I can agree that IM is the poster child of the genre but they are actually more like industrial/classical Goa Trance, this is the key to their wide appeal, their music is artfully composed, structured, uses many effects, has vocals, and everything that is required for anything that can become popular. There is plenty of other great stuff in the genre, which exploded into a million variants at the time they showed up, I recall at the time hanging out with a dj who had a very broad collection, and as he went through each one he talked about where they came from, some was german, some was indian, some was french, some was this some was that... the droney, atonal 'psytrance' appeared, differentiating from the 'goa trance' with its 'waves', there was a hiphop-oriented style coming out of Sydney through the group Vibe Tribe and basically, IM cherrypicks all of the good things and rearranges them in a way that is perfectly distinctive. The best thing about IM is they brought the style of music to the masses.
