- Well, the ending mission was rough (you didn't even see most of it cause Foe cut a lot of it out, and with good reason) but I really enjoyed this game overall. The ending was just a shame that instead of giving us a glorious fight where we held back loads of Reds, we just got hit with very fast arriving and insta-killing artillery, and even despite losing half my squad the other half easily handled the actual attack that came.

Langer: “Death is everywhere, I’m so depressed it’s making me lose faith”
*Langer says as he takes a swig from Vodka, and eats some beef jerky while bundled up in his insulated train car*
VENISON jerky no less.
"We are running out of supplies and the men will starve." he says as the kitchen is serving venison by the haunch.
was I the only one that misread "insulated car" as "insulin car"?
He has so many suppplies he an entire car full of insulin! @@4T3hM4kr0n
"We must begin to ration"
Rimmy, who has been throwing supplies overboard because they can't carry everything:
I love this game
That always vexes me. When there are abundant resources, but you just can't utilize them.
"Gods Damnit Langer" is basically the series' unofficial motto
This game has really good presentation, music and atmosphere, the mechanics are solid but this is where it falls short. I just can't take it seriously when that guy never shuts about not having enough resources and food, when during the whole game I had like 2 weeks of food. Totally destroys the immersion lol. They should have tweaked the difficulty a bit more since it's soooo easy to get resources
@@tabushka292I kept running out of metal and whatnot, but otherwise I had a constant 200 or so buffer on food and coal. It was too easy and not time stringent enough to get all the resource zones.
I was expecting the ending to be this large labor project where you have to repair the boat and cannibalize your train to do so. maybe this game is one of those cases where the journey is more important then the destination
this, i would've expected that the repairs of the ship would change depending on what your engine was, and the amount of defensive positions you can create from the wagons you brought in,
@@rrenkrieg7988I’m disappointed the game wasn’t like this.
"Thinks are looking dire." , Langer said as he sits at his desk made of gold, opening his third bottle of Vodka (He only drinks the first sip, it gets so stale after that so he just throws out the rest) and ordering a whole deer for dinner from the food car.
"Sir, we have so many boxcars full of food, lumber, medicine, and coal that we had to purchase a second locomotive to pull it all"
Captain Langer: "The hunger pangs claw at our stomachs with increasing frequency!"
“Just because you’re on a hunger strike doesn’t mean everyone is Langer”
The incident with Morozov reminds me of one of my favorite sayings;
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, except for artillery. Artillery will just fucking kill us."
Langer: We need to ration our food and supplies.
Major: Look, I'm doing my best to maximize everyone's ability to eat but there's so much you can do with a full stomach!
I think the main reason why Langer left the train before the final fight in the port is to pretty much secure "an ending". The enemy is wiped out, the story ended, with Langer writing the book of how you and your crew goes home. You get wiped out, the story ends with Langer writing a book of how you all fought to a futile end. Either ways, Langer will survive because who will be narrating the story but him?
i thought because he took a gun but no coat he went out to kill himself
@@Mast3rB3ard same.
"We are doomed!" Langer said, passing the best medical cart money can buy... Bandages, and penicelin everywhere you look.
A full twenty seven years before it would be invented. Impressive.
“We’ve lost all hope,” Captain Langer moans as the Major fans him because it’s too hot in the Siberian cabin train, while sipping an iced drink and enjoying a well prepared venison dinner.
Run from him, hide from him
ROMAN SHALL FIND YOU EITHERWAY
As a Roman myself - i approve of this message
"CASIN, EET IS ME YUOR CASIN, LETS GO BOWLING!"
Roman calling you from the afterlife to go hang out
That artillery strike would have me restarting the mission right then and there. I may be a dirty savescummer, but that was just a smidge too much.
*Langer takes a bite of his Jerky*
"well its been fun"
*He says as he shoots the artillery shell under his feet killing himself from the crushing depression that has been caused by a lack of Roasted Chicken in the kitchen*
I feel like they need to add different cutscenes if your doing well on supplies. Langer was acting super depressed despite the fact you were living like kings throughout the campaign.
