Well, this is the next to last video of the series, as I worked on it I am doubting the wisdom of doing the "minor" allies as this video took a long time and was very difficult for two reasons. First, apparently cameras were a rare sight in these countries because clips and even photos were HARD to find. Normally when I can't find visuals for a specific thing in a video I'll do my best but I'm alright with some holes as long as the basis of the visuals are accurate to the topic, but on this one in the first draft I had next to nothing and it makes me worried about the allied countries. But second, this video became tedious around country two, with similar stories across the board and it makes me worry about the Allies video because I don't want it to just be "Shermans/British tanks 2 The Video". Yes, there are some examples of domestic production in places like Canada, but I don't want to have another one that is a big repeat like this one so I may merge the conclusion video with the Minor Allies video depending on how it begins to form as I work on it. Anyways hope you all like it. Sorry about the bamboozle with Finland, but it really didn't fit in here by definition and didn't want to lump it into a place it didn't belong. I'm sure they will be covered one day.
Hope the situation wherever you are is okay and that you all are staying safe and I'll see you all with another one soon.
Also happy Hitler's birthday everybody.. and actually it's mine too.. really bad luck.. I'm 25 ._.

Not sure if it comes across, but I'm rather proud of most of the footage being legitimate shots of the countries' tanks being talked about. I'm not sure if there was a shortage of cameras in the Eastern Axis nations, or if they didn't have the same tank footage propaganda boner as Germany at the time, bit either way it was quite a dig to find what I did for all countries involved. So for the most you are seeing the actual vehicles of the nations I'm talking about crewed by men from that place. Even the Hingarian tigers which I was really suprised to find. The worst footage to time ratio is Croatia, with only that terribly grainy footage of the R35 or whatever French tank that was. Anyways, hope you like the video and thanks for letting me indulge myself with this here comment. I promise all the clips of what looks like German troops are not and they're from the countries mentioned. Ironically, standardization on infantry equipment (sans rifles) was actually pretty good, so they look German, but they're from Slovakia, Hungary etc. Yeet yeet homie and a yeet yeet back.

There's the old joke about the Hungarian ambassador handing declaration of war to the US Secretary of State Cordell Hull:
Hull: "Why would the Republic of Hungary declare war against us?"
Ambassador: "We are a kingdom not a republic."
    Hull: "Your king approved this?"
Ambassador: "We have no king, we are ruled by a regent, Admiral Horthy."
Hull: "You are ruled by your navy? How big is it?"
Ambassador: "We have no navy, we are a landlocked country."
Hull: "So why do you want to fight us, do you have territorial claim against the USA?"
Ambassador: "We have no claim against you, only against Romania."
Hull: "Are you also declaring war on Romania?"
Ambassador: "No, Romania is our ally."

Great story there, Hungary wanted to manufacture Panthers, but first the Germans refused it, than they wanted a king's randsome per unit built, so the Hungarians started to build their own version of it from scratch. It was never finished, because the factory was bombed in '44. Realisticly it didn't have a chance, they were working on the first iron modell of the tank at the time, so there was no way to finish it.

The Romanian king did not side with communists. Romania's foreign policy plan for the entirety of the war was: "We help the Germans destroy communism forever, then, when they're weakened, we switch sides and help Churchill crush the nazi scum". The destruction of Germany was always the end goal for Romania.

      @cristienache739 4 ปีที่แล้ว +283

It's more complicated than that. Since at that point the war was going horribly for Germany, Romania wanted to switch sides however the US and the UK told the king that if such agreement is to take place it must be made with the Soviets. So Romania signed an armistice with the USSR and joined the war against Germany.

Most of the Minor Axis Allies' core forces consisted out of LT vz. 35s or french tanks, both of which are arguably equal to or upgades over the T-26. It's literally just an upgrade for the Italian tankettes and couple german Panzer Is (the Germans actually gave away only very few Panzer Is and ran out of them when their allies demanded more of them).
So yeah...generally, a T-26 wouldn't have done the trick. Besides, they were fully capable of fighting T-26s with their own tanks or even with the Anti-Tank rifles that had remained their primary AT weapons for most of the war.
Nah, it was the filthy T-34s and KV-1s as well as the sheer amount of Soviet BTs, T-26s and Zis guns.

@@sebastiangorka200 Hungary fielded around 130-150 tankettes at most of their over 1.000 vehicles strong armoured force.
Bulgaria fielded around 30 (having thrice that number just in Panzer IV).
I don't think the Slovaks fielded any tankettes at all. In Czechoslovak OOBs, only about 70 tankettes show up and I'm not sure where those ended up. Most accounts of the Slovak armoured forces only mention LT vz. 35s and LT vz. 40s.
Well, that's a different upgrade from the one referred to in the vid so I apologize for not catching that.
Indeed, any tank is better than no tank. Going from a rifle to an armoured, self propelled platform with a cannon is always great.

