Blake i just used your video to try to fix mine and it freakin worked!!! Bro this video was really helpful thank you so much! My psp had the plastic black piece i removed it and crazy thing lol i have the same oil you used in the video! This is great thanks again man!
My PSP works perfectly still but I worry about it long term. Your video came up while searching for maintenance steps and I’m glad it did! Will certainly be ordering from your site next paycheck!
Mid Feb 2024, found my old psp 2001 which has been shoved in a drawer since 2008 when it started screeching. Plugged it in and it was still screaming so l looked up fix and followed his instructions. After less than 5 minutes worth of time it works perfect less than the need for a new battery. Thanks for the great tutorial, simple and to the point, worked like a charm.
MY GUY. I was about to take apart my new Hatsune Miku 3000 to do this repair to my chagrin, and this, THIS IS NEXT LEVEL. No disassembly required. Top notch!
@@Chan_Prado I did consider that, I have treadmill lubricant I could use... But it is very viscous and applying it blindly like this I was worried it would get in to other parts.
WD-40 isn't a long-term lubricant! Beware... I'm a PC technician and I've used WD-40 before to fix a stuck Fan. It came back weeks later with the same problem. Upon further research I learned WD-40 loses it's lubricant properties extremely fast, so it's highly recommended to use Oil or some sort of grease for lubrication.
My psp went from making horrible squealing noises to whisper quiet after doing this. I really thought I was gonna have to tear it apart, but this saved it!
This method is perfect. I seen other people on here literally dissemble the entire psp just to grease up a gear. I'll be taking your route if my psp ever begins to make this noise.
Worked like a charm. Thank you. Took only about 5 minutes. I removed the tape with some fine tip tweezers, filled a small cup with WD-40, then dipped a Q-Tip into the WD-40 and spread around the motor.
Your powers are out of this world. My 3000 has been like this for about 4 years now making it extremely annoying and unplayable and hate seeing stored away. You're a life saver
This is the most helpful video for the 2000 psp. Every video has it being taken apart and I don't really want to do that. My silver one was making that god awful sound and it has the black tape cover you mentioned. With a pair of small pointy plyers I pulled it up and was able to grease the wheel on the left, also the small tiny rail the laser is on and now my beautiful PSP is quiet again!
This worked really well, my PSP went from worryingly screeching to quietly making zipping sounds (I hadn't used my PSP in years, so I forgot what it's supposed to sound like, but wow does this sound so much healthier now!). It was pretty easy to do, too, especially with a PSP Street where you can just take the whole back panel off. I saw another guide recomend sewing machine oil, I used that instead of 3-in-1 because I don't think that's available were I live... Worked like a charm, been enjoying diving back into the Patapon trilogy!
This worked thanks. I used olive oil, obviously I don't recommend anyone doing the same lol! I found shaking the psp in different directions helped move the oil into place as well. I'm so glad the back didn't have to come off because it's got that genuine seal on.
Thank you so much, the umd was freezing/crash anytime I was nearly moving my 2004. Now I can shake it like crazy and the umd keeps running smoothly. THANK YOU !
Just wanted to say thank you for this concise, helpful video, Blake! I ended up using WD-40 as suggested in the comments. It worked perfectly after a couple of gentle applications. Now it sounds factory new. Much appreciated, y'all!
You’re life saver!! Thank you! It was really easy to follow and you explained everything perfectly clear. I had to peel the sticker with tweezers and it didn’t take too long. No more noisy sounds
WORKED! On the same colorway as you have too lol the only thing is after it still kept making the screeching still but just let the game run for a bit and eventually it stopped. So just be patient with it!
Lol, I feel so old, but I'm glad to see (in the comments) that i aint the only one going back to one of their childhood consoles. PS: I air sprayed mine. Noise is still there but to a much tolerable level, some might even say "normal" 🤷.
Wow I will have to try this. My PSP model is doing the same thing and because of this it locks up and makes the screeching sound. Thanks for the video.
Just a note: DO NOT squirt oil directly into the PSP! Squirt some on a q-tip or another swab and then use that to lube up the gears! If you squirt directly it has a decent chance of leaking into your screen and ruining it!
Thanks for the video man. Had exactly the same thing on my psp 2000 that just arrived from Japan. After several drops in the hole it sounds great again.
I think that it is the best tutorial I’ve ever watched, sounds like new (I made it with WD-40 it replaces oil very good) I also didn’t have to take of that sticker and also I added the oil only on the motor and it works perfectly👌
Definitely don't disassemble your PSP just to oil it! For those having a 2000 model like me: like mentioned in the video, there is a black plastic covering the lower part of the mechanism, precisely where it's more likely for the screech to come from. This plastic is glued to the metal parts. It's harder than a normal tape, but more flexible than a hard plastic, kind of like a photography film. This cover protrudes (it's 3D) and seems to hold the disc in place, or at least it may help, so I'm not convinced about removing it. What I did: locate the part of the black plastic that covers the circular motor; with a sharp and thin metal object, open (don't cut) this part of the tape, revealing the motor, just enough for someone else to introduce the cotton bud soaked in oil. My black plastic looks almost untouched after the procedure. I had to do it twice for the screeching to stop.
Hi Blake, i have a psp 3004 model and for a while i haven't playing it but now i decided to check it out, the psp was working but it was not recognising any UMD so i've followed your instructions and now its working perfectly thanks. I have a question tho, that protection tape that you removed i had it as well and did removed it but have you try to cover again the motor with tape or not?
Thanks for this vid! I have a question - have you seen negative affects with using that much oil on these components? For example, maybe the oil getting to other components within the PSP that it shouldn't? This video was uploaded two years ago so curious if you're still using it normally and the lubrication is still holding up with no problems. Thank you in advance!
Oil typically just gets on the disc’s casing if the excess isn’t all wiped off after getting it quiet again. The oil mostly just needs to get in the little hole of the umd motor, and if a couple tries of that doesn’t fix it then the gears at the underside need to be lubricated and checked for any debris that might have gotten stuck in them. I just fix PSP’s every day so I wouldn’t know how the long term use goes, but I haven’t heard of any long term issues with my method on TH-cam or Reddit
Yer a wizard, Blake! Added light 3-in-1 oil to the UMD motor and it worked after two tries. Didn't need to add anything to the worm gear or white wheel 👏
This is so damn strange, I decided to take a look finally at this issue I had with my EXACT SAME model and color of PSP as yours. I got it years before this but when I bought it and played a UMD it screeched at me XD Thanks! Lmaoo
Considering the laser drive is right next to the exposed part of the UMD, you should use as little oil as possible so it's not thrown onto the disc. A high-quality precision bearing oil would be better than 3-in-1 or WD-40, but maybe not worth the expense if this would be your only use for it.
It’s best to only put a little oil in the umd motor hole, since that’ll fix the vast majority of movement problems. I only ever add a little oil to the worm gear area if several attempts with just the motor don’t fully fix the movement or sounds. So this video is a bit outdated for the process that I currently use
Nobody has asked or answered this question: Is it okay to just leave it screeching if you don't mind the noise? I want to know if the noise will actually lead to any kind of damage or stop functioning if you never put any oil on it. Will the system eventually stop reading discs if this problem is left unfixed?
I am stuck, i don't want to break the plastic part inside of my psp but it's screaming in pain, how do i take the black plastic out EDIT: Nevermind i was able to pry it up with a tool and grease the gears without taking the plastic out. Thank you so much for the help!
Got what was supposed to be a brand new Vibrant Blue 3000 that sounds like this. Seller then admitted it was used. I should not have to do this but looks like I will - the “Vice City Stories” game is unplayable. How often does this method need to be applied? I’m concerned the oil may gunk up eventually. Does the sticker have to be put back in place?
You’d use this method once and you’ll be good to go for years. I’ve never had an issues after applying on hundreds of systems. Don’t put the sticker back on, since it doesn’t serve much purpose.
I recently created a website for PSP parts, systems, and custom builds:

