I am starting a program on EDx for software development. I have worked in web design as a freelancer and with a small agency for 3 years now, and after 1 term of college ($3,000 for TWO college intro classes) I can't bring myself to get in debt for 4 years of classes that may or may not guarantee me a job. I have a few connections with multiple professionals in the software development industry who have high paying 6-figure jobs and they have talked to me about how employers only care about experience, knowledge, and passion. They also have said employers aren't going to turn you away if you have the skills and knowledge for software development, but are only lacking a four-year uni degree. I am planning on pursuing multiple online professional certificate programs that give you the same skills that a four year university degree does, without having to pay for 80+ credits of elective classes and ridiculous fees. But I am still wondering how seriously employers in the area of web development and software design take such professional certificates, like the ones offered in the paid EDx courses.
These certifications are very serious. Because they are offered by Universities that have Masters Programs so these certifications are considered equivalent in their education. Offcourse everything depends on the skills you acquire.

Yes if you complete the degree and gain the skills that are required for getting a job. Read a few job description from companies that you are interested in and then do your planning accordingly.
Find a job. If you already have a degree in MSc IT then you are well qualified to work in the IT Industry. Once you join the industry then find course to enhance your existing knowledge depending on the tools and technology you are working on.

IIM Bangalore is a very reputed institution. Just think if you had to go to IIM Bangalore and complete this course then how much time, energy and money you would have to invest. If you sincerely complete the course with all the assessments required. Then you will get the same benefit that any one from IIM Bangalore will get. You can skip college but why do you want to skip 12th standard. Don't do that if possible. If you are facing challenge of money that is required to invest in college then yes if you do any of the courses from platforms like EdX or Coursera then it will work. If you work on your own and learn everything on your own. Then initially you will have to find some startups to work with. Be very honest that because you did not have money you decided to learn everything on your own. There are companies that also pay for College education. But then you have to work for these companies for 5 years after that. I have heard in India companies like IBM, Wipro and Shopify, and many others fund your education. You can learn while you earn and you can also complete graduation. Then you also work for these companies for 5 years. It is like you can join Army Engineering School and even in that you get free engineering education. But then you have to give 5 years to army. After that you can come out of that and work like a civilian. I would suggest. Don't skip college because college is a beautiful experience. If you can find someone who is ready to fund your college then get it funded. But remember only to join a course you like and the work you want to do in future. Because a lot of people go to college without having the passion to learn. Finally they end up frustrated because they expect that just passing out of college will give them a job. In any course you have to do some extra work so that the learning happens. For most CS courses you have to do a real project and submit. You cannot copy. You cannot give substandard project. So all these factors apply. There is a reason that these certificates are valuable. Because to get them you have to work a little extra. Also people who can work extra seperate themselves from others.

No depending on the course the assessment and certification will change. So you are good. Now the only thing required is to make sure you study well so when you go for interview for a related job you can prove yourself.

Edx has courses that are of Graduation and Post Graduation level. This may or may not work for you. Because you may find that they are talking beyond your High School Education. You will need to finish 12th and after that you can start learning whatever subjects you are interested in from Edx.