    • @PotentialHistory
      @PotentialHistory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +408

To be fair to them, they were really set up to fail. Whether the Germans realized it or not, the position on the flanks was a poorly staffed weak like with minimal AT gear and no matter how they tried to hide in that fact, it was painfully obvious to the Sovoets that was the case and handed them a golden opportunity. If you had German units there instead equipped the same way they would have folded all the same. Another interesting fact is that at first the Hungarians were right next to the Romanians but the two forces began fighting each other so the line had to be reorganized with the Italians positioned in between them to keep the peace. The Axis was a textbook lesson on how not to gather and run a coalition, that is made look so much more worse when you compare it to the allied coalition that worked together about as well as any has in history, even with the huge political divides between east and west during the conflict.

This statement needs to apply for ANY production especially mass production. In current times, it takes a car company and all its assets about 4-6 years to develop a new car model. it takes 6 months to make a single CPU and up to 10 years to develop one. People who've never looked into industry and it's processes don't understand this when they compare hard stats and we're all just taking advantage of the economy of scale someone else already figured out for us.

Hungary is interesting because many military leaders noted the importance of tanks very early. Under the guise of developping support vehicles for police, in 1928 the organizational requirements for an armoured battallion were laid down. The first indogenous designs called V-3 and V-4 were developped and tested in the early 30s. Tank crew and officer training begun in 1934.
A notabld person to mention here is Miklós Strausser, an Hungarian engineer living in London who through has work had lot of insight into tank design and later worked at the Weiss Works in Budapest, which to give you an idea was the second largers industrial site in Austria-Hungary after Skoda so there were some, so at least some of the industrial base was present, the problem was rather lack of funds and resources.

Exactly, the main issue with Hungary was always that after Trianon, the mineral resources of the country were heavily lacking, which forced tons of factories to be closed and for the main production to be focused on agriculture instead. Hungary stayed reliant on imports of steel and other irons. The time between 1948 and 1956 also proves how inefficient steel production was.

However there are those neo-fascists (not lying) who support LSNS, led by Kotleba. Who see them as a proud liberating front from both Czechs and Hungarians (even though they lost to the Hungarians, twice) who fought for slovak interests. Whereas in reality they were nothing more than a Nazi German pseudo state.

Later, further 2 divisions were formed from Croats with Germans as COs and NCOs (373 and 392). They only saw action against partisans and were still part of Wehrmacht not NDH forces. This is why people are confusing 369th Regiment at Stalingrad with 369th Divisions. On Stalingrad flanks there was also Fast Brigade made up from Croatians but as part of Italian Army. Spain was neutral, but it was slightly ahead of its time right after Civil War ended and while Verdeja eventually dragged on plus it was basically last training ground for Italy, Germany and USSR before it would be too late to make any big changes because of the beginning of WWII. Tipo 37 and Verdeja might not seem like much, but they were result of analysed experience of using both early Panzers and soviet T-26's, tanks that would make up the majority of tank forces until 1942. Spain wouldn't be able to take part in WWII as any sane country, but they could have provided valuable trading partner who wouldn't be against receiving payments in older tanks and planes as well as serving as "outsourced" developement site just like Sweden did. Who knows what Félix Verdeja Bardules could have done, if he was allowed to study german and soviet vehicles on time and was sponsored by Axis to help developement.

Germans: **exchanging sheepish glances** "Uh, we can't actually spare any. See we gotta barter it to the Swedes for that sweet iron ore cuz they don't have other sources either and make synthetic oil out of it and..."

If we join the allied side in 39, that just means romania fucks us up the arse.
Maybe if Romania stayed put, Poland Hungary and Yugoslavia combined could have done aomething against germany, especially if Bohemia could be liberated in a suprise attack, and the bulk of polish forces retreated in good order behind the Tatras.
Still, the best that could be hoped for in such a scenario is to hold the mountain passes long enough for the French to get off their arse..

Well, our conversions were rather... inappropriate, for lack of a better word, as we didn't have good cannons, and the Resita 75mm, while extremely competent, came too late.
The Maresal prototypes, while not had designs, never actually left the prototype stage. They did, however, inspire the Hetzer.
The fact that Romania was never an industrial power (up until the establishment of communism) really hurt us back then, and nowadays, too, our industry is pretty much inexistent.
Combine that with inadequate training for the infantry and you're left with a really lackluster military. While big, it can't really keep up with it's allies (Germany, Hungary), nor with it's enemies (USSR, USA, UK etc.).
We DID a relatively competent airforce, our aces shooting down many soviet aircraft and a not insignificant number of American aircraft, to the point that P-38 Lightnings stopped operations over Romanian skies following the incidents of June 10th 1944.
