Both of your recipes look very good. I was amazed at how you stretched the one chicken breast to enough soup for 4-6 people!!😱. But my biggest takeaway is learning how to make the “cream of..” soup!👏👏 I try to use gluten free products and the gluten free cream of soups around here cost a whopping $3.29, which is highway robbery! Now I can make my own with gluten free flour and not be a slave to that overpriced nonsense! Thank you, Emmy!

    • @simplyfromscratchrecipes
      @simplyfromscratchrecipes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

My daughter cannot eat gluten and I thicken all of our soups, sauces, her Mac and cheese with cornstarch, works great and you don't have to worry about the gf flour taste that can be there with some gf flours. Just add the cornstarch to the milk before adding to the melted butter, you will create that cream of soup base. 😀

I make my own Cream of Something, too, using the recipe in the More-with-Less cookbook. The author wonders if an entire generation will live and die unable to make a white sauce, dependent on cans of Cream of Something soup 😊 I will saute a little veg in it sometimes. When I have lots of chives that is a very nice addition.

Your smile & friendliness is a breath of fresh air in these times we are living in ! I love how you stretched the chicken breast ! Adding noodles & veggies and the homemade cream soup is just an amazing idea to stretch dollars !! I’ve never been sure of when to add the veggies or pasta in the crockpot with the meat . You answered so many questions for me ! Also …. I was just thinking of how expensive cream soups are & now I know how to make my own ! God bless you and Paul !!! For more protein and no overcooking of the pasta in the ziti, look for Barilla Protein Plus pasta (in the yellow box). You can cook Barilla till the cows come home, and it will not overcook.

Funny you should ask for our “go to” crockpot recipe! Mine is currently in the crockpot for dinner. Refried beans! It’s super inexpensive to make and no fat!
    Mix together in the crockpot:
3 cups rinsed dry pinto beans
    2 T. onion flakes
1 seeded and chopped jalapeño (I keep the garden harvest in the freezer so I always have some on hand)
    2-3 cloves minsed garlic
    1 t. salt
    1/2 t. pepper
    1/2-1 t. cumin
    8 cups water
Cook on high for 8 hours. Drain excess liquid (save it) and mash. I usually use my hand blender. Add back drained liquid a little at a time to get to the consistency you like.
We use the beans for burritos, tostados, side dish, etc. Hope you enjoy!

      @DCupcake58 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh, what a can of worms you opened, Emmy! My favorite crock pot meal is "refrigerator stew." We all have this in our repertoire. At the end of the month, or the day before pay-day, open the fridge and get out every left-overs container. The whole point of refrigerator stew is to clean out the refrigerator. I take everything that isn't moldy or disgusting, put it in the crock pot, but I stay away from overwhelming flavors like a chili or barbecue, but they go on the side. I throw in all the tired looking veggies and add a stock, season to taste and add rice, pasta or dumplings. Never the same twice, but never any complaints either.
We do a whole lot of stuff in the crock pot. It's my second favorite tool in the kitchen after the coffee pot.

A go to meal for the crock pot is potato soup. Don't know exact measurements but you cook frozen hashbrowns and onions in broth, add cream cheese, stir and serve with bacon, sour cream, cheese and green onions if desired. Also, something called crack chicken. It's a few chicken breasts, a bit of broth to keep ot from drying out, and then after you shred it, and drain off the broth (but reserve it), add a packet of ranch dressing mix and a block of cream cheese. Often I do variations and don't do the ranch and do pesto or salsa instead. If the chicken is too thick, then you add broth back.

My crock pot tip isn't really a recipe but helps me so much! I stew my chicken in the crockpot then freeze the shredded chicken in one cup baggies! When I'm ready to make a meal I pull out the cooked chicken and defrost in the refrigerator or microwave and my meal is almost ready. I purchase the chicken on sale and cook right away in the crockpot to save room in my freezer and it's a tremendous help to get dinner on the table in no time.

