An Army cook once told me the trick to powdered eggs was to put a busted up egg shell in the pot. That way when the troops bitched about eating powdered eggs again you can point out the egg shell and claim they are real eggs.
I’m pretty sure they did that at the restaurants in the university I attended. The pieces of shell in the eggs were better than the little stones in the beans.

@@oddshot60 I find the opposite. I only drink coffee plain ( or black as some say ). But now the coffee has to rest on it's own laurels without the aid of expensive additives. I have quickly learned that most "designer" coffees are absolute crap without the added creamers, sugar, etc.
Then you missed out on a few videos. Videos with the boys in the house, some reviews with a second opinion, his son on a motorcycle who is often behind the camera (featuring The Revenge of the Judge).
If I wanted an honest review of one of my products, to truly see how good it was or wasn't, I'd be looking for honest people like Paul to review it. Good or bad, I want to know the truth. Can't fix it if people lie to you.
Paul could never be accused of overselling anything. :) That said, nearly every packaged/processed food product I've ever used, be it Hamburger Helper, MREs, instant oatmeal, or whatever, have always needed some some amount of "doctoring" to be tasty at all.
Except for instant ramen. That seasoning packet is crazy! But this is a good point. Any prep should include a lot of salt and pepper, and a good amount of spices. They tend to keep a long time, and with a little seasoning and spice you can make crap food taste appetizing. Having salt on hand should be a no brainer for anybody who does any prepping at all. It's necessary for life, and it makes food taste good! Plus you can use it for preserving foraged and/or game foods.
I like that many of those didnt have a pack form where you have to consume the whole thing once opened. The freeze dried stuff could be eaten in small quantities to ward off starvation for an extended time.
The coffee and vitamins part cracked me up. Reminds me of the time Paul said instead of a Red Bull it'd be more efficient to just get a Coke, and a jar of vitamins 🤣 This guy is awesome.
When Paul said he'd start doing reviews to keep the channel afloat amidst demonitization, I knew I would enjoy the heck out of these videos and I was not wrong.
Paul I don’t hear your speech impediment at all in fact I don’t believe you have one. Your voice is relaxing and your videos have taught me a lot. Thank you
It looks like this line up was designed for a very specific type of "survival" in mind. Big cans of freeze dried food are good for stashing and long term living off the grid. As Paul mentioned, you need a lot of equipment to prepare this food, so it seems the best use will be as an emergency food bank somewhere in a cabin away from civilization. You can probably "survive" a couple of month if you prepared enough food like that.
On a lot of these "survival" meals and MRE's, the reason they are so bland, is the fact there are a lot of folk out there that have certain food allergies. These meals cut out a lot of seasonings, as well as nut derivatives, as these are the most common allergens. Plus this is suppose to be "survival" food, does it taste like crap? Yes, but you can survive on it. As far as the coffee goes, it has added protein and vitamins for the off chance that is all you have left, you can still get a bit of nutrients to keep you going.
MREs are designed to be as tasty as possible (and often are delicious depending on which one you get). They are not really a survival food and not a comparison to the foods Paul reviewed in this video because there's so many menu choices. In fact the US Military, in its laziness will often issue MREs in lieu of setting up a field kitchen because it's more convenient.

Yes! Paul needs to do a April’s fools video about watching paint dry, Please bear with the sound of a paint sprayer in the back ground. Now I will explain the process of how the water evaporates from the paint leaving a solid protective finish, that is water resistant! 😉 Please Paul.
My experience with egg powder: Whip, whip, and whip some more when mixing. A fork helps - the more air that can be incorporated into the mix, the lighter and fluffier the resulting scrambled eggs will be. Its also suggested to add a touch of powdered milk to it when mixing up the powder. It cooks up reasonably well, as normal scrambled eggs. I add rehydrated freeze dried sausage & onion to it, a packet of hot sauce, and wrap in a tortilla for a breakfast burrito. For anything oatmeal like: Just get your favorite brand of instant oatmeal packets and slip them, unopened, into a freezer grade zip top bag. It'll cost less and be comparable packaging. As for nutrition / fortified: Another solution to this is a simple, cheap, house brand multi-vitamin. Having seasonings like salt, pepper, pepper flakes, hot sauce, etc goes a long way toward making otherwise "meh" food more palatable. The Venn diagram between long distance hiker food (PCT, AT, etc) and survival food has a lot of overlap.
Gordon Ramsay...yeah, the know-it-all chef...he makes his scrambled eggs with water. That is lame. Cream or milk is the only way to go and you are right about using a fork.
I used to split pre-packaged items into separate meals and then vacuum seal them with an oxygen getter. For instance, your example would find individual portioned packages of dried eggs and milk, FD sausage and onion, a few hot sauce packs and a handful of the little paper salt and pepper packets all packed with an oxygen getter into one bag and vacuum sealed. Something like a boxed noodle side would get the box contents dumped into a bag along with a sealed package of dried milk and the cut-out section of the box containing the prep instructions, then vacuum sealed. I know it sounds like a lot of extra work, but I subscribe to the "slightly paranoid but shit DOES happen" method of camping. If I am planning on being in the woods for 3 days in the middle of the summer, I will try to pack food and water for 5 days...and at least a blanket and a set of long johns in addition to summer clothing. Shit happens. In theory, I could drive off right now without packing anything and be gone for a few days...If I really wanted to spend a few days under a tarp wrapped in a mylar blanket drinking water out of pouches and eating lifeboat rations. ALL of my vehicles have basic 72-hr kits, extra water, a blanket or two, etc. rattling around under seats, in the trunk, etc. Again, shit happens...so does drifting snow.
Some of these companies seem to hope you sit them on a shelf for the full 30 year shelf life before opening.. i.e. taste is not the primary goal, sales are. Thanks for the honest review.
I guess the real deciding factors would be (a) price and price per serving, (b) nutritional data and daily requirements (c) ease in preparation, (d) ability to transport and store, and finally (e) whether you'd really eat if or not in other than a survival situation. Big question for YOU Paul...would YOU buy it and take it along on a hunting trip, or would you buy it and store it in your bunker?
One BIG question that no one ever asks is...what do we do with all of that packaging trash??? Trash man will no longer be coming by...maybe not ever again. Burn it? Attract others with your large fire? Bury it? Animals dig it up and spread it around?
@@thomast8539 Those #10 tin cans would be a tough item in a pack. Littering will be the least of your concerns at that point anyway...other than keeping it from making folks track you more easily.

That said, nearly every packaged/processed food product I've ever used, be it Hamburger Helper, MREs, instant oatmeal, or whatever, have always needed some some amount of "doctoring" to be tasty at all.

It’s “survival” because it’s not really living if this is all your eating!
I really appreciate the fact that you tested these items in real time. Thank you.
Also, people have different tastes. One person spicy is another persons bland. it is very easy to add spice to taste. hard to take it out.
Yeah...NO! Coffee should be coffee.

Yup, chilli sauce hides a multitude of sins. 👍
When he said “salt, pepper, and… Tobasco sauce”, I really felt that. I used to take several bottles with me on deployments.
I swear Paul could make watching paint drying fun and educational! Well done sir always love your dry humor and facial expressions!
You know the ammo situation is bad when Uncle Paul starts reviewing food
