Having owned my own shop for 40 years. Is now retired. Very entertaining to watch the old primitive work that used to be done. Nowadays you can just buy bar stock with acme threads already there. Metric or standard. Up to 2 inches.
I need to make that very thread for a big vice restoration I have on hold as my lathe will not cut that big, I also need to make a nut too with the same thread as both the shaft and nut are worn badly. nice work, now I know how to get a wider thread without using a very wide tool.
It is a Whitworth thread used in many hard used tools like the lathe, vices and other like minded things. If you have the machinists handbook it will give you all the info on hand grinding the tools shapes and depth, etc. Good luck. These are my favorite threads to throw on a shaft. Wide, deep and strong.
