Right there with you. I also love my Les Paul custom R8, but man I also love my PRS core McCarty 594. I would bring my Les Paul as a backup and play prs live. Probably use both in the studio.
Hello Johnathan, you had great lessons while in Covid times, really enjoyed and still reference them. I have been interested in the 594 SE version that came out. I hope to visit the store when I come for a visit
All very good points and I think I agree with most of what you said. There is something about the tones you get out of a good Les Paul and you can find ones now that are lighter in weight. PRS is really dialing it in with the pickups they are making now and the necks on their Singlecuts are near perfect. Intonation is great as well. The setup right out of the box is phenomenal. No one does that as well as PRS. All in all for my money PRS is it for live gigs. Paul and his crew are making great instruments for working musicians.
I bought the 594 that he’s using in this video. I love it. It’s fantastic. Due to my incurable desire to collect guitars however, I still want a Les Paul Custom. There is a certain growl that only a Les Paul has, and it’s still a bucket list guitar for me.
I really should give PRS another chance. I just couldn't "connect" with them when I tried a few 25 or 30 years ago. The moans about Les Paul tuning stability have always interested me, because I've owned a 1979 "The Paul" since new and it's always been rock solid for tuning. Part of the reason I bought it was that it was a lot lighter than a Les Paul, so it's been a great guitar for gigs on both counts.
All right, Johnathon, I still gave you a like and a share, so please hear me out. I've played both the PRS Singlecut (mine is an '01) and a myriad of Les Paul Standard, Studio, and Custom (my current #1 is a LP Standard), and I'll say these things: (1) I don't go out of tune. I keep my nut cut properly and use BB Nut Sauce and I've not had the tuning issue since my Swampash Studio (yeah, they did a run of those) back in the mid 2000's. (2) My guitars of choice for the night are my Ultra Strat and my Les Paul Standard (pic in my icon), and I want that tonal variety between them, so I know which one I'll play during what song and why. (3) I've played plenty of Strats, Teles, and PRS's (see my moniker) that way the same as and more than my 2019 50's Les Paul Standard (non-weight relieved) that clocks in just over 9 lbs. My '01 PRS SC weighs in just over 10 lbs! In short, you didn't need to go through that to convince your wife you needed a Single Cut. I will also say that as many PRS SC's I've played, none of them had that Gibson growl and bite. I love them, and I'm looking at a 594, but it's not because I want it to replace my LP, I want it to enhance the collection of tones and looks I already have!
I own both brands, though I've owned more Gibsons than PRS. Always wanted an SG 61 reissue. However Ive been checking out the PRS S2 McCarty thinline, and the more I think about it, the more the S2 seems like a better choice for the money.
Totally agree... so sick of my Gibson going out of tune... especially when going from lead to rythym. My prs ce 24 and core 24 rarely ever go out of tune and have better intonation. I love the classic Gibson too... but I don't trust them live... hate having to tube halfway through songs. PRS has own voice and sounds epic too. You get extremely close to both Gibson and strat sounds....
Good reasons to bring both if you have the option. I don't know much about PRS but I'm guessing the necks aren't as prone to break :*: If only they could make one guitar that does it all and is called Gibson Les Paul standard🤓☻🤠🚥🚦
The first good guitar I played on was my sisters les Paul and it gets a lot of attention, it’s better for more 70s and 80s classic rock sense most guitarists used it, but I just got a prs and love the feel and sound of it, I don’t even have the super expensive made in America one neither, just the 700 dollar Indonesia one. My sister who has Gibson les Paul and Leo fenders G&l strat absolutely loves the sound look and feel of it. I wouldn’t be one of those guys that own 7 or 8 of them, but definitely wouldn’t mind 2 more, one hollow body, one acoustic, then a nice Gibson sg and an American made vintage Jackson then my life will be complete 😎
I’ve got an S2 which I love. Fenders too. But my Gibsons don’t go out of tune either. Maybe cause I play 9s and have a light touch? If I let them sit a few days, they all go out with time and temps.
I agree with you! I just purchased my third PRS (2 single cut and one 24 fret double-cutaway). I do own a Goldtop LP. It has the Tronical turners on it however! The quality of my Korean PRS's is simply unmatched by Gibson!
I used to be sponsored by Gibson, and they caught me playing a strat at a club one night, they actually sent a rep to my gig 😂 after the show they came up to me and asked what the problem was, i was like yall don't make strats is the problem 😂
