5:47 "If you need to explain the gear you're using you may be impressing other photographers but that's not gonna affect your bottom line" is a wonderful, crystal clear way to put it, great point.

When I first started shooting professionally, I only carried one camera. That worked for me until I was given a newspaper assignment to shoot the maiden voyage of a new passenger plane the local university had purchased. It was then that I realized that if my camera broke while I was in the air, I would not be able to restage the event. Thank goodness, in addition to my SLR, I also carried a spare TLR that I borrowed from a studio where I also worked. The TLR was what I used to complete the assignment after my SLR broke immediately after takeoff.

This is a great video how how to get started. I think a lot of people get caught up in the GAS of it all and lose sight of the forest. Two bodies, two lenses, 4 batteries, two speed lights that can be triggered off camera, two 13+ foot light stands and two umbrellas cost shockingly little and cover most things you might want to shoot. A tripod is certainly useful, but not necessarily needed depending on what the niche is.

great content. I love how you relate real instances to what equipment is useful. Most new photographers overlook that.

this one general lens approach really gets me thinking since i m building my mirrorless setup atm. i used to shoot 95% prime lenses in dslr era. however modern camera tech is SO good, that image quality isnt really a factor, lowlight performance is also not a factor really because modern camera bodies are so INSANE in iso performance, you can just push it up to like iso 51000 or something if you need more light and run AI denoise afterwards. and for the most stuff i think i rarely shoot wide open and most people dont. usually something at f4 is like a perfect sweetspot where a lens starts to get nicely sharp but you still have enough bokeh left.
so in reality, besides the enjoyment factor, prime lenses make very little sense nowadays really. now i am in a debate with myself over that. i enjoy prime lenses more BUT more often than not, you end up being really unflexible, either not getting a shot you might wanted or you lost the perfect moment because you re changing lenses all the time. why bother with 2-3 prime lenses if a 24-70 will do everything i shoot. and its not even more expensive. when you take canon or nikon as an example with their f-z ef-rf adapter, you can get an ef 24-70 2.8 or the nikon equiv. used for like 300$ or less and just call it a day.

shhh, don't spill the camera manufacturer's secrets.

@@sergiopstudio honestly i think i just found my perfect middle ground for a setup, where i can just have the best of both worlds really. for getting stuff done and flexibility: a modern generalist zoom lens. and for compactness and enjoyment and creativity: 2-3 vintage prime lenses. they are tiny, super duper cheap, really fun and add tons of character. modern primes however seem pointless at this point

For the first point I feel like a great hybrid might be better than buy 2 cameras like if we forget your point on overheating which is indeed a good point, a Sony a7 IV allow you to switch from photo to video in a click sooooo

And what happens if the camera breaks down? There's the point

@@nikostsaknakhs6548 True yeah tho I feel a new camera wouldn't fail in the first years so why not just wait a few years with a great hybrid one and then buy a second great one too instead of buying 2 good ones that you might replace after few years

so well done reminders. thanks for that. only question: Do you think an APSC Fuji is "professional" enough instead of a full frame system? I shoot mostly portrait and people (but not weddings :)

So so true! Other than the Sony + lens that I bought in my early days as new, all the rest was bought used. Rather unhealthy obsession with Kijiji and FB marketplace :(
My main gear is 8-10 years old, so I'm not impressing anybody. But I also find it very freeing from constantly obsessing about this or that feature.
Networking ... my Achilles heal. Don't even know where to start.