Rimmy: *has spent every video on this game getting ambushed in some way, shape and form*
Also Rimmy: *surprised Pikachu face when he gets ambushed again*
Rimmy "how many warcrimes can I fit into one video" Downunder plays with a train.
"Artillery adds dignity, to what would otherwise be an ugly brawl"
They brought Romans body along for extra cover.
Honestly Langer's hunger comments make me think this is him writing the book and thinking readers would feel disappointed to learn that the Legion had to go on a DIET when they got home.
I love the thought of a bunch of Czechoslovak Legionaries teaching a farm girl to shoot a rifle. I'd love to see that in an anime. It's so adorable and I love it!
5:52 And Rimmy found his dream girl, a tomboy Legionnaire.
6:29 This whole bit with the girls is too funny not to love.
9:19 And this is why Rimmy is allowed to use explosives.
11:19 Never be a high ranking officer in Rimmy's line of sight when he has access to artillery.
14:24 When you live a life of luxury and run low on one thing. Poor Langer.
14:41 From a massacre to a surprise Mark V. What a 180. Until the tank got knocked out by sniper fire.
15:19 Rimmy is being haunted by the ghost of Roman!
16:48 Air Support baby! Based Pilots!
19:05 Langer nooo!
19:55 You'd think both sides would realize that you should fight against the Legion with generals in artillery range and tanks vulnerable to sniper fire.
24:13 The cat is the most important valuable to leave behind.
24:25 Langer you bastard!
At last, finally, home. It took so much effort, and many lives. But the journey is complete. This game is so amazing, the tale of the Czechoslovak Legion is amazing, and I hope they add more to it in the future. This is Last Train Home! And this was an amazing journey to be on! Until next time!
I was expecting Roman to pull up and John Wick his way through the artillery
I think Last Train Home is one of those games where the narrative isn't really adaptable to exploits, clever tactics, and just plowing ahead in general. That big fight with the General was supposed to be a "Massacre" where many of the characters we've come to care about died, yadda yadda yadda WW1 depression stuff. Yet nobody reconciled the ability to end the fight early with the rest of the narrative's growing hopelessness.
The tagline for the game might as well be "You're Not Supposed To Win."
So they didn’t account for people playing the game as it was intended? Because Rimmy didn’t use any exploits, he played it straight. So basically the devs were counting on players sucking at the game for their narrative, as it just doesn’t work unless you do. So either the devs need to add some alternate cutscenes for if you do well, where Langer isn’t so much of a defeatist, or they need to rebalance the game to make it as hard as the narrative is making it out to be
@@ntfoperative9432 I'm talking more about balance and difficulty stuff than poor writing. The Czechoslovak Legion is as much a tale of woe as a tale of heroism, so Langer being pessimistic and everyone being depressed is accurate.
Think of The Last Train as X-Com 1/2 or other turn-based tactical games like it, where outside Long War and mods which stack the stats and RNG odds heavily in the AI's favor, the player can hit a point of steamrolling the enemy both on the battlefield and on the strategic map.
The Last Train's narrative would probably feel more authentic in a Long War/Ironman scenario.
@@jamescousins9216 that’s kinda what I said. They either need to rebalance the game, or add in more optimistic cutscenes. Honestly I’d prefer the Former, because I love the story of the game, but it’s annoying how the pessimism of the cutscenes is constantly clashing with how well you’re actually doing
@@ntfoperative9432 Agreed. I don't think the story getting altered to have more of a conquering hero set of options would work, both in terms of what the game's built around and what the historical Legion went through.
Last Train Home isn't bad, it just stays with the rest of the pack in the genre by having few ways to challenge the player without massively lopsided stats or putting its thumb on the scale to ensure kills.
