It got even more "bizarre" (and freewheeling) when Johnny Carson became the host of the LIVE daytime edition on ABC from 1957 through '62 {the title became "WHO DO YOU TRUST?" in the summer of '58}. Several examples of his tenure exist.
I’m a couple of years too late on this one but speaking of the crocodile in the tree I would most likely guess it was a Leopard/jaguar that dragged him up there.
Originally, the Frigidaire division of General Motors was the show's full-time sponsor when it premiered in January 1956 {replacing "MY FAVORITE HUSBAND"}; Ed Reimers was Edgar's announcer during the first season. Then, Liggett & Myers (L&M) became the alternate sponsor that summer, and Bob LeMond took over as announcer. In January 1957, Frigidaire ended their sponsorship, and L&M became the sole sponsor for the last three months of the series. Yes, some of Edgar's jokes were scripted beforehand [Marty Ragaway and Seaman Jacobs provided them], and was told a few things about the backgrounds of the contestants- but, like Groucho on "YOU BET YOUR LIFE", he didn't actually meet them until they were introduced on camera.
$100 in 1956 is worth $1,127.74 today

At 5:45 notice a very young Angie Dickinson puffing away on an L&M cigarette.
If she hadn't smiled I wouldn't have recognized her.
As seen on Tuesdays at 10:30pm(et) {following "THE $64,000 QUESTION"}.
My goodness they lived the van life before it became popular. Lol.
Aww that was nice to let the couple leave with $100.

Why?
@@witherblaze they carry their prey into trees so no other predators can steal it, and they do hunt crocodiles.

@@johnjordan6032 Thanks for that interesting info.
$100 in '56: 2,000 momentarily
In today's world she would never be able to maintain the house on the salary of a cosmetic counter saleswoman.
Interesting how this is scripted. L&M commercials are a hoot. 1957.

Bess Myerson speaks for Frigidaire.
@@fromthesidelines yes! @25:07 “modern” washer dryer. Bess was really a very nice person, with beauty and talent.
Frigidaire thought they could make a "Betty Furness" out of Bess by having her deliver their commercials.