Yes courses on Edx can help you get a job. But then it is like any other education system. It depends entirely on what did you learn and how you can use the skills you gathered during the course. The curriculum is designed in a orderly fashion. One lesson after another. They have courses with 10 to 15 mins video teaching you an experience. And then you can practice or answer questions. Study some reference materials. Etc. You also get evaluated with the assessment. You will get a certificate when you complete the assessment. Hi Shoaib, Getting good score is the starting but you have to convince the professors that you need a scholarship. For that you may have to take help of some local institution who may be able to help. In Pune my friend used to go to Oaks Academy and they guided him for everything with respect to getting the best university and scholarship. Initially he still had to work in a cafe.or as liftman but then his sponsorship got approved only in 2nd semester. So you will need to be ready. But yes getting good marks can open more doors.
You don't get a Physical Certificate from most of the Online Platforms. Even Edx clearly says here support.edx.org/hc/en-us/articles/207206647-How-are-edX-certificates-delivered that you have the option to view or share or print your certificate. This access to the certificate will remain till there is Edx. Look if you get a certificate from Edx or similar platforms then no company will ask a physical copy of the certificate. Yes but before you enroll into the course check the requirement. If the course requires you to have maths in your curriculum then it will be difficult for you to complete the course without maths. So please check the requirement. Connect with support and find out if you can do the course and that the course does not have any requirement of maths.
Technology is changing every day. So you have to go by what you need today or within a year. You cannot see the future 5 years ahead. I remember at one company in 2010 we invested heavily in Silverlight Technology of Microsoft. We were moving our core framework completely to that technology. Then in 2013 after having spent close to 3 years we saw that Microsoft was silently killing the Silverlight Technology. Start with a programming language. I have a video on my channel talking about Top 20 Programming Languages. You can see that Java is so old but on the list. There is also Python which is old but become popular. So you can learn those technologies. Also, I have another video on the Highest Paying Jobs in Software. These streams of the software will last for at least 10 to 20 years. Because a lot of companies have invested heavily in these technologies. The important thing to understand is that go by what you like so that you can create a long term career in that subject. Getting a good university abroad will depend on various factors like tests that are required to be cleared. Along with that they will look at your current BArch Marks and compare them to their own university marks. Just certificate of completion does not work. You may have to talk to someone who has already gone from BArch so that you know what is the process.

Yes EdX and even Coursera has Free CS50 Course which is a fundamentals course in Computer Science. You can start with that and then upgrade yourself as you move forward. These courses are free on these platform.

Certificate depends on two things one is on the value of the course or institution itself. And the process used for assessment. If you only get a certificate as a completion certificate then that has lesser value than a certificate you get when there is a proper exam involved. And there are points or marks involved. So make your decision based on that. Check the resources page in description look at those courses you will see why they are more valuable.

Proctored exams is an exam in front of a supervisor. It means when you take the exam there will be someone who will keep a watch over you. This can happen by the way of exam centre or even online when you give an exam there is someone watching over you by having a control of your cam mouse and keyboard.

Yes, If you dont do certification but you sincerely complete the course and learn everything you can so that you can excel in interviews then you can get a job without certificate. Certificate does not give you a job. It only opens up additional opportunities where the HR calls you for interview just because they see your certificate so they think that you will know what they need for the job role and position. But after that you still have to prove in all the interview rounds.
Hello Boopa, First find out what it means to be a computer programmer. If you have any of your friends in Programming. Ask them which programming language they know. See whether you understand coding. In case coding is difficult then you can go into Database Design and Management. Or you can get into Data Science where you can become a Data Scientist even without knowledge of programming or with just basic programming. Whatever you want to do it will depend whether you can generate interest. You can just pick some book that will give you an introduction of this field. Data Science for Dummies or Programming for Dummies or Web Development for Dummies. Try to see if this subject is interesting. If it is interesting then Dummies will get you to a starting point in that field or area. Then you can expand by doing some advanced courses online once you understand the basics.

Since you are moving from one industry to another. CS50 is a basic programming course. After that you should do some certification on some course that can help you in Software Development. Like Web Development with Java or Python. Certification can help you get into the IT Industry. Other option is to get into Data Science. Because in Data Science you can combine your Oil and Gas field as well as your knowledge of Data Science. That way your experience may be useful and not go waste.
I feel you have to study and give it again. Please understand that these platform have a very strict assessment. You have to pay lets say Rs 24,000 for the course then it is Rs 6000 to Rs 4,000 per month. Engineering college fees for a regular student is Rs 10 Lac for Four Years. If you do Masters in US then the fees is about $30,000 to $40,000 including most things. Now is Rs 24,000 good if you want to progress in your career when you are getting the same knowledge that the Masters students get by Spending $30,000 you decide. Another thing is if you are sincere. If you really want to grow your career. And you decide to specialise in some advanced technology while you are working like, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Full Stack Development etc. Then your income will immediately double. Even if you paid Rs 48,000 for your course. Within one year if your income can double then will this not be worth it. If you have a job then save this money. Dont spend it on trivial things. Sir, if we are learn or pursue any free course on this platform, definitely we can learn and enhance our skills but as we will not receive any certificates for it then how can we mention them in our cv/ resume?, or then also it will be right to mention the course name in our resume wmeven if we do not have the certificate?
The only thing people cannot steal from you is your knowledge. They can take away your money. They can take away your job. They can take away your prestige. But what they cannot ever take away from you is your knowledge. Stop doing any course unless you really are passionate about the subject and want to do it to enhance your knowledge. In the same way a software engineer is only as good as his last project. You can get a job after professional certificate in data science from Harvard. But it is not equivalent to Graduation Degree or any Diploma. It is just a professional certificate. It is useful to enhance your skills. But there are companies who will not care about your Degree or Diploma or lack of it. They will accept your professional certificate.

