Thank you for giving it straight with the amazing explanations regarding the new Z. Really appreciate that kind of discussion. The back and forth dialogue brings out details you would never be able to get from a typical review.
Best part of the podcast. I found it interesting that there were a few direct contradictions of what SavageGeese had to say, who I consider to be a straight shooter as well.
I've wanted a Z for as long as I can remember, my dad owned a 260z in college before he missed third racing a porsche and all of the engine valves floated their way to heaven. one day I hope I can buy him one
I was going to bring this up as the “hot/muscle van.” I don’t recall one from the US manufacturers, though Ford Offered E-series with heavy duty specs… 250 or 350 with the larger displacement v8 to match. I can’t be sure as I was a kid and my uncle had them as part of his contracting company. They don’t compete with the R class at all in terms of performance though.
The diesel is a Nissan LD28 engine, the difference in stroke makes for a 3.1l. A japanese parts manufacturer, OS Giken, built a twin cam 4 valve head for the L-series, the TC24B1. People get over 130hp/litre of displacement. And the sound...
I haven't seen any other press videos note the issues with the Z discussed in this episode. And @14:10 Cammisa nails why the BMW/Toyota partnership was such a good move. Toyota gave us a 52k Supra without up charging for all the R&D $$ that went into developing the BMW components (i.e., the end result is that the Supra doesn't have to go into "limp mode" like the Z, as Cammisa describes). Plus, Toyota did their own reliability testing on the B58. Such a win for Supra owners.
It absolutely helps when your Toyota and have almost unlimited money and can just toss it at BMW to suss out nearly all the quirks. Thankfully nearly all the gripes Jason mentioned are the results of tuning and tires and can probably be resolved in the aftermarket easily enough. There is a fuse that can be pulled as well to disable the nanny systems in the Q50/60 so wouldn’t be surprised if the Z has one as well.
I agree with Jason regarding tires. I'd love to try Michelin's current Pilot Sport lineup, but they don't make any in my size. So Bridgestone RE-71R it is.
@@jacksparrow5281 For you you should actually be able to find a Michelin Pilot Sport (4/4S/5) in your size or close enough that would do really well. The RE-71R is too extreme to daily drive on a middleweight car like the 370Z. I've got an old Miata so tire wear is less of an issue.
Having had an episode on my ND Miata with the factory Bridgestone S001 tires, I will agree. They’re either on or off with no progression of what the limit is. I’m on PS4S now with coilovers and an “enthusiast” alignment and the difference is incredible. Regarding RE-71R’s, I’ve had those on my old Mk5 GTI and as an autox setup for the ND. Unfortunately they’re not made anymore and the closest successor are the RT-660’s. Yes, they are coming out with the RE-71RS, but it’s a different performing tire from what I’ve seen. Any 200TW tire is going to be very loud, ride harder, and wear faster and not be as good in the rain as the Conti Extreme Contact Sport and Michelin PS4S. The top tire in the 200TW category if money is no object are arguably the Yokohama ADVAN A052.

Light weight, modest power, affordable and just more fun to drive than the new Z. Great episode by the way.
Back in the day I owned a 280Z and a Gen 2 Supra. After raising a family and paying for the cost of 3 kids in college I decided to get back in the sports car game, and purchased a then new BRZ. After 8 years of ownership, I still consider it the only legitimate successor to the original Z car still in production. Nissan have lost their way with this car.

Hey Jason, the discussion on the Z and its steering feedback was really interesting. How does the GR86 compare? Does it suffer from the same EPAS faults as early 991s and the new Z? Really interested in a similar breakdown of the issues experienced when filming the GR86 vs Miata vs GTI video!
Derek's description of what inspired his early Z purchase (37:29) matches what I experienced multiple times. As a kid growing up in the 70s, most of the glorious 6-cylinder sounds I enjoyed emanated from numerous modified Triumphs and a few Jaguars (4.2s, mostly) in the Philly area. What matched the Z for me was a neighbor's tuned BRG TR-250. Its incredible sound continues to reverberate in my head (thankfully).
Wonder if the Z boost bump is emissions related? EPA testing I believe stops at 4k? If the bump happens right after that could be to keep the air cleanliness gods happy.
A whole episode on the Z? Good. I haven't trusted anyone else's opinion that has talked about it (except maybe Matt Farah's take). The way Nissan is managing the press rollout has been pretty shady.
14:30 This is what I watch for, no one else is willing to tell the consumer this stuff! It's not like everyone left foot brakes every day, but for those who DO want to do that, knowing that it's not really possible at all is very valuable info.