I agree with 99 percent of what you said. Gibson guitars are wonderful but are a bit more “arts and crafts” in my opinion. I have always gone out of tune with Les Pauls on the G, B, and high E with all of my 1-2.5 step bends. After half of a song, tuning is a must. With a PRS, I can go a set with only having to slightly tweak the high E. They are more solid and feel much more technically advanced.
If I had to purchase one guitar, I would go for the PRS. Why? Simply because PRS consistency is off the chart, you know you will always get a good guitar, no lemon, and it will stay in tune, will play nice. With Gibson, you can find such great guitar, but you have to find it, and you might need to try 20 or 30 Gibsons before to find THE one that will fit for you... and yet, you’re not guaranteed it will stay in tune. And yet, the PRS will get you 99.99% of the tone close to a real Gibson, so I’m fine with this numbers and consistency.
Weird...my 2001 Gibson Les Paul Standard has been played hard over its 20 years (its previous owner is an underground legend who played it all over the world) and it has never given me issues...I've played it hard myself.
I've only had a se 22 I didn't like it though it performed well. Im looking at maybe a cheeper les paul or a LP special or something from pros s2 range. It may seem dumb but a real hang up is that I have a extra les paul case
A Rule of Thumb for the Road was if You broke, Lost or had Stolen you Instrument and had a hour to find one to play professionally that Evening, A PRS will usually always be in tune and able to carry a full set equally, Love a Gibson but unless had time to search for that Perfect Les Paul in emergency have to Go PRS
The two manufacturers have a different take on a double humbucker guitar. There are a ton of differences but that is the fundamental similarity. Everyone has an opinion, I like the PRS's because they are such a solid platform and ridiculously consistent, and I think tone is in the hands more than the gear. But that's me. Steer away from the haters and stick with the few informed commenters and that's a start. But go to a store and find a similar Les Paul and PRS in the same price range and try them out for yourself. PRSs are usually more expensive at the low end than Epiphone, but at that end they're a much better guitar. If you buy on-line Do Not buy a Gibson or Epiphone that way. PRS, all day long.
I can't believe you're even making that comparison. I have 3 PRS guitars. One is a McCarty 594 SC, there is no way you can compare a Les Paul to a McCarty 594 SC. I call my 594 "The Les Paul killer" My Les Paul has Burstbuckers 2 and 3 and the 58's on my 594 sound way way better. PRS is really the only brand where you can say you get more than what you pay for, Gibson you get much less than what you pay for, shit even Epiphone now (2021) has better Les Pauls than Gibson.
Jesus. Why don’t you guys just change the channel name to Gibsons Are Pure Sh*t? Seems like every time I see one of your vids, you’re throwing shade at Gibson. I get it. Good enough for clickbait, but not good enough to play. What a joke. 1. If you can’t keep a Gibson in tune, then your setup is sh*t. 2. Gibson offers coil splits and pickups that don’t sound sterile. 3. Gibson makes light Les Pauls. Especially if you have PRS money to spend.
Because the Gibson Les Paul is for professionals only. It's much too complex for an amateur to handle in a gig situation. You should probably stay with the PRS.
Right there with you. I also love my Les Paul custom R8, but man I also love my PRS core McCarty 594. I would bring my Les Paul as a backup and play prs live. Probably use both in the studio.

More reliable, more stable and your Guitar Tech will love you if you buy a PRS...
That's for sure! Unless you pay him per guitar!!
Thats why live i play a gibson explorer live . Gibson tone with six in line tuners. Ive literally played for 2 hrs+ wothout touching a peg
Totally true, that’s why I prefer my Strat 😄

100% Spot on! I own a 1968 LP Custom, I love it, but would I want to gig with it?

Jonathan throwing shade at Gibson. 😮
Agree on all points 100%
I've got both and I prefer my PRS any day, but just can't seem to part ways with my LP's....lol
Were in the same boat...darn if those LP's aren't just so stinking cool!
I have a 2019 60’s Les Paul in Ice Tea. That thing is sweet....but my 2020 PRS is my go-to axe.
I sold my LP standard and picked up a 594 SC core and it was night and day. I just ordered a second one.

Gibson used to make strats but but they sucked. US1 back in the 80s.
Did they end your sponsorship?
@@AviMus82 of course not buying a gibson hat and shirt doesn't mean you have a sponsor deal

I didn’t realize Southern Pines had a guitar shop. 🤙🏼
