You prolly dont care but if you guys are bored like me atm you can stream all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Have been streaming with my gf for the last days =)
Sennheiser HD598Cs or HD598s + Mod Mic = $150 compared to $300+ www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/dp/B01JP436TS/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1490314213&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=sennheiser+and+modmic They offer a great sound, not surround but its such a good sound stage it allows you to hear all those faint sounds, you just loose out on directions a little, you can still hear left and right, back and front but you won't hear much of a different between those transitions.
Then they obviously wouldn't be looking at gaming headphones now would they. So its a mute issue. If your price point is $80 then your looking at a 1st party headset, like the Xbox One Stereo Headset for $70.
gaming headsets don't even touch quality wired head sets for a studio or music listening so I mean my Astros don't come close to my studio monitors or my headphones for music.
fuck no Philips shp9500(don't need a DAC only 32 ohms) + Vmoda boom pro(only one cable, takes advantage of 3.5mm and better sound quality) at a third of the price...
Hey Judnar, I actually wanted to check out a gaming headset. This video was very detailed and a great overview of two types of sound experiences. It's great you included all your friends in the video to give an objective and varied perspective on the comparison between the V-Moda M-100 and the A-50 headset. Great video, I think I'll try out the A-50 headset when I get a chance.
Great video! Glad that you had put this together with different gaming experience levels to showcase the different qualities of the headsets. Top notch!!
It still works like this because they played the same game between trying on both headphones, just each person had a different experience on a different game, its just a way to vary opinions. Its actually better because it gives a wider testing range then just one game would offer.
Having different people playing different games is not a controlled experiment, there's too many variables. If they wanted the best results, they'd have everyone play every game and compare each of their conclusions for a more accurate comparison
I use the Audio Technica ATH m50x and use peace equalizer to tune the sounds. That is what you call perfection. I then set up hotkeys to toggle between music, gaming, movie, and editing to easily switch for the perfect audio. It is better to buy a headphone that have relatively neutral audio signatures for versatility.
A really great video love the collaboration you did with getting five different opinions, you always keep things fresh and interesting for us as viewers thanks for the great content UAC!
In driving games, sound is far less important than in something like a competitive first person shooter, because you don't need to react to things around you, you only need to focus on the road in front of you.
I think a big part of why the V-Modas were not liked as much is because you connected them straight to the controller. The DAC in the DS4 controller is pretty bad, and the sounds also get compressed over the Bluetooth connection.
I define a headset as overear headphones which contain a boom mic. In my opinion, you are therefore testing a gaming oriented headset against a non-gaming oriented headset, rather than against headphones. This is a vital difference, because by definition, headphones do not have a mic, and this is one of the most important features if you wish to game with other people.
A lot of comments that the Astros were loud. Are you sure they weren't just hearing more because it was higher volume, they might be more sensitive than the V-moda and so would be louder at the same TV volume.
I have jbl home theater for ps4 pro which sounds awesome for gaming and i have sony sb450 for gaming which sounds equally good like any expensive gaming headset. It all depends on big mm driver in headset . Go for 40 or 50 mm driver headset , it will sure sound good for gaming .
Should have done a blind test, like have a listener that doesn't know which pair he's listening to, and preferably blindfolded, and another person playing the game. Also get a base comparing pair with similar size ear cups. Loads more stuff you could have done to make this test more "fair"
I have the Sennheiser RS195 wireless headphones which come with a base station and connect with an optical cable, they sound leaps and bounds better than my A50s. The good thing with these is that they support uncompressed audio.
