There are a few youtubers I trust with their reviews, although none of them tend to review things like this. BigCliveDotCom, EEVBlog, Techmoan, ElectroBoom, and FactFiend are some of them.
This definitely had to have been beta. I purchased this recently. I decided to spend a day to just learn the device, within a just a few days I can’t imagine editing in final cut without it. I also had the loupdeck + and this takes it to another level. Please do an update video. I’d like to know what your thoughts are 5 months later.
Hey Linus, i know you read these so i just wanted to say stuff like this + brandon’s camera reviews are the EXACT reason i subbed to short circuit. Can’t wait to see Taran’s next review of that new system he mentioned!!
Did you even know this is the ONLY, the OOOONLY review that is honest and not sponsored by loopdeck itself!? Thank you for doing this one, people need to know
That is what happens when people design something and sell it, its not made by people that know software but by people that miss some function in hardware
God I love short Circuit for its ability to let people gush over things they're passionate about. I know nothing about things like video editing or cameras, but hearing you guys go on about them is really a ton of fun.
Taran needs more videos here. He's basically me and every post-producer I ever worked with, knowing (or trying to) the ins and outs of literally every single thing but with an amazing articulate and pro-active way of reviewing things and actually trying to make a change.
Tarans reviews are incredible. He uses the products very thoroughly and wants them to work instead of giving up and complaining. At the same time he is really honest with criticism and most things taran criticises most people wouldn't even have tried. Really nice review. Keep it up :D
This video is so into every detail. And, also providing useful feedback they could apply. Love it! Have been any improvements in the software integration during the last year? Btw, a playlist dedicated to this kind of deck devices would be really useful if possible :)
That's a great review with lots of useful information, at least it was at the time of release. However since then Loupdeck heavily updated their software and most of the complain (like it was not possible to costumise icons or all the Premiere Pro API names confusion) seems like sorted out. I would love to see an updated video review and see how well or not so well the panel control now fit your requirements.
Idk, the software is still a buggy mess. Their original UI actually worked amazing but I guess it wasn’t “sleek” or “bling” enough so they made a whole new UI probably to target streamers and gamers etc (obvious due to the Razer crossover) which actually to this day has BROKEN a ton of features. I went back to an old UI firmware and it works amazing.
Hm, for a long time I've thought this was just kind of a faffing about channel. Unbox a thing, poke around with it for a few minutes, upload video. This is the first video on this channel that I've seen that I would consider an actual review. Very extensive. Good job!
That's sort of the whole point of the channel? For ppl from Ltt to get their hands on tech they find cool but may not warrant a whole video dedicated on its main channel? It's not supposed to be " you must watch this review to be able to weigh all pros and cons and whether you should buy the product" type videos.
@@TaranVH Oh wow, the macro king himself. Even so, I hope we see you dive head-first into a product review again on either of the channels. Always an enjoyable and informative watch, even for products I have no interest in.
Taran: "I'm out of keys for macros, I need to attach more keyboards for more macros." Also Taran: "I bound an already existing macro to a single button."
From all the people on LTT team I like Taran the most. I'm sure if he made more like LTT style videos on his channel he would blow as a tech TH-camr. But ik you guys have a policy against that but still.
As Taran himself has said on his personal channel, he considers himself an artist, not a host. So he doesn't mind giving feedback on stuff related to work or art, but you probably will never find him reviewing e.g. an iPhone because they needed someone to review it.
@@peperoni_pepino I know that I have seen a lot of his channel and was just speculating and even if he wanted to make this type of content he really couldn't cz in the LTT policy they specifically say that you can't use your fame your LTT to grow your own channel. They have worked some deal and because the content is quite different that why he can operate his channel.
On a more serious note I'm so glad you actually tried the thing for a few weeks and gave feedback that has to be the most rounded test-drive and feedback you can get. Thank you