I’ve been making this since the early ‘80s. A friend from Hawaii shared it.
    “12345 Ribs”
    Ingredients:
1.5lbs boneless country style pork ribs (currently $3.69/lb at Hannaford)
    1Tbs dry sherry
2Tbs soy sauce (or coconut aminos)
3Tbs white vinegar (or rice or apple or whatever you have)
4Tbs sugar (or 6 pkts Sweet n Lo)
    5Tbs water.
(I always double the sauce because it’s so good!)
    Direction:
    Put ribs in crockpot.
Combine all ingredients except pork ribs in bowl for sauce.
    Pour sauce over ribs.
Either cook on low about 6-8 hrs, high about 3-4 hrs, or in Dutch oven, covered, in 350 degree oven for 1.5-2hrs. For thicker sauce, if desired, make cornstarch/water slurry and add at last minute.
Serve over rice, with (frozen) Asian style veggies.

I make chicken and noodles in the crockpot at least every other week. I saw the comment from the diabetic. You can make both recipes diabetic friendly by using whole wheat noodles instead of regular noodles, you just need to adjust the cooking time to cook a bit longer as the more fiber in the noodles makes them thicker. That works as long as you aren't gluten free. Otherwise substitute with some chickpea or spinach pasta.
By the way Emmy, I took your advice about shopping all the pretty flowered tops at thrift stores and have found two very nice ones in two weeks and only paid $4 total. I've challenged myself to five no spend days a week and so far have managed to hit that four weeks in a row now. I'm learning so much from your channel, keep up the great work!

Although the mixed vegetables looked good, I think I would have added just some frozen peas and mushrooms. Also, I think I would have used a little poultry seasoning on the chicken breast.

I love your recipes, Emmy, and I can't wait to try your recipe for Cream Soup. Even the off brands of Cream soups are getting more expensive, so making my own should be a great way to save money. I have to admit, it's hard watching your cooking episodes late at night when I am almost ready for bed- I get so hungry watching you make your recipes that I want to go into the kitchen and plunder the fridge. You're wearing my will power down!
My easiest, yet yummy go to Crockpot recipe is Italian Chicken. I lightly brown a few boneless, skinless chicken breasts and throw them into the Crockpot with about a third of a bottle of low fat Italian dressing, (purchased cheap at Aldi's or the Dollar Store) and some black pepper. I set the Crockpot to cook five to six hours on the low setting, and the chicken breasts come out wonderfully flavorful and tender. It's smells terrific when cooking as well. I serve with green beans and garlic bread. This recipe is a family favorite and a great time saver on busy days.

Hi Emmy and Paul. Hope you both have a great vacation with your son. Good times! Will be making that chicken and noodle dish soon. That looks so good. Thanks for showing us how to make a cream soup ... that is a big money saver. I actually make many meals in the crockpot. Either some chicken or turkey ham steak with lots of potatoes, carrots, celery, seasonings and water or broth. Just simple meals ... light on meat with many, many veggies. Enjoy your vacation.

Your meals looked great!! I make one potmeals of filling lentil or white bean soup with dried herbs ( rosemary, thym, sage parsley) Could ad🥫 a can of tomatoes a carrot 🥕or pepper🫑onions 🧅zucchini🍆broccoli🥦.leeks work fine too! Sometimes I ad a couple bacon rasher cut up in thin slices for a deep smoky taste.

The simplest crockpot recipe I've ever come across is to add chicken breast and a jar of salsa. Seriously, I had to try it because it was so easy. I couldn't believe anything that simple would taste so good. I cook it in the crock pot on low for 8 hours it high for 3-4 hours. We put it over cooked rice but it would go well over noodles or even in tacos if you thicken the sauce with a corn starch slurry.
Love your recipes in this video. Yum!

Wow, they both look delicious. Definitely a keeper. Macaroni and cheese in the crackpot is probably my go to recipe. Chili is also an easy recipe to make in the Fall months. I did make rice pudding a few times and it was a big hit. I hope you are enjoying your time in NC. Perfect time to be at the beach.

Hi Emmy and Paul great video! Learnt wonderful punctual tasty crockpot dishes but there is a suggestion I would like to give that is to make white sauce I don't make it in butter instead when I boil pasta it loses its starch and we can add milk powder in it the right now so it gives that white sauce consistency and the taste to it that does the job later cheese can be added so no need to add those extra calories of butter. If this can help.
