The strategic choice of an orange cap to balance out those pecs is very smart. Equal distractions on the top and bottom of the frame = focus averages out to the face.
Brooooooo i've watched a few of Ermin's sim racing videos on youtube before and i was like "wait a sec... i know that guy" you're telling me the guy who made me crack up at his BeamNG videos is the same guy who mastered some of the best sounding metal records out there? And now he's doing a video with Kohle? Dude, my worlds are colliding and it's cool as hell!
Great course, Ermin is fast but fits everything in 2.5hrs, grab the course or better still join the audio kult and get a bunch more great courses! Worth the time and money!
Thanks! That's exactly how I try to do EVERYTHING inside Kohle Audio Kult. All the courses elsewhere take soooooo long. A waste of time. I try to get all the information packed as tight as possible! And yeah, Ermin is great for exactly that!
I've been using flatline for a while now, I usually like to use at least two limiters, flatlinee has been on my master chain for a couple of months! Really awesome plugin!
In regards to relying too much on meters... That is a great point. It becomes a ridiculous rabbit hole when you start watching lufs, dbr, rms, and true peak and trying to juggle them all at the same time while trying to keep the audio impactful. At some point, it just seems like something individuals push in order to overcomplicate things so many will just give up and hire them instead. Just look at all of this information in older recordings you love. If you were mixing and mastering it, with the usual approach of watching meters, would it had come out the same? The answer is likely no. And he says it best.... "The listener doesn't care." That's important. Some metal genres, and their mixes included, seem to be music made for engineers or "virtuoso's." Making music for the tiny minority of people will keep your reach very small. Simple is better. No one was sitting there in the old days saying, "Man, I like this song but this song needed more scale runs. That little clip has ruined it completely for me. I'm getting a refund on this." Death Magnetic, an example of what was wrong with the loudness wars, was mostly only criticized by people that know production. The listener didn't give a damn. So anything under that crazy bar, if the music is good, will be fine. The quest for perfection takes you in circles.
What a great video! I especially like the part about monitoring speakers - I also never understood what help it should be to listen to so many different sources. I lsiten in a small, but heavily treated room (non environment room concept) with a system linear down to 20Hz. While the room itself doesn't sound any natural (and I understand if someone don't want to work in such an environment the whole day) - the mixes and masters translate very well, the best listening situation I ever had.
Ermin's approach to Mastering is in line with what is a modern concept of utilizing plugins (in the box). Of course, communication is always the key that fails most. However, that also means there is an immature interpretation from wannabes that have not mastered the concept literally. So from my perspective, Ermin opens the eye to the future of what Mastering will be like.
My room sucks, I mix on speakers, headphones and check it in the car and on my phone and laptop. It turns out okay. I am also not a professional, I am doing the best I can with what I have.
I still need to figure out how to mix my music properly first. However I will definitely grab this course cause i really enjoy how those bands he has worked with sound and its the direction I want to head my own music to sound so this was a great find for me. Do you got any DAW specific courses on mixing for metal as well? I am currently learning how to use Studio One version 6 professional with stock plugins.
Good course but was really disappointed that the audio tracks did not contain Sylosis song. Was really looking forward to get to master it but... no... 😒
The point of using different references is to go somewhere and see if there is some specific thing you're missing ... like if you have way too much low end you might hear that in your car if your room isnt perfect.
If it's just about the low end cars do actually work, but you could also just use a good pair of headphones. The point is: The less you need to walk around between different systems the better! Most of the time this is rather confusing than helpful. Better invest in making your main monitoring system as good as possible.
Just wanted to let you know you need to update your video description/ channel info. You still have Eskimo Callboy in there instead of Electric Callboy
The true peak advice seems weird to me, I understand that Ermin doesn't shove out masters at 3db over 0dbfs but it sounds like he wouldn't notice if he did. It's pretty easy just to set most limiters to -1dbfs true peak in a few seconds these days, not sure I understand how that takes away my energy. I understand the concept of not wasting time on getting perfect lufs and using meters but clipping due to codecs pushing above zero is definitely a thing you hear it all over soundcloud mixes and EDM where they limited to 0. The rest of the advice is awesome!
Ive recently got (what I think) is my best mixes yet (dropping in a week) on Slate VSX headphones. Lovin’ ‘em tho I still have to get a final take of the lows on my monitors/sub…gotta feel it. Stream “We Suck As Humans.”
@@KohleAudioKult he says this is aimed towards the day to day job kind of guy but I think allot of us are in bands trying to mix our own music and master it but don’t trust sending it out because there’s more bad engineers than good especially in very small city’s in uk that have like no metal scene
Finally, somebody had the guts to say this! "Standards that ultimately don't mean anything" - Ermin, Some really great insights here! I do POST-mastering with a series of tools that (unless you stole them off my primary server) -you don't have. And do you know what my AI "thinks" about "industry protocol"? It doesn't care. So, is AI-centric post mastering going to make a difference (other than buzz-word value)? Let your own ears decide: th-cam.com/video/kWsQJ5UZhfs/w-d-xo.html
Absolute pleasure, Kristian. Thank you for hosting me on your awesome channel🤘
You're welcome anytime! Awesome to have you!