When doing your BCA learn one programming language really well. Either Java or Python or PHP. These programming languages are used in Web Development. Then learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for Frontend Development. And you can use either PHP or Python or Java for Backend Development. Also, I learn to handle one database like MySQL or MongoDB. Using all these tools you can start building website applications. Initially build a very simple web application. Maybe like some calculator that takes some inputs to calculate and show the outputs. Once you understand the end to end process then start building complex web applications. Since you are going to start BCA you will learn these things in that just you need to pay attention.

I don't think it is only by paying you to get a certificate. You need to complete the course. Do all the assignments as required by the course. Then you have to submit the assignments. Only if your assignments are approved then you get a certification. Please read the page I have shared with you to understand the details. That is the reason these platforms are very valuable and companies trust these certificates.

@@pimpam9517 I think you will have to catch someone in support for this question. I am not sure about the exact rules. I know that when you do a course from any of these big platforms where universities and big companies are involved. Not everyone gets a certificate. Only those people get the certificates who complete the courses on time and with a proper assessment. If you have done that then you should get it. Other thing is if you had completed the course long back and did not download the certificate then that you can go and download it anytime I think. It will have the date when you completed your course.

You will find some accounting certifications on EdX. In that you will see GPAA which is Global Accounting Practices being taught. When you learn such skills then you can join companies like Ernst & Young or Price Water Copper etc that deal in helping international business with setting up business in any country. You can also think about doing ICWA or CA post your BCom to become better in you Accounting knowledge. In case you want to transition to IT Industry then you will need to learn some kind of programming language. But you can also join some IT company in the finance department to manage their accounts.

I didnt asked them bc i changed my course but later i login my edx acc in goggle it was given that i can still pursue the certificate within 10 days even tho if you want more extended way you can create new acc for edx through gmail and reenroll for course again so you will get extended dates for the course
Both are Amazing. Coursera has more courses. But eDX also has options for doing Bachelors and Masters at a reduced cost. So if you are not able to go to college then you can do your bachelor of engineering from eDX directly from home. The fees is 1/3 rd or 1/4th if you had to take the actual course in college. Coursera does not have this facility. But for certification courses both are comparable and have a good reputation in the industry. They are acceptable across the software industry. I had the same problem. Make sure your lighting is really good in your photo. As far as the ID photo, I taped mine to a piece of all white paper and that helped me get the approval for the verification.