Hello 2023 here. If you're thinking about getting one now there is Alot that has changed. Some good, some the same, some breaking. (now I am exclusively an adobe user heavily Photoshop focused with some after effects and premier pro) TL;DR in advance: overall I think it's a stronger product now and should be considered but in a few scenarios it still falls flat. First the breaking. If you own an ARM product you plan on using with this, skip full stop. Currently on 22h windows 11 (the only time windows 11 is better is on ARM because windows 10 will not emulate x64 programs) In order to use in Adobe it requires a plugin, and right now, it is not being supported on Adobe. This is not loupdecks fault, but after hours of time on support and forums it seems there is no back door or any way to get this to work. I've heard M1 has a better time so maybe that's an avenue for you but look into it first. You cannot even get into creative cloud for plugins at the moment. It just says "something went wrong." Full stop no error code. Again this isn't a loupedeck issue but it will not work on ARM. Second is "what is still janky". Now this has gotten better over time but still PHENOMENALLY SLOW. On desk top where I have 128 gb of ram, have it on a M2. SSD running on a newer Ryzen 5, it's still painfully slow, sometimes locking up completely, taking minutes to unlock, and start working again, and at times borderline unusable. You have to just accept if you need to change anything on it, you are going to have to wait for a long long time. The vibration when nothing is happening, is still there, although I do not find it as annoying as Taran. And the "not able to change colors outside of preset by loupedeck is there and a really big bummer. I would love an active swatch, where on my color selector, it would save my last 9 or so used colors or even better the colors used in this session would be the absolute best. At minimum you should be able to control the colors in the preset for your most used ones but that's not even available. Just the ones given and to switch foreground and background. Now for the positive. The software (although still snail speed) is phenomenally better. Able to set up macros, able to change icons, backgrounds, color code things, the setup is still slightly confusing but much better in explaining what you can do with it. Etc. They have packs for different icons as well as able to add your own, able to download presets and plugins. It's nice and I do like it. The lag has marginally improved although is still not anything close to snappy. Overall things are better but still slow and unresponsive. So ending. Should you get it? I think a used one, if you're willing to put up with the abysmal speed, is actually worth it. I like it personally. After a good minute tho I think it's troubling that it's still having these basic issues this long down the line and find it had to put faith that things will become much better after this long, and not addressing the issues for a device this expensive
Thank you so much for this update, very useful especially for people considering the newer Loupedeck products like the Live S, because I am guessing it uses the same software as the CT (isn't it?). Could you please confirm if the color swatches issue is still persistent, as in I cannot map custom colors to the swacthes in Loupedeck? And cannot activate applications of my choice (unlike the preloaded ones from Adobe suite)?
I’d love to see this revisited with the new software! Apparently it’s better but I don’t want to have to spend the money to find out. I want to know it’s better first
Check out the Loupedeck Live or Razer Stream Controller, which are more recent siblings of the CT. Content on those will show more up-to-date software. randomfrankp actually highlights some of the changes to when he had last used the Live in his Stream Controller Video. TL;DW: They've improved a lot, but there's still much to add and change. Maybe the Streamdeck+ would be a better pick for most. I also wanted to highlight the fact that you can get nice and cheap MIDI-Controllers for these specific purposes, but that's going to be a bit more hacky and without nice screens to show whatever actions you have programmed.

"The best one I've ever used is on the Logitech Craft Keyboard, to the point where I just want to cut it off of that keyboard and just put it down here and use only that dial." Have you tried the Surface Dial? If you have, what makes the Surface Dial worse than the one on the Logitech Craft?
I have the Surface Dial. It's quite bad with customization. It's from Microsoft , so you can bind only things that Windows does such as key combine (from a list , not from what you press , so not that freedom) Scroll , back , forward , zoom etc. which is some basic things that may useless if you're familiar with basic keyboard shortcuts. It's almost useless for me because I have MX2 mouse with can do everything the dial can. The dial is very satisfy when you use it to scroll on Premier pro timeline though. In conclusion, Surface Dial has no direct API to very limited program .Therefore, logitech craft has access to the API more than the Dial

I just purchased the CT and Loupedeck has recently done a major overhaul to their software which fixes nearly every complaint mentioned in this video. The new software is responsive and you have way more editing options than in the version of software that was reviewed in this video. If you are considering purchasing the Loupedeck CT then find a newer review video of the item and see how it is a vast improvement from what was reviewed in this video. This particular video really needs to be updated because it is out-of-date.
man I'm comparing this thing to the Monogram Studio/Master Console and throughout this entire review I was thinking: "most of these complaints are software related...probably an easy fix." Thank you for confirming.
Any chance you’d make an update to this video since Loupedeck has released a big update? I want to see if it solved any of the many deal breakers you awesomely outlined in this video.
This was a great bit of content guys! I personally have abolsutely zero use for this bit of kit, but this video kept me interested, great presenter, well put together, informative without being overloading for someone like me (with zero photoshop experience), and brilliantly paced in my opinion :) - When Linus announced Short Circuit I was a bit skeptical if there was space even within LTT for another channel... but honestly, there really is and videos like this one are just great :) So glad there's a place for them :)
Thank you Taran for this honest review. Beginning 2022, it unfortunately still doesn't work (at least on Final Cut Pro) and it's still a pain to configure. For instance, even the label names that Loupedeck uses in the configuration panel are not the same as those actually used in Final Cut Pro ;-( In a nutshell, it's totally useless for professionals and far too expensive for non pros...

