to know the outcome. Thanks for viewing & your interesting comment.

I wish I could hear this clearer. My mom, who passed away in August used to sing part of this to me.

My grandmother used to sing this. As for the clarity, it may be better to listen with headphones. There are clearer recordings on 'TH-cam' some can be found under the American title: The Lightening Express' There's an Everly Brothers version on YT uploaded under this title, with more verses, so you get to learn the outcome. Any other old songs your mom used to sing? I may have them in my collection, or have some information.

She used to sing Hello, central give me heaven. I also found this I have printed both songs out. I remember begging her to sing them to me and then crying while she did. She would ask if she should stop. I never said yes.

There's at least one good version of this on YT, but being a 2 minute cylinder you only hear one verse. A lot of these 'tearjerjers' had a happpy outcome, but there's no time to get all verses on record. For this reason I often look up the lyrics. I recently uploaded: 'Give Me A Ticket To Heaven' a beatiful ballad of this type.

I have Jack Pleasants on Zonophone singing 'Watching The Trains Come In', which has train sound effects. I think it was a sequel to: 'Watching The Trains Go Out', or it might have been the other way round..

Nice version, without reading the blurb I thought I recognise this, yup it was the Everly Bros 😁

When my grandmother sang this we only got the chorus, but I was lucky to hear the Everley Brothers version in a pub & get the full lyrics. The American version is called: The Lightening Express. There's another even sadder one called: In The Baggage Car Ahead. Its on YT, think there are some C&W versions.

Yes, the piece is American, written by E. P. Moran and J. Fred Helf in 1898.
