    A couple of things! First, i hope this shows people that although a scuba tank exploding is not common, the results are disastrous! Notice that the door after the test was dislocated. You can go back to the unit before and after the test and see how the explosion dislocated the door. Imagine that tank exploding on the back of a human (that's one negative way to get a "ripped" body ☹)! Second, this device works! It is a safety device meant to stop people from dying or a boat from being destroyed. It does the job! Yay! Be careful people. Dive well!

    Very impressive safety tool. I have witnessed air tank explosions. The metal can rip a man into... bleed out in seconds!

    It is a safety device. ... The fact is no one would be injured or killed using this. That is a good thing. No one complains that the airbag in their car only works once. It only has to work once to be worth it.

    Exploding scuba tanks is an extremely rare event. But catastrophic when it happens when filling with a gas. Testing is done with water if a cilinder fails it just cracks and leaks water. Filling tanks is best done behind a concrete wall. A small water bath doesn’t do much about the explosion but helps to cool the tanks while filling.

    The experiment is not meticulously presented: cylinder mayerial, cylinder rating, temperature. A video camera inside would have been great. I think it was a steel tank for firefighters with a normat pressure of 300 psi tested at 800.

  • @OPBjorn

    Firstly and foremost. What was the tank rated to? And what was the actual reading of the pressure measurement? For all who may be interested, the "rated pressure of the tank" indicates at what pressure the air receiver tank can safely handle to operate efficiently without putting itself or anyone’s safety in danger. And then, and after all - yes!!! WOW! And KaBooM! And once again, WOW!

    I was down in Cozumel and of course I was using their tanks they were pre filled before our dive and it made me a little nervous when I hooked up to my tank it was filled to 3600 pounds I've never seen a SCUBA tank that overfilled and it was a typical aluminum 80

    • @davidaktun
      @davidaktun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe a SPG error?

    • @adamadkins9527
      @adamadkins9527 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      that isn't actually an uncommon practice, especially in the cave diving world people want that little bit of extra air and will fill to 3600 on AL80''s and sometimes to 4000 on catalina's, but if you think about it, an AL80 is rated for 3000psi but every 5 years you should have it hydro'd where they'll fill it to 3/5 the working pressure, so 3000 becomes 5000. they don't burst hardly ever on those so 3600 every now and then isn't bad, also a tank generates heat when filled, so if they didn't have it submerged in water that 3600 will cool down to 3300 or even 3000 once it's given time to set out.

      The pressure test for an tank is conducted by filling the tank with water, and pumping more water into it. since water is incompressible, the pressure rises very quickly for not much difference in the volume of water: So if the tank fails, it just cracks. Pressure test it with compressed air or a gas and you are creating a giant grenade.

      It's a fire extinguisher, a regular CO2 extinguisher operates at about 55 bar, this was filled _way_ beyond its normal operating pressure, so I'd say that it's actually _quite_ safe, for a fire extinguisher.
