While speaking a language implies you can use that language to speak, speaking IN a language just means the act of speaking is done in that language at that moment.

I guess you could always say that living in Europe gives him advantage in speaking those other languages, but his Chinese! As a native Chinese myself, I've never heard any other westerners pronounce Chinese that good! Many study for years and their pronunciation might not get as good as Tom. He's just amazing!!!!

Mandarin is my first language and his pronunciation is really not that great. Just understandable at best. It’s great that he makes an effort to at least greet people in their own language though.
i have to say, he probably learnt few words when he was in China, but his pronunciation is so good, better than any foreigner who speak Mandarin at the first time.

Okay, so he speaks French and Spanish somewhat simply, knows a song in Italian, two phrases in German, can say "Thank you" in Russian, and he memorized a couple of phrases in Chinese and Korean. Knowing a word or a phrase in a language does not mean you speak the language. That said, he is clearly very intelligent and likes to learn things, and it's nice that he makes an effort to learn a phrase or two to accommodate his audience. I think he was using the classicist pronunciation, which is how it's traditionally taught in British schools. I'm not 100% sure though

Okay, so he speaks French and Spanish somewhat simply, knows a song in Italian, two phrases in German, can say "Thank you" in Russian, and he memorized a couple of phrases in Chinese and Korean. Knowing a word or a phrase in a language does not mean you speak the language. That said, he is clearly very intelligent and likes to learn things, and it's nice that he makes an effort to learn a phrase or two to accommodate his audience. It's just silly for people to say he speaks five or six languages, because: no.
