WHY I FELL IN LOVE WITH LAND ROVER. StoryTime with Andrew St Pierre White

  • My first ever ride in a 4WD as in a Land Rover Series-2, 109 in Botswana. And my second in a SWB a week later. This served as my introduction to 4wd and began my love affair with Land Rovers. Much later, in 1987, once I had my own Range Rover, I took one of the most memorable trips ever, through the wilds of the Kalahari. But this was no ordinary trip. Me in my Range Rover, and a friend in his, teamed up with Tony and a 1956 Series-2A Land Rover. Breakdowns became not only regular but comical.

Hi Andrew. Great story really enjoyed it. When my sister and i were at varsity my father took us to Chobe and vic falls from Cape Town in 1987 in a Cortina stationwagon with a trailer we built ourselves and finished the night before we left! We went through a total of 9 of those road blocks on the main road in Botswana!! Every bag, every box fully unpacked!! We stayed with friends in Francistown overnight and when leaving the town South bound we encountered a roadblock going North with trucks, buses, cars you name it lining up for about 1.5km long, we measured it! We felt so sorry for those travelers, they must have been there for hours and hours!! I concur with you in that the soldiers manning the roadblocks were very polite and respectful to us and our goods! It was an unforgettable experience and not once did we get stuck in the thick sand in Chobe with the Cortina, my father was a good driver! Thank you for your stories, brings back great memories.

Great story Andrew... On the subject of broken Landrovers keeping going a friend of mine was a mechanic back in the 60's and 70's for a company that used to equip 109's for safari use. They would be kitted out in the UK and then driven out to Africa. At the end of their tour of duty they would often be driven back to the UK to be sold on. One such vehicle (a 109 series 2A with the six cylinder petrol engine) arrived one day and the driver who had brought it back noted that it was " a bit down on power". on investigation they found that at some time it had obviously suffered damage to a piston or Con Rod because that piston / con rod assembly was completely missing and the main bearing journal had a piece of inner tube wrapped round it held in place with jubilee clips to keep the oil pressure from leaking out, the spark plug had been closed up so there was no spark in the bore to ignite the oil vapour. That old vehicle had plodded back from Africa missing one 6th of its critical components without complaint! These days a modern vehicle complains that it can't keep going if the windscreen washer bottle gets low on fluid!

It’s actually tragic what happened to Land Rover as a 4x4 brand. None of their modern cars touches their older line up off road. The defender is dead now as well. Hopefully the new one is what the old one was, but more reliable.

GhettoMist if the new defender came out as the new discovery with the tdv6 or tdv8 everyone would expect it with open arms but as it is trying to take the defender place it’s not what was meant too be mistakes in the name and engine

I crossed Jordan in 1984 on an organised tour. As part of that we followed the route of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) in Land Rovers. The one I was in had to be pushed to start every time and whether true or not we were told it was one of the vehicles used to film Lawrence of Arabia. I fell in love with Land Rover at that point even thought they lack reliability, you can work on them and they are bullet proof.

great story Andrew, the first car I ever drove was at the age of 15 or 16 and it was a series 3 Land Rover. My father worked on a diamond mine on the West Coast and it was a sealed security town in other words the whole town and area for miles around was fenced so all the houses, the shop, the vehicles ect belonged to the mine 99% of vehicles were 4x4 and we learnt to drive in the dunes and I have loved LR since then

Dumela Andrew.....Great story!! I am from Botswana and 2nd generation Landy owner... my father had series ii and series iii defenders and still has his 110 pick up for the farm from 1985. 2 years ago I bought a 300tdi station wagon defender. If you look at my profile picture, that's me and a couple of friends in Makgadikgadi at Kubu Island, a few months after I got the Landy....after we took that pic it started getting a bit cold so we decided to drive down to Khama Rhino Sanctuary for proper roofs over our heads. The next day my starter motor packed up in a sandy spot, had to tow it to start it and off we went around the park, then out and made our way back home to Gaborone. Just as we left Palapye steam started bellowing from under the bonnet and a loud hissing sound with it. We checked, the radiator was fine, the car was not overheating yet it was losing water. We got loads of water and slowly made our way to town where i took it in to get sussed out. It turned out that one of core plugs at the back of the engine had been plugged with Pratley Putty or something similar by the previous owner. I am currently doing a complete overhaul, new cylinder head, radiator, turbo, clutch kit, pistons etc....with the hope of driving a headache free defender...as one of my friends likes to say "they are great machines, WHEN THEY WORK"..I love Landies though...especially the no nonsense, no electronics, ready for the bush ones...anyway...hope to bump into you in one our beautiful Parks. Ciao!