Yes, it does. But you can also create your own personal Paypal account and link it to your card or bank. I manage most of my international payments via Paypal. I find it much easier. Also, you get a record of all your international payments in one place within Paypal. EDx is a very reputed platform. But I also take up courses from individual websites that are international. In that case, I always use my Paypal account which is linked to my bank or credit card.
They have their own system of checking assignments. What is that system you will have to findout on the FAQ related to the course. Some courses just have an exam with optional choice. Some require you to write a paper. Others have project involved. So depending on the specific course the exam will be determined. The best place to look is their FAQ on how you get a certificate.
Hello Asaka, For CS50 you don't have any prerequisites. So you can do it anytime. But if you are from India then 12 Board Exams are very important. Even if you want to study abroad the 12 Board Results are important. So I would first focus on making sure that is on track. Then I would do anything additional. I don't think that is possible anywhere. In Coursera, there was a promotion a year back where they were offering unlimited courses for something like Rs 25,000 annually. I am starting a program on EDx for software development. I have worked in web design as a freelancer and with a small agency for 3 years now, and after 1 term of college ($3,000 for TWO college intro classes) I can't bring myself to get in debt for 4 years of classes that may or may not guarantee me a job. I have a few connections with multiple professionals in the software development industry who have high paying 6-figure jobs and they have talked to me about how employers only care about experience, knowledge, and passion.
They also have said employers aren't going to turn you away if you have the skills and knowledge for software development, but are only lacking a four-year uni degree. I am planning on pursuing multiple online professional certificate programs that give you the same skills that a four year university degree does, without having to pay for 80+ credits of elective classes and ridiculous fees. But I am still wondering how seriously employers in the area of web development and software design take such professional certificates, like the ones offered in the paid EDx courses.
These certifications are very serious. Because they are offered by Universities that have Masters Programs so these certifications are considered equivalent in their education. Offcourse everything depends on the skills you acquire.

IIM Bangalore is a very reputed institution. Just think if you had to go to IIM Bangalore and complete this course then how much time, energy and money you would have to invest. If you sincerely complete the course with all the assessments required. Then you will get the same benefit that any one from IIM Bangalore will get. So focus on your current task to complete the course and making sure it helps you gain the knowledge required for management. Because whatever you learn will be required in your interview at Job. You can skip college but why do you want to skip 12th standard. Don't do that if possible. If you are facing challenge of money that is required to invest in college then yes if you do any of the courses from platforms like EdX or Coursera then it will work. If you work on your own and learn everything on your own. Then initially you will have to find some startups to work with. Be very honest that because you did not have money you decided to learn everything on your own. There are companies that also pay for College education. But then you have to work for these companies for 5 years after that. I have heard in India companies like IBM, Wipro and Shopify, and many others fund your education. You can learn while you earn and you can also complete graduation. Then you also work for these companies for 5 years. It is like you can join Army Engineering School and even in that you get free engineering education. But then you have to give 5 years to army. After that you can come out of that and work like a civilian. I would suggest. Don't skip college because college is a beautiful experience. If you can find someone who is ready to fund your college then get it funded. But remember only to join a course you like and the work you want to do in future. Because a lot of people go to college without having the passion to learn. Finally they end up frustrated because they expect that just passing out of college will give them a job. That does not happen. I hope this works for you.

In any course you have to do some extra work so that the learning happens. For most CS courses you have to do a real project and submit. You cannot copy. You cannot give substandard project. So all these factors apply. There is a reason that these certificates are valuable. Because to get them you have to work a little extra. Also people who can work extra seperate themselves from others.

Thanks for your reply. The course I’m taking is Digital Biomaterials by the University of Hong Kong. So, it’s an informative course, there aren’t any projects as such to complete. Just the end of module conclusion tests at the very end. Will I still have to do further research in order to pass?
No depending on the course the assessment and certification will change. So you are good. Now the only thing required is to make sure you study well so when you go for interview for a related job you can prove yourself.

