Boy do I remember that "Wednesday is Sundae" promotion from Carvel. My grandmother always wanted to go and take advantage of it, but we never, ever remembered to do it.
It's kind of sad that the commercials from 30 years ago had more personality than most of the shows on TV now...

Thanks Tap! Incredible clip -- so many 1970s commercial staples in one clip. Especially dig the disco version of the "We Give You a Choice" theme used for Weekend Playhouse. Would love to hear more of it if it turns up. Interesting to see so many live VOs, too. Ed Ladd's voice catches at the end of the Sports Extra clip. And the refined Peter Lucas is well matched for the "Man and a Woman" promotion.

I was a geeky 12 year old kid living in the South Bronx where abandoned, burnt out shells stood on every other block. My parents put me through catholic school and I was grateful for the education. These video clips take me back when we weren't so engrossed in modern technology alienating ourselves from human contact (or so it seems). Then again, my life (and so has the South Bronx) improved considerably since the 1970s... and I wouldn't change a thing.

I don't know about that - you were zoned out watching these commercials. These TV's were the modern technology of back then.. but we still had more social interaction playing outside with the other kids.

OH-Ho-Ho-Ho-Hoooooooooooooooo RRRRACEWAY PARK!!!!!! Guess that was after this ad's time ;)
I remember the Carvel in Fair Lawn, NJ.... expensive ice cream and it was run by Asians!
The Merv Show was a big deal for WNEW!!!!! Ads everywhere for it!
Notice how Folger's is just called Folgers without the apostrophe now?
Frank Perdue we hardly knew ye!
A BEER ad during a WNEW movie? That's rare!
Somebody else used to have the TAKETHETRAINTOTHEPLANE ad, good to see it again!
    COOL NEWS UPDATE!

If all these ads are from the same "Weekend Playhouse", the date would be either July 7 or July 8 1979, I'm not sure which day "we playhouse'" aired.
Skylab did fall on that Wednesday 7/11/79.

Ah...memories. We moved from NYC to CA in August of '79. I wish I could see the "Disney Summer Hit Parade" commercial on one of these breaks. Do you have that one?

@panedit - Actually, that discofied variant of the "We Give You a Choice" music - and the accompanying movie graphics - were used for all of WNEW's movie showcases of the time, which also included "5 Star Movie," "Metromedia Movie," "Movie Greats," "Hollywood's Finest" and (in its final throes) the "11:30 Movie."

This airdate would have been July 8, 1979 - because "A Man and a Woman" aired on July 12 of that year under the "Summer Film Festival" banner.

So Ed Ladd was the live announcer that Sunday night, except for the promo for "A Man and a Woman" which was voiced by Peter Lucas. And nice to see two ad legends - Frank Perdue and Tom Carvel (the latter, alas, by voice only).