The BRZ/GR86 is "sedan based" as well. Shares quite a few components with imprezas. Is the new Z4 sharing a floor pan/suspension with anything other than the Supra? Haven't looked into that.
I think you may have a different "standard" or "threshold" of what is considered "platform sharing" compared to what most auto journalists / reviewers have. I acknowledge that the line is somewhat arbitrary, so I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong - only saying your standards are different from what is "widely accepted" (rightly or wrongly) by the rest of the automotive world. The new Z4/Supra literally use some suspension components from the M2, yet the "automotive world" (BMW, and journalists / reviewers) consider the Z4 to be different enough to the M2 to consider it a different/unique "platform" to the M2/2 Series. The M2 is considered to be "based on a sedan platform" whereas the Z4 is not. (in other words, the M2 is more similar to a 3 Series than it is to the Z4) From a developmental standpoint, I believe BMW created the Z4 main chassis from scratch, then took existing parts from the M2 and bolted them onto the "new chassis." (I believe this was to meet stiffness & weight goals) I'm 90% sure (if my memory serves me correctly), only the first gen BRZ early test mules were modified Impreza platforms. These were the cars that Subaru showed to Toyota early on the demo/developmental stages for Toyota's approval. But the actual final/production 2013 BRZs are, in similar fashion to the Z4, a new, unique chassis with existing Impreza parts bolted on to it. So "parts sharing", certainly, but not generally considered "platform sharing." That being said, so many brands/manufacturers are making such modular vehicle platforms now, that the line is super murky, like with the "Subaru Global Platform" used on the 2022 BRZ. Heck, even Porsche 911 and Cayman are now technically on the same platform, even though suspension setup & engine placement is totally different...the phrase "shared platform" is almost as vague/whatever-you-want-it-to-mean as the word "coupe" nowadays (4 doors??? lifted crossover???)
@@pkennethv I think the major comparison is with the Miata, which doesn't share any components with other Mazda's outside of maybe the engine design but not the engine itself. Yeah supra rides on BMW CLAR platform so I think we can all agree it’s riding on a shared sedan platform as well. Which isn’t a bad thing so long as the engineering work is put into it.
Regarding collectible minivans, I'm surprised you didn't mention Porsche B32. Defo one of the most interesting and probably also has the highest collector car value.
Do you guys think they modified the Z at nowat tokyo auto salon? It was drifting fine as an automatic. Maybe the ABS breaking is a manual thing? (which would be sad)
The break down on the Z’s dynamics was quite interesting. Earlier talk about made me think it feel quintessentially Nissan in tuning but it sounds quite different. Tho I wonder if I’d be able to feel the difference being a bit young in driving experiences On the question of the Electric assisted steering, the dead feeling on center would be because the car has too much assistance from the motor? Would it be possible to “turn down” that level of assistance some how?
Not effectively. If you turn down the level of assistance on an EPS system it ends up actively fighting you when you turn the wheel quickly. This is why the first gen gt350 had better feel than the refreshed version, it had a smaller EPS motor. In slides the gen1 car would prevent you from being able to turn the wheel quick enough to catch the drift. When they refreshed the car and put the bigger EPS motor on it solved the drift problem but made the steering completely dead. There is no fix for EPS.
Having written off a 370Z due to the 'shockingly instant' departure from grip of those S007 Bridgestones, I will agree that it is a dangerous choice for the new Z. Granted, I had to defeat the yaw sensor to manage it, but that's one of the first things that the drift bros will do. I bet the wire you cut is even in the same spot. The more powerful turbo engine will doubtless show an even higher propensity to let go, suddenly and violently. To add, let's say I learnt why they call the 370Z the "360Z"
At least Nissan didn't copy the front end of the original 240Z. The area under the bumper did a fine job of channeling air under the car that produced serious front end lift starting at about 70 mph.
I’m curious, why didn’t they also put the spoiler on the base sport car? Because the rear lift is such a problem that they have to limit the top speed to a low number.
Oh man, SO glad to know about the over-intrusiveness of the ECU mapping but that - - and the fact that sport-mode does not eliminate it - - has really dampened my enthusiasm for buying the Z. I own an Infiniti G37S and one thing I HATE about it is that even once the clutch is totally engaged accelerating from a stop in 1st gear the electronics will not permit full throttle. At first I could hear the pedal repeatedly hitting the stop as I rapidly depressed/released/depressed it trying to get the engine to respond but it seems limited to half, if not 1/4 throttle either in 1st gear or until a certain speed is reached. Just so profoundly annoying that that - - and the notchy gearbox - - have completely ruined my enjoyment of the car. I pray that flashing the Z's ECU or perhaps future refinements by Nissan will solve or improve this. What a damn shame that Nissan has essentially neutered what is otherwise an awesome package.
Triple Webers would make an old Z much better. The original carbs really suffered with the compromises from emission controls. Mine was a 1973 and really had that problem. Earlier cars that friends owned were better but still had some issues.
Is the GM 10spd really much better than the 8spd? Looking at the cadillac CTS-V right now because the CT5 V is much more expensive and the ATS V is more expensive in a lot of places
@@maybelive765 The 10spd is very good if sometimes temperamental in fords applications, the manuals also worth it as it’s a stout gearbox, the 8spd from what I’ve heard and seen isn’t nearly as good as the ten speed in either ratio spread or shifting speed, so I’d choose between whatever has the Tremec or the 10 speed. I’d honestly say drive them to see since I’m sure the 8 speed was updated to deal with the LT4/LFT engines.
@@benburris4735 The biggest thing is also price difference. If a CTS-V is 40K cheaper than a ct4/ct5, and about the same as the ats v, no point in beating the bush