Yes courses on Edx can help you get a job. But then it is like any other education system. It depends entirely on what did you learn and how you can use the skills you gathered during the course. The curriculum is designed in a orderly fashion. One lesson after another. They have courses with 10 to 15 mins video teaching you an experience. And then you can practice or answer questions. Study some reference materials. Etc. You also get evaluated with the assessment. You will get a certificate when you complete the assessment. Hi Shoaib, Getting good score is the starting but you have to convince the professors that you need a scholarship. For that you may have to take help of some local institution who may be able to help. In Pune my friend used to go to Oaks Academy and they guided him for everything with respect to getting the best university and scholarship. Initially he still had to work in a cafe.or as liftman but then his sponsorship got approved only in 2nd semester. So you will need to be ready. But yes getting good marks can open more doors.
How to get original physical certificates from edx? Not electronics form
You don't get a Physical Certificate from most of the Online Platforms. Even Edx clearly says here support.edx.org/hc/en-us/articles/207206647-How-are-edX-certificates-delivered that you have the option to view or share or print your certificate. This access to the certificate will remain till there is Edx. Look if you get a certificate from Edx or similar platforms then no company will ask a physical copy of the certificate. Technology is changing every day. So you have to go by what you need today or within a year. You cannot see the future 5 years ahead. I remember at one company in 2010 we invested heavily in Silverlight Technology of Microsoft. We were moving our core framework completely to that technology. Then in 2013 after having spent close to 3 years we saw that Microsoft was silently killing the Silverlight Technology. Start with a programming language. I have a video on my channel talking about Top 20 Programming Languages. You can see that Java is so old but on the list. There is also Python which is old but become popular. So you can learn those technologies. Also, I have another video on the Highest Paying Jobs in Software. These streams of the software will last for at least 10 to 20 years. Because a lot of companies have invested heavily in these technologies. The important thing to understand is that go by what you like so that you can create a long term career in that subject. I can provide you information but all the decisions you will have to make because it is your life. I also have a video on how to make a decision when you are choosing between two things.

Getting a good university abroad will depend on various factors like tests that are required to be cleared. Along with that they will look at your current BArch Marks and compare them to their own university marks. Just certificate of completion does not work. You may have to talk to someone who has already gone from BArch so that you know what is the process.

Certificate depends on two things one is on the value of the course or institution itself. And the process used for assessment. If you only get a certificate as a completion certificate then that has lesser value than a certificate you get when there is a proper exam involved. And there are points or marks involved. So make your decision based on that. Check the resources page in description look at those courses you will see why they are more valuable.

Proctored exams is an exam in front of a supervisor. It means when you take the exam there will be someone who will keep a watch over you. This can happen by the way of exam centre or even online when you give an exam there is someone watching over you by having a control of your cam mouse and keyboard.

Yes, If you dont do certification but you sincerely complete the course and learn everything you can so that you can excel in interviews then you can get a job without certificate. Certificate does not give you a job. It only opens up additional opportunities where the HR calls you for interview just because they see your certificate so they think that you will know what they need for the job role and position. But after that you still have to prove in all the interview rounds.

Hello Boopa, First find out what it means to be a computer programmer. If you have any of your friends in Programming. Ask them which programming language they know. See whether you understand coding. In case coding is difficult then you can go into Database Design and Management. Or you can get into Data Science where you can become a Data Scientist even without knowledge of programming or with just basic programming. Whatever you want to do it will depend whether you can generate interest. You can just pick some book that will give you an introduction of this field. Data Science for Dummies or Programming for Dummies or Web Development for Dummies. Try to see if this subject is interesting. If it is interesting then Dummies will get you to a starting point in that field or area. Then you can expand by doing some advanced courses online once you understand the basics.

Since you are moving from one industry to another. CS50 is a basic programming course. After that you should do some certification on some course that can help you in Software Development. Like Web Development with Java or Python. Certification can help you get into the IT Industry. Other option is to get into Data Science. Because in Data Science you can combine your Oil and Gas field as well as your knowledge of Data Science. That way your experience may be useful and not go waste.

You have to pay lets say Rs 24,000 for the course then it is Rs 6000 to Rs 4,000 per month. Engineering college fees for a regular student is Rs 10 Lac for Four Years. If you do Masters in US then the fees is about $30,000 to $40,000 including most things. Now is Rs 24,000 good if you want to progress in your career when you are getting the same knowledge that the Masters students get by Spending $30,000 you decide. Another thing is if you are sincere. If you really want to grow your career. And you decide to specialise in some advanced technology while you are working like, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Full Stack Development etc. Then your income will immediately double. Some courses are older than in 2016. Of course not much changes in Networking as such. Only new things get added. But the old networking protocol still remains intact. When doing your BCA learn one programming language really well. Either Java or Python or PHP. These programming languages are used in Web Development. Then learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for Frontend Development. And you can use either PHP or Python or Java for Backend Development. Also, I learn to handle one database like MySQL or MongoDB. Using all these tools you can start building website applications. Initially build a very simple web application. Maybe like some calculator that takes some inputs to calculate and show the outputs. Once you understand the end to end process then start building complex web applications. Since you are going to start BCA you will learn these things in that just you need to pay attention.

