      We have a critter room: it houses a parakeet (the last of a group of 7, he 22 years old!!), an african grey, 2 praying mantis, a rabbit and will have 2-3 rats soon in that room. The locked door has screen mesh on the top half so the cats can see in when looking from perched on the nearby desk but not bother the critters.

      My golden retriever used to sit by the rat cage (double level critter nation) and watch them quietly for long periods, she adored them. Our new dog is only 12 lbs and is very gentle with all my small animals, she is afraid of my African grey parrot and steers clear of my 18lb Flemish Giant rabbit Lilly, Emma (the dog) almost got kicked by her once.

      I also have guinea pigs, I’m planning to get a sphynx and i’m just worried because the cats liter box and bowls will need to be in my bedroom. I also have a rabbit in my room and have seen them co-exist together safely.
      I have a cat currently who is now loosing interest in the pigs, also the rabbit absolutely hates when things are near her “territory” so we need to work on that first and rearrange the room.

    I didn't have a lot of problems keeping natural predators and prey together when I was the only one taking care of the animals. The problems always arose when other people needed to help me care for my animals because I was injured or ill. They would leave doors open or forget to close a cage door. I learned the hard way that it is important to have a couple of backup people trained to safely care for your animals in the event you are unable to do it yourself. That will minimize the risk of predators and prey accidentally coming in contact with disastrous results.

    When I had many rats, and many cats, in the same house, the rats were a danger to the cats, not the other way around. The cats did not care about the rats, but the rats wanted to kill the cats. If they walked by the cage and the tail went in or around the cage, rats would run to the area and bite the tail, if they pawed at the cage, rats would bite the paws. If I attempted any introductions, the rats would immediately bolt towards the cat and viciously attack them and the cat would bolt away across the house. I do live in an apartment but had separate areas that were watched with introductions. But again, in my own specific personal experience, lifelong indoor, spayed/neutered cats are more in danger FROM the rats than the other way around. You will even see videos of this with outdoor rats and indoor/outdoor cats as well, rats chasing cats to attack them, with the cats running away.

    • @rdizzy1
      @rdizzy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @•{Waveverse Zodiacs}• Yeah, I believe it, all cats are not the same. But rats are more aggressive or at least can be more aggressive than rabbits or birds or what not. You can see videos on youtube of wild rats literally chasing down cats attempting to bite them.

    My mom actually had two cats since they were kittens, back in the day and somehow she taught all of them to not attack the small animals! A few of our hamsters got out a couple times in my childhood, the cat would literally follow the hamster and lead them back to us!! It was the sweetest thing 🥺
    Also we went on an emergency trip in 2009 cause my grandma died and we had left and paid someone to house sit my dog, me and my brothers cats and my gerbil, apparently my cat or my brothers cat knocked the gerbil cage down, and he got out, go figure, the house sitter informed us and kept looking for the gerbil but they didn’t want go in any of our rooms, we assumed the worst for my gerbil as he wasnt seen in 6 of the 7 days we were gone, my moms one remaining cat was with us for comforting her on the trip and she was still working on training the other 2 to be gentle with our small critters, when we got back my gerbil had somehow made his way into my room and just was chilling in there away from the other cats 😂🤦‍♂️ My cat who had been by my side happy to see me, heard the gerbil as I did and she tried to get the gerbil in front of me but the gerbil squeaked and my cat freaking ran, i picked him up and put him in his little travel cage i put him in while cleaning his regular cage, 😂 small animals can be smart and cats among other animals can be scared over the littlest things! 💜💜 I had that same gerbil for YEARS! from 2009-2015! I rehomed him as i knew he was old and needed proper around the clock care/attention a few years after we moved back to connecticut, i was older and i had moved with my grandma and couldn’t have him at her house - My old gerbil lived on through at least 2017 when i lost contact with my old friend, I never expected an animal with such a short expected lifespan to survive so long - but he did 💜💜 i miss that little guy, though everyone was scared of him because he had red eyes

    I have a Critter Nation and it's actually really hard to open. You have to squeeze both handles with a lot more force than a cat is capable of, and you have to squeeze both at the same time for it to open. Cats don't have the strength or dexterity to accomplish it. I sometimes struggle with it myself when my wrists hurt (I have tendon damage in both wrists and some days they just hurt), so there's no way anything that doesn't have a thumb could open it.