@@ntfoperative9432I’d say they generally didn’t account for people playing the game too well/too poorly to what they would’ve expected
Also doesn’t help that narrator Langer seems to be steering the narrative as the author he is after the journey, and the creative liberties he took made him kind of unreliable as a narrator

Edit: L
"Oooh they gonna have to glue you back together IN HELL"
I gotta give credit where credit is due, ending a speech with "Even if it means our certain death" is pretty hardcore
honestly i would have so reloaded that ending just because the arty was such a weird thing to suddenly throw at you in that position.
What was really weird was showing the bombers taking out the artillery, only to have it come back a short while later. I suppose it makes sense that the Reds would have more guns available, but it certainly makes the reward seem kinda cheap.
Honestly, what would have been cool would have been to place small areas of cover in the fort, and then have to artillery creep its way up from the front of the gap in the fortress, followed shortly by another way. That way, the player is forced to chose between abandoning their defensive positions and risk being overrun in order to find cover, or hold their ground and risk a shell being dropped on their heads. The planes could then come in near the end of the battle, at a point where a massive barrage is about to be called in, and prevent that from even going off.
@@1ManRandomYeah, just like the final storm in Frostpunk. Just when everything seems to lead to the inevitable death, the planes appear from the dark skies to offer that last glimmer of hope.
@@1ManRandomThat's a pretty good idea. Perhaps they could make that enemy artillery a wide AOE RNG thing that does not instakill on a bad roll. Make it so if you are in proper cover staying in a zone threatened by artillery is a calculated risk.
@@1ManRandom It's weird because once the planes took the guns out in my playthrough, all of the shelling stopped, forever since. Might just have been a bug or something?
Lol, just how this became the playthrough of "What really happened" vs Langer's defeatist retelling in his journals.
I could imagine there being, like, an infinite survival scenario, where you try and see how far you can get before the combination of dwindling resources, increasing threat, etc, wipes you out.
Kinda like frostpunk with a train
i want that to exist that sounds like such a good game@@notsosolowing1295
The reds wanted to enact some of their own revenge in the last battle for all the commanderartillery deaths lol
When I'm in defeatist competition and my opponent is Langer
I like how when a cat randomly shows up the answer to it is always "I don't know where it came from"
I love how self rewarding helping the Romanovs was. You sent them off with a guard and food and you made more than double the food back and an even better soldier immediately.
Langer: supplies are low, the situation desperate
The single train being better equipped then either the reds or whites: Co?
This is exactly the kind of game that I am both massively intrigued by and horrible at. Thank you, Rimmy, for playing this so I can get away without having to.
Hold up, did Captain Langer literally just ditch yall and make his way to the boat for you all to fight at the end all on your own?
My headcanon is that he went and helped the sorty from the ship to capture the city while the players takes the fort
knowing Langer's defeatist attitude and overwhelming guilt over everything and the fact he didnt bring a coat in freaking Russia and how he says goodbye to the major. I think he was contemplating suicide especially since he made peace with himself. But he came to his senses and board the ship. That's what i think.

I’m surprised Sabaton haven’t done a song about the Czech Legion trapped in Russia. Especially since they’ve done songs about the Czechs before
One can hope it's on their list of TO DO:
Its even more surprising considering joachim is HALF CZECH
Im more surprised over why they choose to take a train all the way to a city on the other end of Russia. I mean, they are going like 1000 kilometers in the wrong way to take a boat to get home to a land locked country. Not sure if it makes sense, I would rather take the train and get the fastest and shortest route home (Bare in mind I only watched the last two videos, so I dont know if the game explains why they could take the train home direct)
@@Danspy501st You know this is based on real life…Like this actually happened. This is like you saying you don’t understand why a game has countries waging a massive war over a tiny country called Serbia. Like it’s based on real life, they actually did that.