all your story's are just so interesting and so absorbing to listen to as a land rover fan having owned and rebuilt 2 series 2a's from the ground up they become alive they are all different all the quirks are different i think that's why we love them they have character you have to understand them nurture them then i had a range rover vogue and all i did was replace an alternator and had a rebuilt fuel ecu over the 12 years i had it and when i sold it my kids hated me as they loved it so did my wife then i had just plain normal cars Volvo 850 then a t5 v70 then a bloody Renault Megan what was i thinking then i got a vauxhall antara 4 wheel drive now that was better and the wife liked it so we went to get another new one and they had stopped making it just as well i was only getting it to please the wife but it was still nowhere near the range rover then down again i have now a vauxhall insignia sri tourer and my wife hates it to low down she said so this summer iam getting a jeep wrangler Rubicon 4 door with all the gizmos hopefully that will shut her up and by one of your previous reports you like them to so her goes .and yes when i get a 4x4 i don't just use it to go shopping i will use it to its full potential antara i intend to give it a 4 inch lift bigger tyres smaller wheels light bars which and bumpers front and rear and alloy wheel arches not all at once as a project and i will keep it as iam not young anymore i just want to enjoy it go green laning with a club responsibly plus me and my son can go on our own as he is getting a land rover discovery and also do some challenging off roading on private land also with a club .

Hi Andrew! Good story as always! The SII that has the nearly fallen off carb, reminds me my friends 200Tdi Disco. It was made in '92, and has been used to 2002 in the UK, when my freind bought and bring it home to Hungary. The Disco became a hunter's car. No numberplate, no MOT exam or something, just used in the hills and forests off-road, 99% in time in low range...and nearly nothing maintenance at all, just work. In 2013 I bought my 300Tdi Disco, get the workshop manuals and begin the proper maintenance etc. Then I asked my friend, when to check the valve clearance, change the timing belt on the 200Tdi..... my friend answered: never! We changed the belt on the old 200 Tdi, time for valve clearance check: all the tappets are gone, it was about 4-5mm clearance at all valves!!! .....and the engine is started and worked properly in the freezing cold or in the hot summer, doing it's job! It was noisy, little rough, but works. At the last four years it's get the basic maintenance, and works fine.....25 years old, and still works fine.....that 200Tdi Disco knows something though! ;-)

Hi Andrew, I was on your website and was a little confused. It states that the early Range Rover was in use by aid organizations because the chassis responded to overloading fairly well.
Quoting your site: Aid organisations love Cruisers first. They also like Nissan Patrols, Mercedes G’s and the Suzuki SJ is very popular. Sadly, Land Rover isn’t high on the list any more. (They used to love old Range Rovers because you couldn’t kill them)
It does sound a little odd that aid organizations would be using quite an expensive vehicle at all, and not say a much more common Series LR. Maybe the funding was there in the 70's and 80's, as is evident by the widespread usage of the upscale 100\200 Cruisers today?
    Thanks.

It's quite amazing where 'they' managed to fit that little V8. JLR won't be able to stretch any of they're new engines that long. I think the auto's mimick the planes in how they fail. Fewer failures, but catastrophic.

Clearly no Aussies with you. They would have pinched the radiator out of the Barclays truck to fix the 90.

Not that we even thought of stripping someone else's truck, I think the Barclays LR was a V8 petrol. The series-2 was a 2.25 petrol. No ways the radiator could have fitted in that narrow space.

Just as long as you know the difference between a Norwegian Blue and a block of Red Leister.
