I recently rewatched Ever After and it's sooo cute, I think Danielle is my favorite Cinderella version. She's one of the few "modern" versions of Cinderella that I feel still retains the core you mention of kindness and hard-work and I love that!
Check out Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (or Three Wishes for Cinderella). It's a Czechoslovak-German coproduction from 1974 and it's a PHENOMENON in many countries of Europe. It's another "modern" one that really stays close to the core - in my opinion even more so because it also retains a very fairy-tale feel that I felt was a bit missing from Ever After. But I may be a bit biased because it's the version I grew up with. 😅 In any case, Libuše Šafránková is a wonderful, wonderful Cinderella and I have yet to encounter anyone who saw it and didn't agree it was a great version! (Prepare for slightly different beats to the story because it's based on the German & Czech recordings of the tale, not the French one that the Disney version is based on. The especially striking difference may be that this Cinderella is a little bit more of an "action" heroine - that's actually considerably toned down from one of the Czech tales! The core is the same, though.)

I's probably enjoy it a lot if I saw it subtitled with its original language track, but the dub thei air here is quite... silly. So it is not my favorite for that reason :) I do love the actress though!