In a similar situation myself. Just turned on my psp for the first time in about 10 years. Was this a permanent fix?
MY GUY. I was about to take apart my new Hatsune Miku 3000 to do this repair to my chagrin, and this, THIS IS NEXT LEVEL. No disassembly required. Top notch!
Used WD40 sprayed onto a q-tip like someone else in the comments suggested. Worked like a charm!
Thank you! I used your suggestion and it worked perfectly
+1 WD-40 worked great. I think oil will last longer, but at least it's easy enough to get in there to re-apply.
@@GaryGrimtooth My PSP refurb friends said that a silicone-based lubricant is even better

Can I use WD-40 Specialist Dry Lube with PTFE Lubricant instead?
Your powers are out of this world. My 3000 has been like this for about 4 years now making it extremely annoying and unplayable and hate seeing stored away. You're a life saver
This was exactly the thing I needed to get my PSP sounding like new again. Thanks! Nice and easy with no disassembly required.

this is really charming! my psp's screaching is finally stopped! thanks for your info, now I just need to think of a way to re-attach the tape!

Nice it works in my psp 3000 no more squealing sound, I just put very little oil thanks
My PSP2000 sounds like new thanks to you!
Thank you so much for the guide!
Do you suggest covering the motor back with some black tape in order to prevent dust for getting inside?
You won’t need to cover it back up, since dust/debris isn’t really an issue
Just want to say thanks!!!! Works and sounds as it should! Not a banshee screaming at me!

Great video I tried it and my system sounds like new again
thanks, the way you did it, worked perfectly for my psp