Tyvm for the vid. I recently bought the Sony WH1000x M3 for gaming mainly because they were the only headphones I have been able to wear that sound good and don't hurt to wear after 4+ hours of use. Nearly every gaming headset I've tried has become physically painful to wear for long game sessions. The head pressure, hot ears, the sweating, and welts on the top of my head from the weight. My Sony WH1000x M3 may not sound as good as the gamer headsets they sure do sound good and don't hurt or feel uncomfortable at all.
Many of Astro's headsets are open back which provides a wider sound stage, and for that reason, a more immersive experience. If you a good pair of open back headphones, the comparison could potentially be a lot closer.
Jayee uhhhhmm no I have astros a50s for €170 and there 100% beter then tritton pro and thats also close to €170 and the build quality is really good they don't break if je use them normally and my trittons broke 3 time in a year but I was lucjy to get a new one with my warranty
V-Modas+ Boom mic with the Astro Mix Amp make the best gaming headset. You have to get the Astro Mix Amp in order to give the V modas the 7.1 surround sound effect.
You should do a round two with sennheiser HD 598 or other open-back "normal" headphones. I think that would be where non-gaming headphones would really shine.
I am a musician as well as a gamer so I use my Sennheiser HD598SE's and a RODE NT1-A as my Mic. the mic is completely overkill, but if you have a spare $200 laying around I HIGHLY recommend the Sennheiser HD598's I can hear a fly fart in Windhelm from Whiterun in Skyrim. The headphones are dope. I have also used all sorts of "gaming headsets" and I'd take my setup ANY day. more clarity and I still get the surround sound feeling.
nice video man...I always thought gaming headphones were a waste of money! I've just started going to the gym and I use my regular rockjaw alfa genus earphones...and while they're very good for regular use...they fall out all the time! Could u do a video about the best gym headphones or earphones (whichever is better) bluetooth preferably?!?!?! PLEEEASSSSE!!
As much as I like the V-Moda m100s, the Astro A50s are a pice of work, wireless over ear, customizability, great surround sound, and only $50 USD more than the m100s. I would be curious about a pt2 with people listening to FLAC files for music where the gaming scenario favors surround as music favors sound stage and balance.
I feel like audiophile grade, high quality headphones outdo any gaming headset any day. I have a pair of Audio Technica ath-m50x headphones and I have never had such high quality sound from any gaming headset, both in gaming and music.
i thought i would just have to do deal with du caller sitting in the back of my phone taking up space just for the giveaway, but I've found to be surprisingly useful and actually effective. thanks!
Id just like to point out that this hardware is out of budget for most "average consumers" anyway. I think a better test would have been sets that cost around $150 not $250, but that's just me. Keep up the great videos man. Love the energy you bring to the screen.
I have a pair of Sennheiser 598SE's with a ModMic 4.0. You will not see me changing this set up any time soon. Switched from a gaming headset to these and noticed a HUGE difference in the quality of the gaming experience. My spatial awareness went up as did the little details in the game that I wasn't hearing before. Basically, I had the exact opposite experience as these people seemed to have. Was using Logitech G35's for the record. Also a big benefit to have one set of headphones that is perfect for everything. Open backed so there is no tiring of my ear drums and the soundstage is as it should be. That makes music and movies perfect. Then I also have fantastic gaming experiences with them. On top of all that, I always get compliments on my ModMic 4.0. People are always asking me if I'm using a broadcast mic for my gaming. It's the combination of two products that stand alone as awesome whereas with most gaming headsets, the headphones and the mic are usually just meh.
I'm using Crossfade Wireless headphones hooked up to a Sound Blaster Z audio card. Nothing a little tweaking can't fix there. The main reason they noticed a difference with the A50s is because of the built-in gaming focused sound profiles, which the V-Modas clearly don't have from stock.
You can use something like an astro mixamp that has different eqs to get more attention on certain sounds with any pair of headphones. I've used mine with an audio technica m50x and 700x headphones, and they end up working quite well.
