Observers from other countries may not know that, in some states, it is possible to register in either party's political primary. Some people do this to try to influence the selection of their political opponents.

You don't register for a party in America. You register to vote.

It varies by state but in mist states you must choose your party when voting in the primary ( the election that decides who will be the nominee for that party) but you don’t in any state for the general election.