    So when I was younger, we had a guinea pig for about 2 years before we got a 5 month old kitten. I don’t think our cat had ever seen a guinea pig before. So, his enclosure sat closer to the ground, so she would reach a paw in a smack his butt. Well, he got sick of this, so he turned around and nipped at her paw. After that for the most part she would ignore him, but every now and then she would put her paw in, wave it around, and Butterscotch would run around in a circle and come to stand in front of her. When he passed away, she seemed to be sad. She ended up laying down where his enclosure was for most of the day that he died. Our cat passed away almost 2 years ago now, so I like to think they’ve reunited and are waiting for the rest of us

    Two cats and four guinea pigs - the cats were raised with them. Guinea pigs have cage covers though the cats have never jumped into this one. While they have jumped into others I had while I was cleaning, they have never while the pigs were in the cage. They have come up to them during floor time but never did anything but check out the fleece or just watch the piggies run around. They were supervised. The cats are jealous of the fleece the piggies get but otherwise they ignore the pigs unless they are walking by the cage or the floor time playpen, they give them a glance. They preferred the hamster who ran on his wheel. The cats know the piggies are valued and don’t bother them. Whenever the hamster escaped, the cat would show me where they are but never ever touched them. Cats are intelligent. My friend has five cats and four rats. The cats are jealous of the fleece and scared of the rats. Trim their claws and keep the cats inside so they don’t bring in things that can get transferred.

    I have birds and a cat. The birds live in my bedroom and the cat is only allowed in there when I'm in there. The cat sleeps in my room as well but the bird cage is securely covered every night so she couldn't even get a paw near the bars. During the day, when I'm in there with her she mostly plays or sleeps on my bed and totally ignores them. Then she gets let out of the room for the birds' free flying time. She knows she is never allowed through the door unless I carry her in or invite her verbally.
    Also, the desensitization to my birds has resulted in a lack of interest in all birds when we're outside

    Love this video! I have 2 cats and 2 rats. The cage is in our open living / working space, but the apartment is set up in a way that the pets can be separated when we aren’t home, or at night, or when it’s rat free roam time, etc. When they are together the rat cage is ALWAYS closed, and the cats either don’t care or just watch with curiosity from a safe distance. It did take a couple weeks for both parties to adjust but we have a great system going for a long time now. Love having both pets especially since I’m home all the time now too.

    I learned the hard way the importance of a lock or very complicated latch on a cage 😔 my leopard gecko's enclosure has a slide-and-click-into-place lid with a place to add a padlock, and I cannot stress enough to GET A PADLOCK for that kind of lid. It's not just for keeping snakes or other escape artists in, turns out it would have kept the cats out. I no longer have a leopard gecko because of that lack of foresight.

    I’m babysitting a 10week old kitten and I chose to build an extra layer of cage to put over the existing cage. It’s from cheap wire sheets ziptied together and its sitting on top of the cage and there’s an inch wide space from the wire sheet to the cage. No paws or teeth can meet. It’s an ugly solution but I don’t have the option to have the cage in a separate room and it will give me peace of mind for the short stay the kitten is here

They boop his nose when he’s close to the cage and comes up to greet him when he comes by. They’ve been out around him with lots of supervision but he just wants to cuddle them. It’s super sweet. They’re besties ❤
    Edit: to clarify I am always holding them when they are close to the cats. They will sniff each other and the rats will touch the cats noses. But I would never allow them to be on the ground together. But we’ve never had any issues

    My loft doesn't have any doors to separate the different areas (besides the bathroom) and I have a 16 year old cat and two young rats. The rats have a really tall sturdy cage and my cat never pays any attention to them, the most she does is sit and watch them for a second before wandering off again. I think I'm lucky to have an older cat who doesn't care about much. Plus my rats came from a breeder and when they see the cat they don't seem to be affected at all

I made the mistake of letting her look in the cage by putting her feet on it, however she really scared one of them as they were on the bottom at the time. I have now put up a large cardboard box around the bottom, that enables them to not see her and vice versa, but also can easily be moved.