Dude. ERM. I remember buying your mixing booklet like 12 years ago. It was so rad dude. You rule buddy.
Mastering go VROOOOM
"It's never about the amount of low end, it's about the quality of the low end"
Definitely the stand out quote from the whole video for me

Kinda mind blowing, right? Haha!
This course is mind blowing as well. so much information packed into 3h.
Same! I thought I was losing my mind for a minute. I went down that sim racing rabbit hole and knew I'd seen Ermin somewhere
Took Ermin’s course the other day at Kohle Audio Kult! Really wonderful and very well explained course. Learnt so much from Ermin!
Great to hear that!
Mastering your own productions, a practice also known as master-bation.
Limp Bizkit has a song named so.
Ermin -- wow,...what a true professional, gentlemen and so passionate. Love it -- thanks Kristian.

His mastering course in the Kult is worth the price of admission alone. He is a fantastic educator.
Absolutely! We all hope he’s gonna do more for the Kult!
Another man of culture - Black Gives Way to Blue is one of my all time favourite sounding albums ever!
Some very well thought of tips in this video 👌🏼 Ermz knows what’s up
Appreciate the Danny Ric cap!

Great interview very enlightening to the mastering process -

Yes. I have always regarded a good mastering to be 50% mix consultation and good communication.

I'm not sure he's saying limit to zero? It's just much more important for film and TV etc
Nice shirt bro!!!! Igorrr for life!

Geil Mann! 🤟❤

Nice t-shirt ^^
great video. thank you
Can anyone by any chance tell me how to get the ivory m2 eq? I don’t want any of the later revisions.
I'm struggling with something like that right now, a rev. from 2015 🤣🤣😂😂👌👌

so..........90 percent of the processing is in the mix?
In a perfect world 100%
Is my man wearing a Danny Ric cap??
a Master piece
Yo what is the band/song he's working on in that clip?
That’s a song / band from an academy member
It's sick, right
I need that CLIPPER! Please..
Join the Kult and there's your chance!
you true!
Fair to say that mixing is 90% art: 10% science and mastering is 10%art: 90% science???
Both worlds are actually much closer to each other. But yeah, there’s a certain tendency
Igorrr!
Fantastic! I'm working on getting him into the Kult!

Meet genre expectations? Not if you're Metallica. Then you find a producer to make your music suck so that you get radio play.
Master ... Master ... Master ...
I don't even know what the word "master" really means or implies.
It's things you're doing to the entire mix.
The whole f@€&ing Internet is about the loudness... So point is we wasted money I guess...
For Streaming loudness isn’t really an issue anymore. 99% of people have the loudness correction on anyway

His inhales are damn near the same level as his voice. Back off the compression my man!
This is metal, never! Lol
What do you mean?
I believe he’s talking about the mastering engineers voice.
Star Wars🤣🤣🤣🤣