Regarding your comments about the Bose stereo around the 30:00 mark: yes the Bose stereos in Nissans has sucked for years. My dad is one of those people that continues to buy cars from the same brand for whatever reason. He owned a Rogue back around 2011 that had a Bose system and I thought it sounded terrible. Then he bought a 370Z several years later with the premium Bose sound system and I thought it sounded even worse than the crossover. I can't believe they still haven't figured it out in the new Z. I guess with Nissan struggling over the last several years, that's not something they're bothering to put resources into
Hyphen's reaction to the Matt Farah controversy is pretty much how most of his viewers reacted too, especially after he lied about it and tried to cover it up. He doesn't deserve any explanations or defending for that, especially from an actual journalist like Jason. I didn't fully understand the backstory of 240Z and 2000GT until now, that was fascinating to hear about.
Seems like the Z, besides traction control weirdness, has the same flaws as the old ones, which are easy to solve. Sway bars, better springs and dampers, and diff mounts have been essentials ever since the 350z, so I’m fine with that. It sounds like it’ll be better for grip than as a drift missile. I wish the steering was better and there’s no way you could wrench on that engine yourself though.
Honestly, some of the Z's "nanny" issues - however conflicted - are nothing the VAST majority of actual owners will encounter. Unless the car is tracked on the weekends regularly, these are basically non-issues. I for one would never beat the living crap out of the car I owned, and planned to own for some time. The last time I drifted was when there was six inches of snow on the ground.
Sounds like, just like the 370Z, the new Z DESPERATELY needs a tune. That fixes a lot of the weird rev limiter stuff, the brake pedal stuff, rev hang weirdness, etc.
I’m thinking those protection annoyances are def not just to protect you from crashing its more to protect the car from its own weak spots. Spots of the car that can’t handle the traditional vq35 and vq37 drivers. Aka no holding back vicious abuse. Sounds frustrating and purchase deterring. Mustang don’t do that as long as the manual holds together lol
The new Z is great.....and terrible. Is my takeaway. BUT it makes sense... Z's have always been in the middle of the performance spectrum. They do everything well enough to call them a sports car. Not bad, not great, just OK.

