  • Greece 2024. Kalymnos to Heraklion on a Beechcraft Bonanza F33A! Tips on how to fly in Greece.
Everflywings fly from Kalymnos to Heraklion for refuelling. Heraklion is a busy airport serving the whole of Crete, receiving many charter and scheduled flights. We were asked to hold over a VFR point called Paximadi, which is a rock in the sea. It is a bit far from the active runway, so it is a bit hard to see the approaching traffic, especially when the day is hazy.
In order to fly in Greece it is important to read carefully the airport AIP and the Notams. It is almost always necessary to have a handler in order to land, as they will get for you a PPR. They also arrange refuelling, if the airport has fuel. The later is not very common.
Airports run by a German company called Fraport are very expensive. You'd better have an AOPA card, otherwise you will be charged quite a lot. In any case, ask for an estimate via e-mail before hand.
Following refuelling at Heraklion, we flew to Sitia!

Beautiful deep blue sea. Sounds like a pain with the NOTAMs and unpredictable hours but looks to be worth it.