@@TaranVH Hey Taran! Love your macro vids! I'm not sure where to find a lot of useful info on com objs regarding photoshop, I remember spending days searching on it, but I made a script explaining how to get commands from photoshop and converting to work in ahk. First thing needed is the Script Listener plugin, which can be downloaded from adobe: helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/downloadable-plugins-and-content.html The plugin will register everything you do on photoshop and output the code to a text file in your desktop. I use the javascript output code. There's also a lot of useful info on photoshop's api in there. Next is the ahk script: github.com/Hyzalker/PSComObj/blob/master/COM%20obj%20photoshop.ahk Ctrl+1 calls an action by name, Ctrl+2 sets the brush size to whatever you choose and Ctrl+3 changes the current brush tool. In this script I pasted the code I got from the script listener plugin and explained in commentary what I changed to make it work with ahk. Following that logic you can convert pretty much any command you can do in photoshop to ahk. Btw I'm not very good at coding, so I can't explain in detail how COM objects work. I just know it works and that's enough for me xD

seems more like an alpha version.
I guess the most promising part is that most issues can be solved in software
Probably will need custom firmware, some stuff probably is locked out.
True. They could have this a great product with massive software changes.
If only this were a USB HID device (RAS syndrome) and used standard drivers (or at least open-source drivers), barring an open-source firmware.
Using electron doesn't seem like the best choice for this piece of hardware.
13 minutes of Taran ranting. I love it.

I got the loupedeck recently. Looking back at this, I am so glad the software got way better!
Did they update the flaws of Loupedeck CT? Planning to purchase this BlackFriday sale.

Thank you for doing this one, people need to know
It's always a damn shame when some neat piece of hardware comes with shit software.
it happens too often sadly.

That is what happens when people design something and sell it, its not made by people that know software but by people that miss some function in hardware

@@unculturedswine5583 Yup!
God I love short Circuit for its ability to let people gush over things they're passionate about. I know nothing about things like video editing or cameras, but hearing you guys go on about them is really a ton of fun.
The Macro Master is back at it again
Taran is the most consistent person I have ever seen. He is the consistency king.
11:21 "Only 44 actions shortcuts" ONLY!
I love our macro king
11:26 I love how coked-up he looks when he reveals that he now has more macros.
Taran seems like the type of guy to argue with his teachers or instructors in university or high school.
There is a video about taran dealing with an excel sheet. You would enjoy it.

Happy to see that he still has more than 5 keyboards on his desk
This video is so into every detail. And, also providing useful feedback they could apply. Love it!
Have been any improvements in the software integration during the last year?
Btw, a playlist dedicated to this kind of deck devices would be really useful if possible :)
That's a great review with lots of useful information, at least it was at the time of release.
However since then Loupdeck heavily updated their software and most of the complain (like it was not possible to costumise icons or all the Premiere Pro API names confusion) seems like sorted out.
I would love to see an updated video review and see how well or not so well the panel control now fit your requirements.
Damn I wished I saw this comment before deciding to not bid on one yesterday on eBay. One sold for $400
Idk, the software is still a buggy mess.
Love that Short Circuit shirt Taran is wearing, please sell a shirt like that
We all demanded one of the Techlinked shirts like this and never got it. ☹️
@@bigbundle3223 pretty sure they sold a limited edition when techlink just came out :o
Hm, for a long time I've thought this was just kind of a faffing about channel. Unbox a thing, poke around with it for a few minutes, upload video. This is the first video on this channel that I've seen that I would consider an actual review. Very extensive. Good job!
True. Check out Brandon's camera review, it's great too!
Yeah, personally enjoy this channel a lot more a loy of the time.
That's sort of the whole point of the channel? For ppl from Ltt to get their hands on tech they find cool but may not warrant a whole video dedicated on its main channel? It's not supposed to be " you must watch this review to be able to weigh all pros and cons and whether you should buy the product" type videos.
Yeah, shortcircuit is supposed to be more about first look and impressions. I dove... Too deep on this one.
@@TaranVH Oh wow, the macro king himself. Even so, I hope we see you dive head-first into a product review again on either of the channels. Always an enjoyable and informative watch, even for products I have no interest in.