    It may not be a rat, but I thought I'd tell this story from back at college! We had a Reptile room (It was an Animal Care college) with snakes, insects, and of course reptiles and a few fish! The college also had two cats who free-roamed the grounds, since they never caused any issues and were very cuddly with the students. One day, one of our cats came into the Reptile Room when nobody was around and jumped ontop of a Leopard Gecko's cage where she often liked to sleep since it was super warm and high up. We assume that her jump dislodged the top of the cage, since she pretty quickly realized that she could stick her paw in.. She was able to scoop the Leopard Gecko out of the cage! Luckily a student found them at this point and saved the Leopard Gecko, but we have no idea if the cat would have actually killed the Leopard Gecko if she hadn't been stopped and unfortunately this caused the Leopard Gecko to drop her tail in fear.
    Edit: Both the Leopard Gecko and cats were fine after this! Betty (The LG) recovered well and is spoiled rotten by the students now.. She also gained the nickname "Ugly Betty" from the incident, but we love her. The cats were moved to a bigger branch of the college following an outbreak of Leptospirosis that had infected a mouse nest on the grounds, and now have twice the space they did before!

      I’m on about letting a cat been right next to a rodent like shown before. Not been in the same room. You can have them in the same room safely. But having a cat go into the cage or letting them play together then that’s a no . Well for me it is in my opinion.

    • @rdizzy1
      @rdizzy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tiffanykey4589 Highly depends on the cat and the rat as well, a highly socialized, indoor only, neutered cat is totally different than an unsocialized, unfixed barn cat for instance. Same with rodents as well, a socialized, neutered , captive bred rat will act totally different than an unsocialized, unfixed rat. Throw individual personalities into this as well, some cats are lazy and sociable, others are active,unsociable and very prone to stalking/hunting behaviors. Same with rats, most of my rats were super happy, not nervous, social with humans or cats, others were nervous, territorial and aggressive, even to me.

    My cat was very sick when we first adopted him, for the first couple months it was a daily routine of different medications and care. I have one male mouse in a large bin cage we keep on the dresser. My cat seemed like a chill relaxed guy, we were told hes 3 years old and he seemed really sweet. He is still really sweet but when he got healthy he started to be interested in our mouse and even jumped on top of the cage a few times which freaked me out. And one particular time i wasn't paying close enough attention and he pushed the cage off the dresser. It scared me so much but luckily my mouse was unharmed. Now my cat isnt allowed in my bedroom when we aren't fully watching him, he sleeps in the livingroom at night and is locked out of the bedroom when we leave the house. I love my cat and my mouse but i can't have my cat hurting him. And my dogs dont care about the mouse unless in taking his cage down to interact with him but i lock the dogs up for that.

    This is such a useful video thank you! While I don't have a cat I have two dachshunds that will hunt rodents if they have the chance so I have to take my precautions as well. It's much simpler than a cat since they are short little dogs that can't reach the enclosure however I have to be very careful any time I take my hamster out as an escape would result in a loss. And when I brought home my hamster they barked at him for a while which was worrying but now they don't even notice. But this video is so important for cat owners especially :)

    We have cats and ferrets. We put the cats in the bedroom when we let the ferrets out because the ferrets terrorize the cats. Our Gunter will try to drag the cats under furniture. When we had a Great Dane they would chase her for fun and she would get scared so we would just tell her ahead of time that the ferrets were going to be out and she would head for the bedroom.

When it comes to these scenarios just try and make sure the cat doesnt have access to the rooms the cages are in and if thats not possible or if the off chance the cat can get in try to cat proof the cage. This is probably a good topic to touch on!
    Living at home right now due to the pandemic but once I move out I'm planning on only taking my rats with me because I don't think it's good to have too many animals when I'm moving into a pretty small apartment. But my family has other pets.
    The dog and one cat are both terrified of the rats.
    The other cat is very interested in them and likes watching them. But beyond sometimes getting close to sniff doesn't seem like he's going to hurt them so far. I still try to be very careful because I'm worried a stray tail hanging out of the cage could look inviting.
    The weirdest thing is he seems more interested in their fleece and cage then them? Like if I'm cleaning the cage and have the rats in my small travel cage (they hate it but it's hard to clean while they're in the way :( ) and so leave the cage door open he'll get in the cage and hang out on one of the levels with fleece on it and refuses to move? It's so weird.
