  • At the age of twenty-seven, Martyn Lloyd-Jones left his career as a doctor to begin his new life as a preacher. Over the next five decades, his bold proclamation of the Gospel led him to become one of the most influential preachers of the 20th century. Alistair Begg shares his reflections on Lloyd-Jones’ life and beliefs, encouraging us to first preach to ourselves before preaching to others.

    It is true that taped sermons are not the same as being in the moment. But the Lord leads us to wherever we can find great sermons. JMO.

    When I became a Christian I was given a book by MLJ, Spiritual Depression as I found myself (after conversion) to be quite depressed. MLJ understood how after a spiritual high you may end up under the juniper tree hiding like Elijah. He also knew how deficient and insufficient one feels when drawing near to God. This book was my introduction to this wise man, but AB has fleshed him out for me. I love that he was attracted to anyone who was enthusiastic about God’s gift of salvation! I laughed out loud when AB told about the woman hugging MLJ on the Isle of Wight.

    I do not have words for how I am touched that God created such a man so full of clear purpose of preaching the Gospel.
    I would think this message to have hundreds of comments… for we have few men of this caliber on the face of the earth. Thank you, Alistair, for sharing about MLJ. God bless you

      The man who preceded him at Westminster used to pack the church on Friday evenings. I think it was Hudson Taylor who said that God makes the ones who make themselves available, able. I do agree that Pastor Begg has an extraordinary gift for expository preaching

      Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.
      Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
      Let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him;
      And to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

    Our pulpits are absent of 'unction', that which was the identifying mark of MLJ's preaching. Bless God for our many preacher today who give their all in great biblical exposition, and for the measure of blessings we do receive, but there is no more than that. Why have we stopped believing that God can and will descend upon us in power?
    So we content ourselves without God's presence in an intellectualized Christianity where God himself is never made our greatest desire, but rather our doctrinal purity is all we can hope for. We seek to know all about God but God himself we do not know.
    "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him." - John 14:21

    I think I prefer his sermons rather than this...
    It's never... the preacher is it?? but always.. only... Christ!