From all the people on LTT team I like Taran the most. I'm sure if he made more like LTT style videos on his channel he would blow as a tech TH-camr. But ik you guys have a policy against that but still.
Well he probably won't because that's not his goal with his personal channel
As Taran himself has said on his personal channel, he considers himself an artist, not a host. So he doesn't mind giving feedback on stuff related to work or art, but you probably will never find him reviewing e.g. an iPhone because they needed someone to review it.
@@peperoni_pepino I know that I have seen a lot of his channel and was just speculating and even if he wanted to make this type of content he really couldn't cz in the LTT policy they specifically say that you can't use your fame your LTT to grow your own channel. They have worked some deal and because the content is quite different that why he can operate his channel.
Thank you for sharing. I was on my way to buy one!! Love the video makes sense!
On a more serious note I'm so glad you actually tried the thing for a few weeks and gave feedback that has to be the most rounded test-drive and feedback you can get. Thank you
This software looks like someone clued it together with jQuery
CryhmeTime if it was jQuery, it wouldn't be that fucking slow
No need to diss jQuery
@@saiverx you are right, jQuery is fine. It is people who are trying to use it on everything only because they are familiar with it. Hello 2023 here. If you're thinking about getting one now there is Alot that has changed. Some good, some the same, some breaking. (now I am exclusively an adobe user heavily Photoshop focused with some after effects and premier pro)
TL;DR in advance: overall I think it's a stronger product now and should be considered but in a few scenarios it still falls flat.
First the breaking. If you own an ARM product you plan on using with this, skip full stop. Currently on 22h windows 11 (the only time windows 11 is better is on ARM because windows 10 will not emulate x64 programs)
In order to use in Adobe it requires a plugin, and right now, it is not being supported on Adobe.
MACRO KING! Also, man, this was way worse than expected
Me: clicks on link to see the price
Also me: *IS MUCH EXPENSE*
$550 is absurd when the software is this shit.
yeah the price is waaaaay too high for what it does.
I mean Taran already has $500 worth of keyboards on his desk...
I’d love to see this revisited with the new software! Apparently it’s better but I don’t want to have to spend the money to find out. I want to know it’s better first
I've been waiting for a product like this but I guess I have to wait. Great overview of the product, this video was great.
Thank you sir for the most honest review I’ve seen! Nice to hear the real thing instead of a sponsored review.
Honestly interested on knowing just HOW fast Taran is compared to other editors with all those macros on all those keyboards
You should check out his premiere pro editing tutorial he has some good comparisons on doing editing tasks with and without macros
There's a video of him Vs ijustine on LTT
Yeah but none of those pit him against another ltt editor on a similar job. That's what I'd like to know

First honest review of this product... Well done.
Has the LoupeDeck CT gotten any better?

"The best one I've ever used is on the Logitech Craft Keyboard, to the point where I just want to cut it off of that keyboard and just put it down here and use only that dial."
Have you tried the Surface Dial? If you have, what makes the Surface Dial worse than the one on the Logitech Craft?
I guess it is something to do with the way it is used. Better feedback on the finger or so?
I have the Surface Dial. It's quite bad with customization.
It's from Microsoft , so you can bind only things that Windows does such as key combine (from a list , not from what you press , so not that freedom)
Scroll , back , forward , zoom etc. which is some basic things that may useless if you're familiar with basic keyboard shortcuts.

This particular video really needs to be updated because it is out-of-date.
man I'm comparing this thing to the Monogram Studio/Master Console and throughout this entire review I was thinking: "most of these complaints are software related...probably an easy fix." Thank you for confirming.
taran your review was actually refreshing i like it :)
I have been using it for over 7 months. And guys I have done heaps better in color grading. I think Loupedeck is great.
Any chance you’d make an update to this video since Loupedeck has released a big update? I want to see if it solved any of the many deal breakers you awesomely outlined in this video.
I was going to ask the same thing. I see that the Loupedeck software is up to Ver. 5.0.3. What was it back in April 2020?

Thank you Taran for this honest review. Beginning 2022, it unfortunately still doesn't work (at least on Final Cut Pro) and it's still a pain to configure. For instance, even the label names that Loupedeck uses in the configuration panel are not the same as those actually used in Final Cut Pro ;-( In a nutshell, it's totally useless for professionals and far too expensive for non pros...
Since there was a software update 5.0 this review needs part 2!

Btw, you can have access to photoshop's api in autohotkey using COM objects, it works with remapping actions, brushes, whatever you want!
Wait. WHAT?? you better link me to some more info on that, stat!
@@TaranVH Hey Taran! Love your macro vids!
I'm not sure where to find a lot of useful info on com objs regarding photoshop, I remember spending days searching on it, but I made a script explaining how to get commands from photoshop and converting to work in ahk.
First thing needed is the Script Listener plugin, which can be downloaded from adobe: helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/downloadable-plugins-and-content.html
The plugin will register everything you do on photoshop and output the code to a text file in your desktop. I use the javascript output code.
There's also a lot of useful info on photoshop's api in there.
Next is the ahk script: github.com/Hyzalker/PSComObj/blob/master/COM%20obj%20photoshop.ahk
Ctrl+1 calls an action by name, Ctrl+2 sets the brush size to whatever you choose and Ctrl+3 changes the current brush tool.
