  • USWNT icon Abby Wambach sits down with Kelley O’Hara to discuss her two Olympic gold medals, World Cup Championship, and how she’s still showing up as a leader in her role as NWSL owner.
Abby talks with Kelley about her transition from captain on the field to leading her former teammates off the field and how she’s still fighting for pay equality, even in retirement. As an owner of the new Angel City FC, Abby may be done playing, but her impact on the NWSL is far from over.

I'm very impressed by how incredibly objective, self aware, and profound her reflections are here. I didn't watch much of the USWNT during her era, but I'm inspired to go back and watch.

At the comments saying "the uswnt only won bronze at the olympics now blah blah" completely missed the point of this episode. If anything, Abby stressed the importance of failure in moments of your life as the recipe for greater things in the future. Tokyo wasn't the medal that the USWNT wanted but it'll definitely fuel the hunger for World Cup 2023 even more. Great episode by Kelly and such profound insights from Abby. A true leader for these players and the sport.

Agreed! It’s also important to have perspective. How many countries actually win a medal? They didn’t get what they wanted, but they still did good. The US will bounce back faster, harder and stronger!

This is one of the finest interviews I've ever watched or heard, like in the same category as Bob Costas and Mickey Mantle. Kelley is phenomenal as a host. And they know each other at such an integral level and handled potential train wrecks of personal moments so well that we got to see into them but not in a patronizing or discomforting way. I've watched the Sam Mewis episode and that was equally well done by Kelley. She is a major talent in the interviewing world. Those two were comfortable with her. Thank you Kelley. Thank you Abby. The lessons in that interview are amazing. They glanced over the change from a male dominated culture to a woman's culture. But it's there. And now Abby is part owner with Mia Hamm of a soccer team. Wow !!!

What an episode this is. What a conversation! I mean Abby LOVES to talk and thank God she does because I love to listen to her!!
The story about the benching and the World Cup is truly one of the greatest stories in the history of sports. There’s no way in hell that story shouldn’t be as popular as the Miracle on Ice or some other stories. It’s absolutely incredible how that played out, what Abby took from that, how it has affected her life after soccer, and how it affected that team to win the World Cup. AND the fact that it was Abby’s first and only WC win. Like, what?? There’s just no way that shouldn’t be a top sports story of all time. It’s absolutely incredible and everyone needs to hear that story!!

loved this episode! abby has some great lessons about leadership and humility. and so cool to get an inside look at the mentality of pro athletes.
"i hope you find someone like that when you retire" - Abby talking about her wife
Kelley's "i think i have" response after, all smiles, is so sweet!

Hmmmm... the statement about the bronze medal placements is so cringe now.. considering the national team took bronze at Tokyo Olympics.... eeee--- :S Especially having watched all the media interviews right after that win! Yikes! Despite that though.. the rest of the interview was so good. I am so glad to hear Abby talk about her working on herself. There were so many great take-aways from this ... but I mostly loved all the personal journey moments that Abby took us on. It made her so much more human to me.. and not just this ridiculously talented soccer star. Well done ladies! Kelley I loved how you gave us the history 101 of Abby from beginning to now! :)

    This was amazing.
Softball is my sport, always has been and always will be. I recently broke my thumb and for the first time since I started playing when I was a toddler I won’t be playing for awhile, I’m 25 playing on a Co-Ed league now but it’s truly humbled me. I’ve had to teach myself to slow down and let myself heal but also push myself to heal like never before. It’s crazy. So many thoughts go through your head during an injury

Before , I admire Abby as a soccer player, but after this excellent interview, I love and admire her as a person. God bless her. I wish more Abbys join the USAWNT. I wish all kinds of success for Abby in her professional and personal life.
Kelly, thank you for this video, you are an excellent player and a very good interviewer ,who know how to listen to your guests without interruption.
Sorry for the results of the world cup 2023. Hopefully the team stay out of politics.

What a great podcast. What awesome insight and perspective Abby shares. After watching this I have a whole new respect for her on top of the massive respect I already had. So many young athletes and really anyone in general could listen to this and learn so much to apply to their own lives and whatever journey their life takes them on. I believe her life has more big things in it because she is not afraid to fail. Wish her all the best .

Great interview/conversation. Kelley you need to sort out sound levels, your volume was so low you sounded like you were at the back of the room. I hope you can interview people from other sports eventually but also other soccer players not USA, such as Sam Kerr or Marta.

My wife and kids a sociopath board game cheaters. They make up rules, they can re-roll the dice if they don’t like the original outcome, and on and on. For me this is just complete bananas and madness b/c I’m the one with all the official pieces in ziplock bags & a laminated copy of the official rule book. I feel anxiety just thinking about it.
