There were various types of lawmen in the Old West. He might have been a U.S. Marshal, appointed by the Attorney General; a Sheriff elected to office by the county residents, a Marshal appointed by the City Council, or a deputy, constable, ranger, or peace officer hired by a superior officer or authority.
they would just elect random people to be sheriff sometimes. And in boom towns you could get deputized right off because prospecting and cattle ranching was more profitable.
Id assume lots of time itd be anyone in town with military experience. Past that Id assume the next deciding factor would be town reputation. For the smaller towns the Sheriffs job was probably 90% solving little disputes so having it be the most trusted guy in town wouldve made sense. Deputizing was a pretty big thing especially in the mid sized towns where they were big enough to attract bandits but too small to have a full time dedicated police force. Funnily enough, some states still actually have deputization laws on the books although I doubt theyre used very often.
Honestly, Id be interested to see if Sheriff had a particularly high death rate. Cause on the one hand theyre the ones who have to lead defense of the town but on the other killing lawmen deliberately is gonna bring the state or even federal marshals down on your head much faster than even killing regular people

But not only that, you can choose for it to SOUND like any standard gun, so you could have a Doppelgun that acts like an AWP but sounds like a TEC-9, so you can snipe from afar but all anyone hears will be a TEC-9, or vice versa.
