It started in the late 1800s ,when one influential woman( Eliza Scidmore ) expressed interest in beautifying the area with Japanese cherry blossom trees after a visit to Japan .It took growing diplomatic ties and friendship between the 2 nations to make it happen .In 1912 the mayor of Tokyo presented 3000 trees to the city .
During the Pacific war, you Americans hadn't cut off these cherry blossom trees. Thank you US people. Now we have got true friendship between two nations.
The rows of cherry trees that line the banks of the Potomac River in Washington DC every spring are a symbol of the Japan-U.S. alliance. The cherry trees were a gift from the then mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, in 1912 as a token of friendship between Japan and the United States. Many Japanese people are happy to know that Japanese cherry trees are loved by the American people. Japan stole white cherry trees from Korean Jeju island and they must pay loyalty to Korea. In 1933, the Japanese botanist Gen'ichi Koizumi reported that Yoshino cherry originated on Jeju island, South Korea. Washington DC must change Japanese cherry trees in DC to correct name of Korean cherry trees which was stolen from Jeju island of S Korea.
It's been already confirmed by genetic analysis researchs that Yoshino cherry is a hybrid of Oshima zakura, native to Izu islands, Japan, and Edo higan in early 18 century. And that Yoshino cherry and King cherry, native to Korea and some Koreans claim to be same species as Yoshino, are two distinct species. Now King cherry has been given a new scientific name to distinguish it from Yoshino cherry. So nobody has to pay "loyalty" to your lovely country Korea.
What does the origin of the plant mean? Plants spread just by the birds carrying the seeds. In Japan, there are many poems(waka,tanka) about cherry blossoms over 1000 years ago. Is there such a cherry blossom viewing poem in Korea? Sakura and cherry blossom viewing are Japanese culture.
It`s Korean origin theory. I remember a Korean university professor insisting on the theory that Somei Yoshino originated in Korea. Korea put jealousy and historical anti-Japanese feelings to Japan in academic research. It is the same in archaeology. It is not only the origin of Somei Yoshino that Korea steals. Korea steals and imitates agricultural products with seedling rights, science and technology, religious cultural assets, sweets, and intellectual property. And Koreans are speaking badly of Japan all over the world.
