Can a Manchester Metrolink tram beat a Northern Rail train between Altrincham and Manchester Piccadilly? We're abut to find out! David Frankal: th-cam.com/users/davidfrankal and twitter.com/DavidFrankal
Spoilers... I was convinced the train would have beaten the tram there! Wonder if it would have been different at peak times? I know the 150s aren't great, but for me they are still the 'at least they're not pacers' - used to be a treat when you got a 150 instead of a pacer from Altrincham, so mild improvement there!
That was close and fun - I didn't realise the two routes were so close in time. Good call on the walk from Piccadilly Gardens (even if Later Jen regretted it)!
Hang on! The tram goes direct, the trains has to head east to Stockport before it can head for Picc. Hardly a level playing field. But evidence that it's time to turf Metrolink off the Altrincham line and return it to trains.
The tram takes 29 minutes Altrincham - Piccadilly vs the 24 minutes the train used to take vs conversion to metrolink For only 5 minutes longer journey time, the tram is a definite upgrade on the previous rail service, three times more frequent and takes people to places they want to be. Let's not being trains back to the Altrincham line, we don't need that downgrade to service
Great video guys im from Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA and i hope to visit manchester UK and take the train to hale. My favorite UK rock singer the other paul young who was in the bands sad cafe/mike and the mechanics lived in hale until july of 2000 when he died from a heart attack at his home.😢
Hi, interesting take on tram verses train travel...I'm a southerner but have worked recently in the midlands so I am familiar with all that area you covered in the video. Whilst working there I used both forms of transport depending on where I had to be at the time. Personally I think the tram system there is brilliant... An enjoyable watch, take care Jen, Cheers, Jon B.
This was yet another very interesting and very enjoyable Vlog Jen I’m glad you won the race against that northern class 150 even tho you had to get off the tram at Piccadilly Gardens and walk the rest of the route I look forward to seeing your next Vlog wherever it decides to take you until then take care and stay safe
0:27 Interesting video. Are Piccadilly trams still supposed to go from Platform 1 & those to Bury from Platform 2? Do they only make a platform full of passengers walk to the Bury platform on Manchester United match days?
Could you post a video on Altrincham's grid-locked roads thanks to constant road works. Shame the Council has no intention of fixing the potholes that keep damaging my cars' suspension. I'm an ex-resident for a good reason.
Haha, it was edited to be a little bit closer than it actually was, I'd have most likely still won even if I didn't walk that last bit, my tram was just moving into the platforms as I was going over the bridge, and it was a couple of minutes before David arrived 😃 It was his delay into the station that let him down!
2:07 Just make up some nonsense words and say them with enthusiasm like Bazinga! or Wubba Lubba Dub Dubs! Once it catches on you can start selling merch with your new catchphrase. Shazam!
Ha ha brilliant. I thought you'd made wrong choice getting off tram. It's SO PAINFUL how slow it goes through town. Wish they would add more stops to that train from Altrincham.... Suppose people coming from Cheshire want to get to pic asap by time they've gone through Altrincham though
They are really noisy, but at least they're better than Pacers. Scotrail 156s are very noisy indeed, especially on hilly routes such as the Glasgow & South Western Line, the Stranraer Line, the West Highland Line... basically all the lines served by Class 156s. They have been replaced by electric trains on the Shotts route, but that line is relatively flat anyway.
Interesting- anywhere else in the city centre, but Piccadilly, the tram would have won! Say you are on a train approaching Altrincham and wanted to get to the Victoria. Would it be quicker to change and take the tram?

That was a very interesting race and loved the chase to Navigation Road towards the start with the music.
‘Metrolink pull a Metrolink’ the commuters of Manchester (like myself) can relate sooooo much to that statement!
It's usually waiting to change lines on Piccadilly approach and then waiting for a platform at Piccadilly that slows down the Northern trains.
Oo
Great video and loved the bit when the 150 was coming up from behind with the sound effects and music. ❤️

I'm sorting out captions as we speak - TH-cam did funny things with them - they'll be sorted very soon!
Captions now available! Appreciate it's noisy on that tram and train!
Fantastic editing! It keeps getting better and better.
That was close and fun - I didn't realise the two routes were so close in time.

Never mind Ascot, Aintree, Newmarket etc. I will be coming to Picadilly to place my bets now. Much more exciting!
I have fond memories of how the Metrolink sounds, skimming along the tracks. Thank you!
Make a video of David ranting about sprinters.
Jen, where did you get the busy bee overall from?
A brilliant video, well done for winning the race. :)
oh network rail & Piccadilly, if the pathing was there it would have been way tighter,
I want to see an airport to Trafford Centre? It could be train + tram, Tram only, Bus only, Train+Bus and Tram+bus
I came here after watching Geoff Marshall's Robroyston video. I was not expecting a David Frankal collab. How have I not heard of JenOnTheMove before?

Love this video! Great editing and music choice.
Enjoyed this and a greggs must be the best prize in all of racing

How about a race on the West Midlands Metro, between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, and walking!!!!
😀😀😀😀
Well cause that class 150 stopped after Stockport for like 4 minutes, that proves how crap 150s are!
Great fun! I would have taken the tram anyway, just because I prefer the tram. More of this sort of thing please!
Ooh close though !

If you’d have stayed on the tram, you’d have lost. That means the train is faster than the tram. You owe him a sandwich.
Can confirm, having been there when we filmed this, the tram still would have won
Could you post a video on Altrincham's grid-locked roads thanks to constant road works. Shame the Council has no intention of fixing the potholes that keep damaging my cars' suspension. I'm an ex-resident for a good reason.
Fun, tense and a dodgy outcome. Technically David win that 😆 I think you need to go for VAR. Thanks both.

Northern for the win! I love NORTHERN!!
At least you had fun(?)

Absolutely brilliant 👍
Thankyou 🙂
I see you are wearing the bees!!!! :) Fiona (my wife) has a pair of what she calls her dungabees...! I just have a t-shirt.
I was really hoping that I'd end up on one of the bee trams!
Ha ha brilliant. I thought you'd made wrong choice getting off tram. It's SO PAINFUL how slow it goes through town.

I would do anything for lunch...
But I won't do Pret.
So, Ashton to Piccadilly next time?
This is irrelevant to your trip did you used to live in Wilmslow because I recognise you
I swear this is a reupload? Why the reupload. 🤔
It's not a re-upload?
Ok 👍
Think you're thinking about the Bike vs Train race which started at Altrincham
@@Sim0nTrains True.
It was close, however. Did you cheat by coming off a stop before Piccadilly? :)
I would have still won if I stayed on, to be fair!
@@JenOnTheMove Perhaps! Hope the running didn't hurt too much!
I'm deeply offended by David's hatred to sprinters! XD

@@SteamboatWilley Very true from past experiences with sprinters and pacers
Edit: honestly I like the noise lol

Team Northern😎
Dont like him as he hates 150s