Great stuff I love these episodes
Sounds like the Supra is gapping the Z on the track too. 😆
Z Fanboys: “It’s because of the tires.”
Z was built for all around, real world driving. More comfortable and better at long trips. Can be turned into a track beast through some mods.
@@povertyspec9651 z are not GT cars. ZX, yes. Z is not. It’s just sad. I wanted this Z to be a great sports car.
@@touayaaj84 well if it's the same weight as a ZX and has turbos like a ZX then....
because of the tires is FACT
@humble harambe nah I think the WRX will probably take that crown, followed by the supra for over styling and fake vents.
Amazing as always!!!
Great job guys
Regarding collectible minivans, I'm surprised you didn't mention Porsche B32. Defo one of the most interesting and probably also has the highest collector car value.
Do you guys think they modified the Z at nowat tokyo auto salon? It was drifting fine as an automatic. Maybe the ABS breaking is a manual thing? (which would be sad)
Someone needs to send him the video of the FULL POWER Z showcase at TAS2022 that car did not perform anywhere near the way he said his car did.
The break down on the Z’s dynamics was quite interesting. Earlier talk about made me think it feel quintessentially Nissan in tuning but it sounds quite different. Tho I wonder if I’d be able to feel the difference being a bit young in driving experiences
On the question of the Electric assisted steering, the dead feeling on center would be because the car has too much assistance from the motor? Would it be possible to “turn down” that level of assistance some how?
Not effectively. If you turn down the level of assistance on an EPS system it ends up actively fighting you when you turn the wheel quickly. This is why the first gen gt350 had better feel than the refreshed version, it had a smaller EPS motor. In slides the gen1 car would prevent you from being able to turn the wheel quick enough to catch the drift. When they refreshed the car and put the bigger EPS motor on it solved the drift problem but made the steering completely dead. There is no fix for EPS.
For the 57th episode, you could do something on the 1938 Phantom Corsair which was created for Rust Heinz - heir to the Heinz Ketchup fortune.
the NA Miata is a non-interference engine anyways, so a timing belt snap is nothing but inconvenience when you're stranded.
Mini van. aka "The suburban assault vehicle" you should do a drag race video of the Odyssey, Sienna and Pacifica! So much room for activities!
At least Nissan didn't copy the front end of the original 240Z. The area under the bumper did a fine job of channeling air under the car that produced serious front end lift starting at about 70 mph.
You need to put the auto version of the Z in manual mode to do a standing burn out.
I’m curious, why didn’t they also put the spoiler on the base sport car? Because the rear lift is such a problem that they have to limit the top speed to a low number.
It's probably better that way since it's not even a full with spoiler. The spoiler on that orange one at the Tokyo auto salon looked way better.
Why don’t they put a small pop out wing for the base model z? Seems like that would solve the lift issue.
19:11 😆 I pissed my myself laughing when he said that
On Minivan, you can get the R63AMG :) Hagarty will insure that :)
Is the GM 10spd really much better than the 8spd? Looking at the cadillac CTS-V right now because the CT5 V is much more expensive and the ATS V is more expensive in a lot of places
Its broadly related to Ford's 10R80 if that helps any.
@@benburris4735 I guess I'm more asking if the ATS-V manual, CT4-V auto, CTS-V auto or any other caddy is worth it based on the tranny/powertrain
Gents, thank you for this content. Was an avid listener before and was ecstatic to hear about the move to hagerty. This has slowly crept its way into being my favorite car podcast. So many other have become so damn boring, preachy, stale and chock full of cringey feigned social responsibility and virtue signaling. This is what we want. Just two enthusiasts nerding the fuck out. Getting more and more convinced to skip the Z and get a 2023 Supra
Please do. Enjoy the BMW and the awful looks.
@@povertyspec9651 Looks is subjective and nothing wrong with owning a bmw. The 3.0 supra itself is a fun car to drive maybe you should give it a shot.
No burnout mode in a Z, still......in 2023.🤣 Still will have to do yaw sensor bypass, fuk that
LOL hard pass...

