I really enjoy this series. And you’re right, everything I learned about honing jnats came from your videos. Most of the techniques carried thru to other stones. We probably should acknowledge that more often. You have helped a ton of us.
Really glad to hear you're enjoying the videos! Yep, honing is honing, some techniques change from system to system but the core basics remain the same. Happy Honing!
The I*R is a lackluster stone. I use mine to prop up other stones while drying, the good Dr, led a lot of folks down a road they should have stayed off.
Agreed, do what you want, the honing police won’t care, if they do t know, lol. I honed a razor on an Escher with Koma slurry. Great shave, quick results. Anyone else play around like that?? Videos are great Keith, keep them coming. Only ones I watch, it’s just an ego show most of the time, so keep staying real and giving good info without bragging on blades, stones, and who you talk to. Wish there were more real informative videos on all subjects without the look at me undertone.
wow that stone looks a real nice example. looked like it puts a cracking polish on that blade . i am with you n that one , it don’t matter what you use or how if your getting a good shave off it and your enjoying what you do its all gravy 👍
Love it Keith. I mean, I have koma, and enjoy it, but can do without. I also jump from 1.5k to 5k, I could add a 3 k, but will it improve my results, or bring me joy?
Whether or not adding a stone to a progression will add to the end result in a tangible positive way depends a lot on who's honing, how good their skills really are, the razor in question, which 3k is chosen, and possibly other variables. Assuming the stones are Shapton Pro stones, the 1.5k is 9.8 µm and the 5k is 2.94 µm. There is no Pro 3k. So we pick from another system. If the newly found 3k is in the 5.5 µm range, then we might assume the 3k will handle 1.5k work more easily, and we are now asking less of the 5k and allowing it to really shine. Possibly, there may be a cleaner and more efficient bevel refinement realized in the long run. But not if the skills and patience aren't there. The user would also have to have the ability to discern subtle differences in edge quality.
Got a question you've probably seen a lot before, so i'm sorry if i'm just blind here. But i'm looking for a decent mostly inexpensive finisher, i'm coming from knife sharpening, so i have everything i need for bevel setting, i just don't own much of polishing stuff, the razor i use is a simple carbon, so it should be fine with any stone. I don't mind spending, i just don't want to get a 200$ dust collector.
You didn't really ask a question. I am guessing you're looking for a finishing stone recommendation though. Best thing you can do is have some edges honed on different stones to see what those finishes are like and then you'll have an idea about what to look for.
@@KeithVJohnson1 I see, thanks. Though this was the answer i was afraid of, since i'd rather avoid buying 10 stones just to find one i'd like. Either way, I appreciate the quick response.
I didn't say 'buy 10 stones' - If you have other guys hone edges for you on different stones you can get an idea of what to look for. The only person that will know what you like is you.

Hey hey Keith great series I’ve always look forward for your vids just finished a wedge with beautiful spine wear looks like a two lane highway cheers
Hey Johnny, Very cool! Yeah, those old wedges can really turn out some seriously wide bevels and spines! Happy Honing!
@@KeithVJohnson1 thanks Keith but I’ll tell ya she shaves like a dream
@@johnnyboydianno For sure, they usually do. Happy Shaves!

Pretty expensive floor tile the ILR is.

It's just honing, gotta keep it at that level.
That spine wear is so offensive that I am going to hit that like button.
Muahahahahaha..... I can hear the honing-police sirens off in the distance!
water brought that stone alive. what a beauty.
Well, it is a water stone after all.. lol. Happy Honing!
Sweet video and sweet stone! Lately, it feels like there is more time spent dissecting bevel photos than actual honing.
Cheers
Yeah, it's been like that for a long time. It's funny and sad at the same time.

@@KeithVJohnson1 fair enough, i didn't even think of having others hone for me. Thanks for the tip.
i really dont get why there is so much hate and drama around frigging shaving. what the hell.
I think the drama queens need more fiber in their diet.
@@KeithVJohnson1 i learned a lot from your videos i therefore have been spared the forum drama. i thank you sir!
Good deal, happy honing!