It's worth it for your experience, the courses are well-designed and endorsed by major institutions. At your age it's especially valuable because it shows your motivation and desire to learn.

Hello Pim Pam, You will find all the information regarding certification out here tidd.ly/428bcacb You not only have to pay for the certificate but you have to complete the course with assessment within a certain period. I don't think it is only by paying you to get a certificate. You need to complete the course. Do all the assignments as required by the course. Then you have to submit the assignments. Only if your assignments are approved then you get a certification. Please read the page I have shared with you to understand the details. That is the reason these platforms are very valuable and companies trust these certificates.

@@pimpam9517 I think you will have to catch someone in support for this question. I am not sure about the exact rules. I know that when you do a course from any of these big platforms where universities and big companies are involved. Not everyone gets a certificate. Only those people get the certificates who complete the courses on time and with a proper assessment. If you have done that then you should get it. Other thing is if you had completed the course long back and did not download the certificate then that you can go and download it anytime I think. It will have the date when you completed your course.

You will find some accounting certifications on EdX. In that you will see GPAA which is Global Accounting Practices being taught. When you learn such skills then you can join companies like Ernst & Young or Price Water Copper etc that deal in helping international business with setting up business in any country. You can also think about doing ICWA or CA post your BCom to become better in you Accounting knowledge. In case you want to transition to IT Industry then you will need to learn some kind of programming language. But you can also join some IT company in the finance department to manage their accounts.

I didnt asked them bc i changed my course but later i login my edx acc in goggle it was given that i can still pursue the certificate within 10 days even tho if you want more extended way you can create new acc for edx through gmail and reenroll for course again so you will get extended dates for the course

Both are Amazing. Coursera has more courses. But eDX also has options for doing Bachelors and Masters at a reduced cost. So if you are not able to go to college then you can do your bachelor of engineering from eDX directly from home. The fees is 1/3 rd or 1/4th if you had to take the actual course in college. Coursera does not have this facility. But for certification courses both are comparable and have a good reputation in the industry. They are acceptable across the software industry. I had the same problem. Make sure your lighting is really good in your photo. As far as the ID photo, I taped mine to a piece of all white paper and that helped me get the approval for the verification.

Yes, it does. But you can also create your own personal Paypal account and link it to your card or bank. I manage most of my international payments via Paypal. I find it much easier. Also, you get a record of all your international payments in one place within Paypal. EDx is a very reputed platform. But I also take up courses from individual websites that are international. In that case, I always use my Paypal account which is linked to my bank or credit card.

They have their own system of checking assignments. What is that system you will have to findout on the FAQ related to the course. Some courses just have an exam with optional choice. Some require you to write a paper. Others have project involved. So depending on the specific course the exam will be determined. The best place to look is their FAQ on how you get a certificate.

Hello Asaka, For CS50 you don't have any prerequisites. So you can do it anytime. But if you are from India then 12 Board Exams are very important. Even if you want to study abroad the 12 Board Results are important. So I would first focus on making sure that is on track. Then I would do anything additional. I don't think that is possible anywhere. In Coursera, there was a promotion a year back where they were offering unlimited courses for something like Rs 25,000 annually. In that, you could do any course that you wanted to do. One thing to keep in mind is starting is easy but finishing what you have started is difficult. So if you are doing something that is useful then finish that and move on to the next thing.

Hi Aravindraj, Job will depend on what you learn. Any certification or online course is similar to the education you get in the college. Even a college does not guarantee you any job. What you have to understand is that these online courses or certification help you quickly build skills that are most important in the industry. Like in Engineering Degree you learn a lot of subjects along with the main programming subjects. But these courses directly focus on that one or two important skills for job. So it will help you as a catalyst in finding a job but there is never a guarantee. You have to make yourself valuable with these courses by learning. That is a guarantee.