@@kgapaneseschoolgirlb I know, but as I explained earlier, I havent seen the first video of the game, so for me I dont understand why they need to go to a port city that is connected to Pacfic Ocean, to take a ship all the way to Europe to a country that is landlocked. I know it happens shortly after (Or during) WW1, and I dont have any clear idea where they were based. If they were based in Siberia, then I would understand them needing to go to Vladivostok first. But if they had been based and deployed on the easten front against the Germans or Austria, then I just cant understand why they need to travel for so long, then the most direct route is far shorter.
Beside, I dont think you had taken time to read on what I wrote
7:40 Blue balls debuff
I was looking for this
I do wish that the end of the game would just be a final stand that would span days, depending on how much resources you have on your train.
and its just you and your group trying to survive wave after wave of reds. getting sent down on you, as you set up defensive barricades and weapons to repel them.
until you manage to get the ship ready for your departure. and every decision you make though out the campaign either aid you or hinder you in that last stand.
and you either die trying to protect that point, or you go home with everyone alive.
10:14 that reminds me of a odd thing that happens in the first man of war in the mission on the american campaing that you defend a depo with some brithis reservers and when back up arrives a single german soldier its on the player comand xD
I love “rimmy downsyndrome”
i have 100 likes very quickly so i would like to point out the tomboy legionairs.
You spelled syndrome wrong.
@@justaguy723thank you
I feel like this game could benefit from an "endless" mode, maybe even a procedurely randomly-generated mode where it works on a kind of day-night cycle and a day system (where each survived "day" is like a checkpoint/has a checkpoint you must reach in order to save your game). The campaign is baller on its own (minus the "final boss fight" at the end there), so i believe a cute update to let you go on a sort of endless journey would be kinda nice
The game's biggest determint was it's story writing because it did not achieve what it sought to achieve. Infact it often created the opposite emotions than what was originally intended by the writers. Show most clearly with Captain Langer's character. The writers really thought he was a deep sympathetic character when he was anything but that for most of the players.
When the war is so bad even the dead get scars. *proceeds to trip over the 30 cans of food*
this is such a good series. i love hearing your insights and thoughts during this as well as the sillies
It's a shame that the ending overdid Artillery so much. However overall one could *really* notice throughout the videos just how much fun you were having with the game, which is great to see.
The game really needs alternate scenes to actually reflect what is going on or a difficulty tweak. I know it’s going for a “war is hell” tone but the gameplay clashes badly if you try to be smart with your tactics (Like Rimmy blasting generals with arty, insta winning, and the game going on about how neither side won). Then they pull a cheap ass pull to make sure some of your dudes die to insta death arty on the final mission to hammer in the message by force by making you despair from unfair shit happening but only feels like a “fuck you” by the devs to the players.
nice my cheer made it into the video nice, thank you rimmy
I finished watching the whole series you made of this game earlier today- snow hit hard so we've been stuck inside but this gave me a good way to pass a few hours. Thanks Rim.
Definitely gonna need to pick up this game and see how different it really gets playthrough to playthrough.
Rimmy joking about his characters in negative temperatures. "Oh no my soldiers are cold. meanwhile me in actual negative temperatures rn: "this f'ing blows!"
Great thing you missed is that at the end you can read how are the lives of the soldiers you brought home. What they do in their homeland, how they adapt to living in peace once again. Some stayed in the army, one started bussines, some moved to the countryside, somebody become musician... Also names of the soldiers in game are references to people who developed the game. When I saw the credits, I shouted I know these names, I spend last 26 hours with them.
The Ghost of Roman was haunting Rimmy.
This was Great, I Really Like the History behind this Game and how They Use All These Things to Make Such a Great RTS 👍
I was like “wait I’ve seen this before” when the civilians grabbed pitch forks and then it immediately cuts to the bridge scene I watched on stream lol
Lmao, that moment where Rimmy drops two earthshaker rounds on the enemy commander XD.
