That's why we need to teach women not to play the harlot and find a stable relationship before they give away something that important. There is an extreme regressive bias in the SCOTUS right now given the presence of very unprofessional theopolitical stooges, sadly. Roe v Wade was established 7 to 2 as PRECIDENT for a middle ground handling on The People's right over privacy of their bodily autonomy (Interpretation of 14th amendment with 1-5th amendments, and 10th amendment) and the States' right to control its populace (Interpretation of 10th amendment). To appease the less hypocritical conservatives at the time, Roe v Wade even made it ILLEGAL for California, New York, Hawaii, and (yes) Alaska keep their laws that legalized ANY abortions at ANY stage as a sacredly private decision and unoppressed right between doctor and pregnant patient.

Well, not really, because you can only practice it if society maintains a net of institutions to support it and if you find doctors who perform it. That said, I wanted to scream listening to Kathryn Kolbert repeatedly emphasize the view that, essentially, "we just gotta get out and vote!," without even so much as an acknowledgment to the sweeping legislature over the past few years making it harder for People of Color to vote in so many places throughout the country--the very places republicans tend to hold post. If it were so simple, we wouldn't be here. It's an infantilizing position, that, if only women and their allies would vote better, we'd be ok. FALSE! This is by design! Women of Color are of the most likely groups to vote in all elections, but our votes are often made to count for less by gerrymandering and other anti-democratic policies that have become features of our government. Not to mention, Democrats have the majority across the board right now and STILL we would be surprised if they actually stepped up and did something because so frequently they have claimed tied hands in moments were swift action was needed. What we need is politicians that are actually beholden to The People, not the corporations. We need to restore a functional democracy before we can take a blaming stance devoid of all nuance against the population: "just vote and you won't be harmed anymore." We can't wait 5 decades for our human rights. This will require direct action, people in the streets beholding our corrupt politicians to uphold our rights. No Justice, No Peace✊

I say "his" because gender is known from conception. Science, we know it now. I was the result of rape; I love my life and mom. She wouldn't harm me. My Mother of 5 made sure she would give birth at a hospital that would save her life over the life of the fetus she was carrying because she couldn’t take the chance of loosing her life making her other already born preschoolers motherless. That was in the 1950’s- 1960’s. The thought of leaving no one to care for her other 3-5 children was unthinkable. She was one of the lucky ones because being a very small woman she was capable of giving birth to 10 pounders. Her Mother also a petite woman almost lost her life with each of the 3 she had and was told by her MD that if she became pregnant again would most likely lose potentially both her life and the life of her baby. Back in the early 1900’s there were hormones to prevent a pregnancy but with soo many horrific side effects like passing out she struggled till after menopause. How can we possibly go backwards over the life of women in this country. Maybe we should be looking at better ways to prevent men from being fertile??? Maybe cut their penises off. If men are soo opposed to abortion they should be given the ability to become pregnant and carry a fetus to full term without the access to contraceptives like the plan b pill. We would really b able to see and understand their thinking.

    • @shamuscrawford

No States cannot make a rule that violates the United States Constitution, this decision simply means that the constitution does not guarantee any right to abortion and therefore gives this decision back to state jurisdictions to decide based on the views of their electorate what the policy should be. The only reason why this debate has become so politicized is because of the overreach of the Roe v. Wade decision, it's not the Supreme court's job to compel States in any unilateral way based on flimsy arguments that are not even agreed upon by the Judges. In the Casey v. Planned Parenthood case Roe was upheld by a plurality of votes but the theory upon which Abortion was founded in the constitution was not agreed upon by the justices who voted to uphold Roe, some believed it was the first amendment others the fourth and still others the fourteenth and therefore its precedence rested on very shaky ground.

Remember: this issue is NOT only about cis women. Covering it as such is blatantly false and puts trans people in jeopardy. Transgender people with uteruses (who can be any gender) are MORE at risk here. They have higher rates of sexual assault, are more likely to need an abortion because of economic standing or medical concerns, may be forced to temporarily detransition while pregnant if taking testosterone, and are likely even in the current system to be denied care or experience bigotry while attempting to access care because of their transgender status.
We cannot secure reproductive rights to all if we don't advocate for those who are the most vulnerable. Abortion is not a women's right, it is a human right. Ureruses do not dictate gender.

Even in states that support the right to abortion, trans people are likely to be denied care by medical professionals or insurance companies purely based on being transgender.

Although there may be birth control for pets, it's hard to control them when a female is in heat. Whereas humans can take birth control measures, as long as they are available. But religious fanatics are going to try and ban contraception also; there is some indication that some red states will try to charge women that take the "morning after" pill with murder. This country has gone mad.

Justice Alito refers to the 14th amendment but he ignored the 9th amendment in the Bill of Rights.

Cool country you got there America. See you're going backwards and slipping into theocracy along with oligarchy. So, when will slavery be legal again? Glad I got out 3 years ago. Love from Canada.

This is progress forward. Europe is less barbaric and limits abortion to 15 weeks. This is a step away from barbarism of dismembering full term babies and moving toward more restrictive laws the rest of the civilized world already has.

What about the human beings in those wombs. If a woman does not want to become pregnant with a human being then she has numerous ways to prevent being impregnated. Abstaining from sexual intercourse is the easiest and most effective.

People have sex for pleasure and not procreation all the time and Just a reminder…. Most of these laws do not have exceptions for rape or incest… so not a great argument on its face

This argument assumes there are no men involved.
The fetus has no agency separate from it's host.

We care for those too. Just because we care for them doesn't mean we can't also care for babies.

Democracy Now better get its shit together and start getting angry. A fresh face wouldn't hurt either. Distanced, disengaged reporting like this is part of the trend that has landed us in this situation.

Yes, yes. Get angry. Act a fool and be destructive and emotional right before the midterms so all the libertarians and independents can be warned by your crazy actions to stay far, far away from voting D.
