Contemporary hanbok design: Cheollik Dress and Shamanism Collection by Tchai Kim | V&A

Young Jin Kim is one of the most well-known designers working with hanbok (traditional Korean dress) operating today. Through her fashion brand Tchai Kim, she produces both custom-made traditional hanbok, including dansokkot (underwear), chima (skirts) and jeogori (jackets), along with modern reinterpretations of traditional hanbok designs in her ready-to-wear collections. Kim has an intuitive and hybrid approach to design mixing global styles with local folk culture.
In this film, Young Jin Kim introduces the Cheollik Dress, one of her signature ready-to-wear items that is based on a traditional horse riding outfit for men, and her wildly extravagant Shamanism Collection from 2020.

I immediately thought of an episode of M*A*S*H, where a Korean shaman arrived to drive the evil spirits out of the camp. The shaman was dressed in the most flamboyantly coloured outfit. Young Jin Kim's explanation of shamans dressing in both male and female garments and being a connection between our world and the spirit world gave such life to the memory of that scene.