Loved the video @RimmyDownunder! Can't wait for the next video man! Not gonna lie though, but I thought Captain Langer was just going to walk off the Train and Shoot himself, I legit didn't expect him to just Leg it the Rest of the way to Vladivostok LMAO!
As for that ending the only thing I'd say is to maybe send about a Hundred or so Reds in 3 waves or something with some Mark V and Cannon-Armed FT-17 Tanks (FT-17 Males) as Follows....
• Wave 1: Starts with an Artillery Barrage (In spite of the Battery having been bombed by Gotha G.V Bombers) which lasts for about 10 to 20 Seconds. Then sends in a Company of Soldiers (in reality it what most other nations call a platoon) with 42 Soldiers.
• Wave 2: As before, Starts with an Artillery Barrage, this time for about 30 Seconds. Then sends in a Company of Soldiers with 42 Soldiers and Armor Support in the form of 2 or 3 FT-17 Tanks.
• Wave 3: as with the last 2 Waves, Starts with an Artillery Barrage this time for 1 minute, before sending in the Rest of the Battalon (or Company to everyone else) with the Last 2 Companies of 42 Soldiers and the HQ of 6 Soldiers along with the Kommisar and up to 6 Machine Guns (depending upon Difficulty Level) and Armor Support in the form of 2 Mark V Tanks.
This is at least an Idea for the Ending, it might not necessarily be just that but maybe something along those lines.
Also, New Content might be in the Form of a new Conflict 30 Years later with a Certain Neighbor to the Northwest in September 1939. Yes, I'm talking about the Czech Legion having to fight for their own homes as Germany Annexed and Invades Czechoslovakia. Imagine you just go through the Wehrmacht and you just see a Panzer I or a Panzer II C Light Tank and just deal with them like the FT-17's only to come across a Panzer III D, E or F Tank which has more health and will be More likely to mow you down.
Let me know what you think about this and I'll catch you in your next video man!
That face when a single train full of supposedly dying legionaries from a country that may or may not still exist when they get there assembles a combined arms capability sufficient to defeat the entire red army. First artillery and now air power. I am starting to feel bad for the russians.
See the way this game looks and somewhat behaves reminds me alot of partersons 1941 which i find very nice as both have the similar feeling of "we are a small few fighting a big threat for our survival"
Rimmy I really enjoy these kinds of videos you make. Still anxiously waiting for the rogue trader continuation, I hope you like doing this.

i would LOVE to see you take the other path because i would imagine it would be different, the ending is most likely the same, but im sure there will be some fun storyline stuff or quests to make a video on, even if the entire route is edited down into one video, it would still be nice to see
Thankyou to the devs for an amazing game
thankyou to Rimmy for an amazing channel
with some updates the game can really become even more amazing tbh
I feel like they are really expecting you to have a much harder time with this game than Rimmy is clearly having, makes me wonder if it needs a difficulty tweak or of Rimbo is just a fucking gamer.
I think this train alone can change the tide of the war and the course of history, simply by driving back to Moscow at this point. 17:20
Czechoslovak Train Goes BRRRRRRRRR
bardzo dobre video nie mogę się doczekać kolejnego.
This game was a treat to watch you play, and the history behind it was something I was entirely unaware of. That being said go play Banner Saga, its almost this but turn based combat and vikings.

Nobody:
Baba: Take this bodkha and get the phuk out of my house
Just a small thing about your choice with the royal family: your gut instinct was right. Well played paranoia, lad.
This games cutscene budget is amazing
Maybe that final mission wouldn't feel so cheap if they introduced artillery strikes in previous missions. I've heard that the Soviets were partial to it.
That bloody arty strike was so maddening for me that I outright restarted and broke my self "iron-man" rule. It's weird because to be frank, the game isn't that hard except at that point, maybe even during the assault against the Red General, and both times is because of how quick is the enemy arty to fuck you over PX
11:37 this is soooo statisfining😊
The people who made this game KNEW their audience, I'll say that much.