This video seems to contradict what a lot of PC gamers say. I mean what's the difference between a good pair of stereo headphones and a headset with two drivers/virtual surround? Apart from the actual sound quality of course. I think Marq hit the nail on the head when the said the main difference was between the quality of the two different headphones you were testing.
Don't buy gaming headsets. Just don't. They're terrible value. Get a quality headphone from Sennheiser, AKG, Audio-Technica, Fostex, etc. If you need a mic, you can add a modmic. Also, when comparing two headphones, make sure they're both at the same volume! Otherwise the louder one will always sound better.
I was tired of gaming headphones having crappy build quality and sound so i got my audio technica a50s and i opened them up and removed the locking mechanism, then i bought the attachable v moda pro mic, then got an adapter and now i use my a50s as a gaming headset
I mean that's kind of unfair, the Astros are attached to an AMP,while the V-moda are attached directly to the controller wich doesn't give enought power for the headphones,a more equal challenge would have been the A40's wired with the Astro Mix Amp vs the V-Moda attached to the same Mix Amp and then make the challenge
i always assumed that gaming headsets like astro's focus on the lower end such as footsteps, i've owned 2 pairs of a50's, 2 pairs of a40's, 2 pairs of steel series Siberia 840's. and its hard to beat these headsets for gaming at there price point. for example to get a decent experience you'd need a dac/amp and a dedicated mic/ mod mic. My current gaming audio setup on pc is Bayerdynamic DT770's 250 ohm, Schiit fulla 2 DAC/AMP, and a Blue Yeti Pro mic. At the end of the day for your typical gamer its a no brainer to buy a gaming headset if you are using it primarily for gaming.
I think if your into pinpointing different areas of sound, higher end headsets are for you. But the average person seeking a good stereo sound, almost any pair will do within reason.
I'm pretty sure it's because the V-moda M100 is actually quite bass heavy even though they say they are audiophile grade headphones. The Astro A50s are less boomy and have a more flat response which is what allows all of them to hear the details that were hidden before. I would still rather get a set of real audiophile headphones for much cheaper than the A50s though.
For those of you who are looking for a quality headset for cheap, i highly suggest getting the Sades-810s. They are only 25 bucks on amazon and are amazing. I recommend you get them if your on a budget, or your headset broke and your just saving up to get a new, better one :)
Did you use mixamp with vmoda?? I use vmoda crossfade with boom mic and astro mixamp. The mix amp is a game changer. I grew up with a brother who uses the astros and i can tell you that i prefer my Crossfade with mixamp.
Mmm try Beyerdynamic dt880 Pros, modmic and a good soundcard or a amp/dac. Will blow all gaming headsets away! N lol at the guy "graphics arent getting much better" go play a game from even 3yrs ago and a recent release and repeat that phrase... clearly not a gamer!
He said "graphics arent getting much better" cuz he played on console. He also said that people cant see above 30 fps but it was deleted from video. #PCMR
Goodness Ana!If you ever want to grab a bite at a food cart in Midtown Manhattan enjoy a city stroll and people watch at a park somewhere let me know. Or we can do the more cliche restaurant thing whatever you'd like
I consider my self a Gamer (PS4) . I had the Gold headphone then SkullCandy Plyr 1, Steelseriers P800. Which sound nice but was lacking in bass and loudness. Now I have the A50s. The A50s and the PS4 Pro have me so immersed now its crazy. If you have $320.00 bucks to drop on some gaming headphone go with the A50s. You wont be sorry. They will make your ears rumble. They get loud. Only thing I dont like is the wireless range. Nice Video Homie! You stay on your GRIND. Tell Wify I said whats up.
"if you don't know there's a higher quality tech version out there! you are probably gonna get along just fine with what you have" that's a typical iPhone user.
You should have tried a different pair of headphones. The M-100 has a very odd presentation and definitely could cause issues when playing FPS games where footsteps or other sounds can be used to your advantage.
Did you use a gaming amp with the regular headphones? I use an Earforce DSS amp ($15-$17 on ebay used) with my Sony MDR1000, so i get dolby 5.1 emulation. I use an Antonline mic also. I hook up my computer and game consoles to a stereo mixer and to a bluetooth wireless transmitter. One headset for 1 console and 3 computers...
"when i was in the astros, it hurt" LOL
😂
UrAvgConsumer whats your favorite video game on ps4 of all time
Mac ii
That gamer level tag beneath each person tho lol

