    Also as a cheaper option to the peat try coconut coir mix it with diatomaceous earth and clay soil as it's the most common. The coir is high in salt so it absorbs the oils and it's sustainable the diatomaceous earth is abrasive and like mites and other parasite while the clay adds stability to the mix it's also absorbent and abrasive.

      Peat moss also isnt renewable so it is nice to have a renewable alternative in the cocnite coir

      ​@@briankeeney9272 its not. Peat is specifically moss from bogs from a certain part of the world. Its takes at least 25 years for moss from that bog to become peat moss but we use it at a much faster rate than it can be made. Its also just destroying natural swamp lands

    I would say mix in a little food grade dichotomous Earth it's very fine and sticks to the joints of bugs I use it in my coops to keep the bugs almost none existent

    My chickens are always bing chilling (laying down or dust bathing) in the shaded areas of my coop it gets 80-90°F possibly 100°F in July.

    I've given my birds access to dirt in a large run for almost 6 years. No trouble yet.

    You don't have to overthink it. Ash. That's all they need. Ofc no plastic, or nails in it, but if you have ash of any wood... They'd love it the most.

      We're actually not eating our pets (chickens included). Each one has its own job or multiple.
      Horse n pony keep the lawn cut down.
      Cat kills rodents (in house during cold months n he moves himself to our storage trailer during warmer months.. he has a way out. We let him back in when we go in. Lol)
      Chickens eat the ticks n whatever other bugs.
      Dog helps keep most ground predators away when she's outside.

      Well....considering it's literally volcanic shards of cooled and puffed up molten glass,yeah I'd say eating it is a lil painful when they eat it for grit in their craw? I'd prolly go with @Outdoors with Wacky & @Sam Graham on this one. I know they love it,but perlite doesn't really love them back. great video and much love for taking such good care of them doodies (what I call chikns) u can hear how happy they are!

    My chickens find lose dirt under a bush , tree or some times under the front porch. They are covered in dust after they are done.The soil is made of a clay where I live. The is also little rocks in it

    Peat moss dust: causes respitory issues for all birds
    Perlite: literally just toxic to ingest and those chickens are for sure eating it.

    Peat moss also contains natural iodine, which acts as an antibiotic and antifungal. I use it in my plant propagations.

    actually works off dander, helps by being more abrasive, and is uniformly sized*!!
    (maybe add a lil diatomaceous earth*)

    Since perlite is volcanic glass, I wouldn't be comfortable adding it to the bath. I like a bit of fireplace ash made from clean wood and some diatomaceous earth. The concrete mixing bin is perfect. I have limited space so I put mine in a doggy tent to keep it dry.

    Do not use pearlite like that. It is basically glass and is dangerous because it breaks down and will get inhaled by your chickens. What goes into lungs never comes out. That goes for all animals including humans .

    Please use coco coir instead of peat moss. Peat moss harvesting is incredibly harmful to the environment. Coco coir is identical in its properties compared to peat moss but it isn’t as acid as peat moss is.

      I’ve looked into coco it’s not identical. Has similar properties. It would probably be suitable for chickens. It may be more “sustainable” but takes significantly more resources to create and ship around the globe.

    Might I suggest trying something other than peat moss? Industrial Peat Moss harvesting of destroys peat bogs which are extremely important biomes for biodiversity and to lock away carbon

    Chickens have what is called a uropygial gland or preen gland. They use the oils secreted from that gland to waterproof their feathers and to keep their beaks and feet soft. As for the dust bath? That is to make their feathers less habitable to pests. Chickens can and will make their own dust baths, but you can encourage it to help keep your chickens pest free.