Yeah this is romanticised as hell. The fighting between the legion and the red army didn't start until they reached Vladivostok irl due to them refusing to let themselves be disarmed after the legion got into a fight with some Hungarian loyalists and before that they were let through and mostly were just negotiating with the Bolsheviks yet for some reason in this game the fighting immediately starts in Moscow with the Reds betraying them for the luls. I was expecting more of an RPG from this game than just a commie killing simulator. If they needed there to still be fighting in the early game, the Legion fought the German army besides Red Army in Ukraine but again you're just fighting reds here.
The Moscow betrayal in this game really makes no sense because IRL the red army wanted to have the legion leave without trouble initially so they could convince the Entente that they weren't pro-German.
dramatic ending. for movie plot reasons. welcome to ww1 tactics and life experience. artillery god of the battlefield
The word of the day is *Ludonarrative Dissonance*! Yaaaaaay! ^_^
Hey, I just stumbled upon your channel. Not sure if you read comments, but I liked your style and I'm into these types of strategy games. You might be interested in a game called Soldiers of Anarchy. It's like Men of War, set after some virus apocalypse (been a while since I played). You get soldiers by freeing people in missions and weapons and ammo by looting enemy bodies and their positions. You can even steal enemy vehicles if you manage to kill the crew without destryoing the vehicle. There is also trading. It's ancient and a little jank but it has a lot going for it! You set up ambushes with your infantry and vehicles to kill enemies without getting injured and wasting too much ammo, it's fun and satisfying when you coordinate 4 guys with rpgs and 2 tanks to fire at the same time to clear and area with like 3 humvees and a tank lol. Getting hold of a copy in 2024 might be difficult tho
Roman's here to warn you, you will be haunted by three spirits...
this game quests is like playing poker with a blindfold. Specially if you play it first time.
great game still, but damn that end battle was....something else
7:26 cooties are no laughing matter, major
Maybe the creepy lady brought Roman back from the death after you beat her at her horn game lol.
Roman is currently being eaten by wolfs and we don't know it yet
I still want opportunities to create major alternative histories.
Nice finally the continuation
Let’s just called this episode the god damn episode
5:55 is that Abigail Thorne? From philosophy tube
That stolen Russian cat better have been named Nyalin
Roman gained the trait: dead, but tomorrow.
That rationing thing caught me off guard. xD had ti keep my voice down not to wake anybody up.
I would love if this game added the bonkers naval escapades some legion troops got into on lake Baikal
i was devastated to lose two guys in Vladivostock so close to escape but interestingly I lost my guys to attackers from the porticullis entrance,i wasn't aware of no losses to artillery. also lost a guy to frosbite.
I did have some issues with food in midgame, but the cooking cart solved all my woes
Sadly I never managed to fit an artillery car in, by the time I felt i could ditch the workshop or cook car there were no more opportunities to nab one
Regarding the arty in the final mission, I just spread my boys way out and stayed in cover unless I knew I could get out of the circle, patched up after with medics. Might have helped most of my positions were a fair bit more forward, they seemed to whiff most of their shots a bit further in
8:35 Did I just see a Rock and Stone?
14:35 Someone needs to draw this
Mr. Downunder, I recommend you play this really underrated *mobile* RTS game; it covers the almosr FULL history of Poland's January Uprising during 1863, with *all* the real characters of political figures
It's officially funded by the National Polish History Museum and more museums and other organisations and published by Fundacja Interaktywna
It's titled *'Powstanie Styczniowe'* or *'January Uprising'* (it's name is different depending to your region)
Remember that it's MOBILE and the game focuses on historical accuracy, so you may be fighting the whole Russian Patrol Corps with just a few melee farmers and injured riflemen, even at the lowest difficulty in further battles
Oh damn it continues!
I'd recommending revisiting line war, but at least if you do it has a super friendly and helpful discord. It also progressed a ton in terms of balance and QoL
Also has AI coming out eventually (there is a singular dev)
Great game!