Rain drop, drop top gonna bring my ak gonna make some kids drop
ABOE bad and bougois
Word! Lol
I'm sorry man, but that video felt like an advertisement. I guess it wasn't but it had the "real people's reactions" vibe of a lot of commercials.
+angelsson nope. Not an ad - I'll always say if there's a sponsor.
UrAvgConsumer Good to hear, man. I didn't doubt it. Still has this strange vibe to me. ;) I enjoy your videos though!
me to lol they sounded really fake lol
This was definitely misleading.
plot twist: the Astros have an external DAC and he didn't put the v-modas through an external too
An average consumer wouldn't pay for a $300 pair of gaming headphones. Would like to see a more reasonable comparison though.
Sennheiser HD598Cs or HD598s + Mod Mic = $150 compared to $300+
www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Cs-Headphone/dp/B01JP436TS/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1490314213&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=sennheiser+and+modmic

You can get a Corsair (third party) Void WIRELESS RGFRIGGINB headset for $80 from amazon right now.
gaming headsets don't even touch quality wired head sets for a studio or music listening so I mean my Astros don't come close to my studio monitors or my headphones for music.
but Ur Average Consumer would :)
"Drop Tops" i see what you did there Lol

Sennheiser 598's + (Decent quality DAC) + ModMic 5.0 = Gaming Headset
Renny what are your opinions on the 559's?
Renny Well... Open back is annoying...
fuck no
Philips shp9500(don't need a DAC only 32 ohms) + Vmoda boom pro(only one cable, takes advantage of 3.5mm and better sound quality) at a third of the price...
How much does that cost exactly?
Renny I

You should've had them all play the same game.
Reece Eats Pieces doesn't really matter since it still came to the same conclusion
It still works like this because they played the same game between trying on both headphones, just each person had a different experience on a different game, its just a way to vary opinions. Its actually better because it gives a wider testing range then just one game would offer.

Yes this is what I was trying to say.
I've commented on the A50 negatively I would say, but this will make me rethink again, thanks a lot, this is like a response to to my comments. 👍
When are you going to do a review of the new XB950N1?
Love the different view points. Great video! :)

Thanks for the video. Very helpful
how about if you use gaming headsets to listen to music in your phone
You should do one with a horror game. I feel that the horror games make use of the sounds more than the other games to instill fear and stuff
Super review thanks
raindrop drop top Cincinnati zoo made harambes heart stop

The Placebo Effect in the song it says " rain drops drop top"

Connect the regular headphoes to a mixamp, than that's fair.
Heisenberg yeah.
@Heisenberg .. makes no sense. Headphones dont come with that but game headsets do
You can't, if it doesn't already come with one.

Unless something has changed recently, Astros are the beats of gaming headsets... Overpriced, underperforming.
Beats is actually pretty fucking decent now, but still overpriced as shit, Astro is still overpriced AND shit.

nah, that headphone with a mic is a pain ....

like 80% of the people I talk to online use a inline headphone mic sound grate tbh.
The HyperX Cloud Stingers have stellar sound quality, great mic, and comfy. Plus, it is very cheap, only at $50. May as well invest in them!
i think pc gaming still has the edge over console because you can choose your dac and so the features you get for you listening experience
Thank you for doing this video
Mmm try Beyerdynamic dt880 Pros, modmic and a good soundcard or a amp/dac. Will blow all gaming headsets away!
N lol at the guy "graphics arent getting much better" go play a game from even 3yrs ago and a recent release and repeat that phrase... clearly not a gamer!
As for surround its just virtual surround you cam achieve same with soundcards and fine tune things
He said "graphics arent getting much better" cuz he played on console. He also said that people cant see above 30 fps but it was deleted from video.
#PCMR
I wouldn't use dt880's for gaming.
@@dnalekaw4699 why?
@@mmvgaming1979 No idea why I said that tbh.
It depends on what regular headphones you have. My Bose SoundLink II headphones do get me quite deep in it.
For a moment I thought someone stole your video idea. Until I realized that you just changed the thumbnail :D
I wanted to watch this but I couldn't...
Shouldn't they also be testing the microphone since that's one of the big differences between a modmic and an attached mic?
Goodness Ana!If you ever want to grab a bite at a food cart in Midtown Manhattan enjoy a city stroll and people watch at a park somewhere let me know. Or we can do the more cliche restaurant thing whatever you'd like
You need more than just two pair of headsets to test out...
"if you don't know there's a higher quality tech version out there! you are probably gonna get along just fine with what you have" that's a typical iPhone user.
its always better to know opinions of consumers who are not average
Damn! The idea of this video and quality was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Manas Deep Fiaaahhhh
You should have tried a different pair of headphones. The M-100 has a very odd presentation and definitely could cause issues when playing FPS games where footsteps or other sounds can be used to your advantage.
Did you use a gaming amp with the regular headphones? I use an Earforce DSS amp ($15-$17 on ebay used) with my Sony MDR1000, so i get dolby 5.1 emulation. I use an Antonline mic also. I hook up my computer and game consoles to a stereo mixer and to a bluetooth wireless transmitter. One headset for 1 console and 3 computers...
I believe that their hearing a difference, but I hope their reaction are not altered due to placebo effect.
"I didn't here the water drops before, look at that" .... Think about what you just said
V-MODA mic + BeatsMixr + XBOX Elite controller = high quality real nice sound
