If I remember correctly, many animators who failed to deliver on Prince of Eqypt were sent to work on Shrek as a punishment or something, ”the c-project”....And will you look at that. One of the best computer animated movies out there 😂
Something like this happened with Pocahontas and The Lion King, right? Like they put the best animators on Pocahontas and the meh ones for TLK and TLK ended up being way more successful. The crew for both TLK and Shrek wasn’t as good as the other ones (iirc) but they worked really hard to get there, and they delivered beyond what their company was asking for
flynn and rapunzel are great too! Their build of relationship is amazing, flynn found her attractive instantly cause she's pretty but you see him falling for her personality over the course of the movie. I also enjoy anna and kristoff, because it was just a friendship since she was engaged. And their relationship wasn't the focus of the movie.
While shrek is a creative subversion of fairy tails they had more leeway Most of the dusney princesses come from stories that lack so much detail as they basicly verbal legends retold over and over till some people decided to write them down in books

I love that this movie was basically Jeffery Katzenberger's (former head of animation at Disney) petty revenge on Disney for giving his rival, Bob Eizner the top job at Disney. So he modeled Farquad after Eizner and even his name is a play on 'fuckwad'
Yes, Shrek! My grandpa, who is 101 years old, absolutely loves Shrek, it's his favorite animated movie. I watch a movie with him every Sunday and every few weeks he goes "Can we watch Scrap again?" (yes, Scrap, grandpa's memory isn't the best anymore and he keeps forgetting it's Shrek, not Scrap lol. Bless him). Though his favorite character is actually Donkey. I've watched these movies so many times now I'm actually kinda sick of them but hey, they're still fun and Grandpa loves them so that's good enough for me. Looking forward to your reaction to the other Shrek movies, and yes, 3 is definitely the weakest one, but you shouldn't skip it. 4 won't make much sense if you do. The fourth one is good. Shrek 2 is absolutely amazing.
Shrek is one of those movies that did either okay or very well in the West that became so popular in my country that its quotes became a part of everyday language (like, you just say the word "layers" and pretty much everyone thinks of this movie).
There is also Shrek the Musical. They even did a professionally filmed version which was released. I am so used to the musical now that the film seems a little odd 😅
The older I get more I fell like I can relate to Shrek, it's really weird. Just the whole point about not letting people in because you think they'll judge you, it hits home
Weird recommendation, but if you like musicals, DEFINITELY check out the Broadway version of this. It’s surprisingly effective, and they did so much more with Shrek’s character than this movie really gets to address. Or if nothing else, listen to the Act 1 finale, “Who I’d Be”. I never imagined that a song from a Broadway adaptation of SHREK would be so dang emotional and make my list of best Broadway songs.
Watching you’re reaction has finally made me see and realise what that scene with lord farquaad watching rewinds of princess fiona on the mirror was about, didn’t expect that to be in a kids animation film.

I recommend the 1988 BBC version. The special effects may not have aged well, (particularly the battle between good and evil) but it's still a forgotten classic.

It's my favorite movie of all time, and I don't think anyone could beat Georgie Henley's performance, the soundtrack, and the appearance given to Aslam !!! But I am open to exploring other adaptations!

I used to have Shrek on VHS (a landmark in my town was giving away different Shrek merch prizes to kids and I was the first one to get the biggest prize you could get. Whenever Donkey said "Let's do that again" after the Welcome To Duloc song, I used to rewind it because that was my favourite part of the movie, too. I wanted to hear it again.
Seeing this in theaters was a blast, the Shrek craze really took off after this. In some ways I don’t think it’ll ever end. 😊 And lol @ your comment about Farquad’s horrendous haircut! 🤣

I am *amazed* at how well the animation holds up. DreamWorks are GODS ~~well except for Shrek 3 and some other films but~~ most of the time, their films are honestly great. Some are what I consider amongst the best films of all time.

(And who does Farquaad sorta resemble?) That was why we all thought it was funny back then, because we all resentfully blamed Disney 90's fairytale movies on Eisner too.

Several months ago, I was riding in the car with my grandma and on the radio, they played "I'm a Believer," so I was singing along, and she was surprised that I knew it. I have suggestions sir I was thinking some other Dreamworks movies like Megamind, Over the Hedge, and one of my favorite childhood Monsters vs. Aliens.
sad fact: as you can see, there were 3 bears in the beginning of the movie but if you saw them again on the 2nd scene, only the papa bear comforting the baby bear and the scene were the lord farquad is doing his "thing", on his floor was the skninned bear rug with a bow in it, the same bow that mama bear has. at the end, papa bear is dancing with somebody and not with his wife indicating that mama bear was trully gone.

sad fact: as you can see, there were 3 bears in the beginning of the movie but if you saw them again on the 2nd scene, only the papa bear comforting the baby bear and the scene were the lord farquad is doing his "thing", on his floor was the skninned bear rug with a bow in it, the same bow that mama bear has. at the end, papa bear is dancing with somebody and not with his wife indicating that mama bear was trully gone.
