- Sky News contributor Megyn Kelly has reacted to The View co-host Sunny Hostin, an advocate of slave reparations, discovering her ancestors were slave owners.
“It turns out her mother is white which she claims she didn’t know and she’s descended from slave owners,” Ms Kelly told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“She’s been ripping on the United States and our terrible past and she’s been demanding reparations for modern-day black Americans, many of whom had absolutely no connection whatsoever to slaves or slavery, but still they need to get paid.
“And it turns out, she’s going to have to pay out - she’s not receiving anything, she’s going to have to pay it out.
“She says she stands by her demand, she wants the reparations paid.”

I'm a white American going back to the founding of the U.S., there's no slavery in my ancestry. My lineage is northeastern U.S., my ancestors fought and died in the Union army so blacks could be freed unlike Sunny's ancestors.

There has been NO slave at all in France for more the 700 years.
But there were slaves in the French colonies, for diverse reasons. All slavery in French outside territories have been eliminated around 1791. Europe followed closely.
Most countries had slaves up to the 20th century...

Even if Sunny Hostin's family had been traced straight back to Africa there is a good chance they would have been involved in the slave trade. Slavery was legal in some countries in Africa until 1981 and is still practiced by some tribes today.

I just want to point out that Sunny's Spanish ancestors must have owned lots of slaves, because you don't completely upend your life to keep a handful of slaves.

Spain and Portugal were the largest of the European slaving nations taking more than 8 million slaves to south and central America. The UK took about 3.5 million, mainly to the Carribean and about six hundred thousand to the colonies that would become the United States, or less than 1 in 20 of the total number taken. All these slaves were sold initially by black African slavers or Arab traders who also took slaves East to the Ottomans and the Arabs - many of these slaves in the East were also white, from the caucases. The Eastern trade in the same period accounted for more than 25 million people or twice the middle passage. So... if we had reparations for slavery based on the initial theft of people and their deployment the burden of these reparations - if applied fairly - would fall mainly on African states, then Turkey, then Arab nations, then Spain and Portugal, then the UK and the US would be very far down the list. In fact, modern China has over 3.5 million slaves today according to Amnesty International, the World Slavery Index and the UN... And all of this of course just applies to the relatively brief period that modern European states were involved. The Eastern trade is more than three thousand years old and continues de facto today. So I would say to those states demanding reparations, be careful what you wish for and study your own history... or you may get a very large bill from your own people. The US bill would be tiny by comparison and has perhaps been partly paid with the lives of the 360000 white and black men who gave their lives in the civil war fighting to end slavery. And perhaps also by the sailors and marines of the Royal Navy's west Africa squadron who were the first in human history to voluntarily declare war on the trade and the practice of slavery. The last states to abolish slavery were Chad, Mauritania, Niger, Sawrahi - this century, the last in 2013... all states in Africa or the middle east. Reparations anyone?

Thomas Sowell is one of the most informative people on this subject. Another writer in the field is the historian, Simon Webb, whose books are on Kindle. He also has a channel, in which he overturns flawed claims.
In his text "The Nuer: A description of the modes of livelihood and political institutions of a Nilotic people" (first published in 1940), E.E. Evans Pritchard documented the practise, by the Nuer and the Dinka, of tribal warfare and raiding parties, substantially for enslaving their enemies, and capturing females to become wives. There was nothing shy and hidden about this, no squirming, no denial.
Part of the story of warlike interactions between the Iberian peninsula and North African states, Spain still has a number of colonial 'possessions' (Spain also has the originally Portuguese town of Olivenza [Olivença]): The Alhucemas islands, Canary islands, Ceuta (also taken from Portugal), Madeira, Mellila, Perejil island, Penon de Velez de la Gomera/Badis island, and Almeida. One ethnic group on the Canary Islands appears no longer extant. Hispanic invasion and colonisation of South America is one of the most abysmal in history, and is usually glossed over when bogus claims are made about the Falkland Islands, which a Spanish monarch 'gave away', despite non ownership.
The government of Morocco has repeatedly called for Spain to transfer the sovereignty of Ceuta and Melilla, along with uninhabited islets such as the islands of Alhucemas, Velez and the Perejil island, drawing comparisons with Spain's territorial claim to Gibraltar, which was ceded under Article 10 of the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.
Finally, a brief word for the USSR, whose vile habit of populating the Gulag (Gulag is the acronym used from 1930 for Glavnoye Upravleniye LAGerey, or Main Camp Administration for forced labour camps) is probably unsurpassed in human history. Millions of people disappeared into these monstrosities, never to be seen again.

I feel it would help us look at eachother with more complexity and not cause us to just slump into predictable positions. Your lengthy response has triggered all sorts of inquiries and further study. I remember reading about the Viking slave markets in Dublin and that many English, welsh and Irish slaves ended up as far as away as Anatolia… I seem to remember? It’s a vast and interesting subject. I really just wrote my comment out of irritation but reading your piece I feel like slavery alone should make up a significant unit in the teaching of high school history. If taught in its totality and without a political agenda as it reminds us that we have all at some time been oppressed and also oppressor. And strangely, there’s an equality in that if taken in the full sweep of time. I also appreciate your brief comment on the Falklands- that people continue to defend the Argentine claim to these islands constantly baffles me. And yes- the gulags.