Get the Renault Espace F1 mini van with the V10 engine. 0-62 in 2.8 s
I wonder if the power cut is there to protect the engine until the break in period is over
or maybe a special ecu program that was made for the reviewers ... Like putting the ecu is TEST MODE. I sure HOPE Nissan does not release this car in this fashion or else it will not be sold.

22:09 is EXACTLY the sound my mk7 gti makes
Regarding your comments about the Bose stereo around the 30:00 mark: yes the Bose stereos in Nissans has sucked for years. My dad is one of those people that continues to buy cars from the same brand for whatever reason. He owned a Rogue back around 2011 that had a Bose system and I thought it sounded terrible. Then he bought a 370Z several years later with the premium Bose sound system and I thought it sounded even worse than the crossover. I can't believe they still haven't figured it out in the new Z. I guess with Nissan struggling over the last several years, that's not something they're bothering to put resources into
Considering michelin only supplies nissan in the super gt series, I find it weird that the supra got the michelins and nissan is using bridgestones.
Ah jaysus lads would ye relax, i was just after getting used to the twice a year schedule.
If Cammisa would be a lawyer he would be a very, very good one.
I would swan-dive into a channel with this much E30 content alone. Did both cars have G260's to pair with the matching diffs?
Hyphen's reaction to the Matt Farah controversy is pretty much how most of his viewers reacted too, especially after he lied about it and tried to cover it up.
He doesn't deserve any explanations or defending for that, especially from an actual journalist like Jason.
I didn't fully understand the backstory of 240Z and 2000GT until now, that was fascinating to hear about.
Would love to see an episode about Yamaha’s involvement with cars.
The original Z was never meant to compete with the Supra. It was meant to go up against American V8's.
Where id Mr Tim-scott get his shirt?
Jason, would you get the brz or the Z?
Great to see hyphen Scott drinking おーいお茶 - a staple of Japanese household tea!
Don't forget the supercharged Toyota previa !

2:00 of you have PAO based oil, I think you can go a bit longer.
So in theory a tune could solve most of the z problems? Can you guys talk more about the t50 😂
The front of the new Z looks like an S2000 with too much hair gel going with a straight slick back.
@JasonCammisa: On the topic of taking abuse, how did the GR86 hold up? They (86/BRZ) seem to have a reputation for that.
good luck on an answer ...
Love it
Sounds like, just like the 370Z, the new Z DESPERATELY needs a tune. That fixes a lot of the weird rev limiter stuff, the brake pedal stuff, rev hang weirdness, etc.
Try "Revelations" JC
I’m thinking those protection annoyances are def not just to protect you from crashing its more to protect the car from its own weak spots. Spots of the car that can’t handle the traditional vq35 and vq37 drivers. Aka no holding back vicious abuse. Sounds frustrating and purchase deterring. Mustang don’t do that as long as the manual holds together lol
The new Z is great.....and terrible.
Is my takeaway.
BUT it makes sense...
Z's have always been in the middle of the performance spectrum. They do everything well enough to call them a sports car. Not bad, not great, just OK.
Z were originally meant to go up against American V8's. GTR was suppose to be Supra competition.
"When you drive a Supra, or any other BMW for that matter..."
jason has to make that spreadsheet public or something, it would serve as a great guide when shopping for used cars
6:15 $65k starting for the C8 is very different than the $51k for the Z performance.

I'm guessing the issues Jason is talking about, where the car cuts power if you so much as glance at the brake pedal, will probably be fixed when the Nismo model comes out. It'll probably be 70k, but worth it.
...what? I don't even know how to respond to that ignorance. Why should we pay 20k more for a car that works properly? There are other cars out there that will allow you to defeat the safety features. Plenty of them cost less than 70k as well.
Or you could buy a Supra, Camaro, Mustang and GT86 and have none of those issues for nearly the same price as the Z.
