I'm an American living in Germany long enough to say Farin is one of my musical Idols. His album Am Ende der Sonne is a friggin masterpiece.
Its my favorite too! If I had to hear three music albums on a deserted Island, this one made it easily to my list
Agreed. Can I also add that the unplugged Realschule concert by the die Aerzte is one of the best live concerts by any band
Oh my - "Claudia" has nothing to do with Claudia Schiffer. The Song was first released in 1984, Schiffer started her career in 1988.
Claudia hat nen Schäferhund is definitely not about Claudia Schiffer. The song is from 1983, when Schiffer was 13. She did not start modeling until 1987.
I would like to add that they also do not shy away from complex words and mostly stress proper grammar. They, especially Farin, have improved my German language skills immensely. They pull it off without seeming dorky, maybe better said, this dorky aspect is part of their persona.
Yes, they always use proper grammar except when they intentionally don't. And then it's just for the laughs. Like in "Schrei nach Liebe" there is the line "Du hast nie gelernt dich zu artikulieren" (You have never learned to articulate [your thoughts/feelings]" and in one chorus they change it to "Du hast nie gelernt dich arti-zu-kulieren" (You have never learned arti-to-culate). I think it works fine because the syllables "zu" and "ku" rhyme and because prefixes of verbs in German are sometimes split from the verb and placed somewhere else in the sentence. But they are not moved to the middle of the verb so that is the unexpected funny part. I love that line :)
It might have been mentioned but: Claudia hat 'nen Schäferhunder does NOT refer to Claudia Schiffer. The song is from 1982 when Schiffer was only 12 years old. She only was auditioned in 1987 and became famous in the 1990s, way later than the song!
Would love to see more analysis/translation videos about songs from Die Ärzte! Especially ones with cultural references/idioms/jokes/etc. that non-germans would not be able to easily translate/understand. Thanks for all of the great videos Dave!

I have a few on my chanel. Hope it is ok to mention that. The first two have poor timing for which I apologise, but the 3rd I think I finally got it right. I have found many more online. Just search them with Englisch subtitles. Many others gave done Videos as well.

DÄ is my favourite band of all time and I like to stress that it’s an important statement as I am not German and I do not live in Germany but yet the music reached me to a point where they rule my personal charts with no competition.

Die Ärzte is one of my favourite bands of all time. I’ve been listening to them since the early to mid 90s. Thank you for introducing them to a lot of other English speakers. They really deserve to be internationally recognised.
In the context of the song, "Schrei nach Liebe" should actually be translated as "Cry for Love" instead.

Cool video! I really love it how you "introduce" some people with this to one of my favorite bands out there. My personaly favorite albums by them are "Planet Punk" and "Die Ärzte" cause I like the variety and the melodic guitarwork on "Planet Punk" while on "Die Ärzte" I enjoy the moodier sound and the goth rock attitude it has. Other albums I like by them are "Das ist nicht die ganze Wahrheit...", "13", "Le Frisur" and "Die Bestie in Menschengestalt." I know for fact that many 80s Die Ärzte fans kinda stopped listening to them after the 80s cause they really hate the 90s era while I see positive sides in both oldschool Ärzte and post-80s Ärzte. Keep up the great work and who knows maybe we will get a Terrorgruppe video one day? 😁
When I first saw them in '96 they stopped the show in the middle and vowed to only continue once a certain number of bras had been thrown onto stage...

Even though Die Ärzte are petty mainstream in Germany, I'd say - which by no means is a reflection on the quality of their music! Both their old and new stuff has finesse to it, I'd say. :)

@@DefinitelyGerman das wirkt glaube ich nur so, da ein großteil der bekanntesten lieder tatsächlich von farin ist aber auf den Alben ist es immer sehr ausgeglichen um nicht zu sagen, da schreibt wirklich jeder genau ein drittel der songs. Zumindest seit den 90ern

At one time I have realized, I'm livinging longer together with BelaFarinRod than with my wife, listen to them since 1983.
Hagen played 2 years in the Band 86-88 and died 2016. Since 1993 Rodrigo Ganzales is the Bass player

Great video Dave. I got into listening to Die Ärtze not long after I started to learn German, been enjoying their music since. If you listen to them, would you be up for doing something like this for the band Madsen? They`ve been my favorite as of late

Painfully underrated channel
Very interesting! At SXSW a few years back I half-jokingly asked the German music rep if Die Ärzte would ever come to SXSW. His response was a sneer, indicating they were way too huge for that. My thought in return was "Yeah, I'll give you one hour to find another American here who even knows who they are!"
Wow, that's a bit... unkind from the rep. In my opinion, that is. Yeah, they are big, but even they admit they're only such in the German-speaking areas. Besides, from what I gather, they always retained (as per their wishes) this sort of "club band" quality to them. And they wanted to transfer that atmosphere to big stages, too. They played in Japan, from what I know, but recently also did a small club-tour everywhere but in German-speaking countries. Not that their fans didn't follow them, of course, but still. :)

I discovered them in '97 as an exchange student, I have been a huge Fan ever since. It is very lonely being probably one of very few hardcore American fans. Thanks for Promotiing them, I have tried to myself as much as possible. I have translated and subtitled a few of their Songs. Working on more soon. They are just a great feel good Band and they deserve so much more attention Internationally.
Search for "They've given me Schrott" here on TH-cam. There are a buch of their unreleased songs, some of them even in english.
@@afa1515 I have heard a few things off that Album. I love hearing Farin's English, his pronuncuation is really beautiful. In general I prefer the German original lyrics though. Bela at the very end of Alle Auf Brillen sounds really adorable too, when he is quietly chanting in his actual voice. Too cute!
@@admerin6961 Yeah the original lyrics are pretty funny too most of the time. When the were seperated during the 80s they also played in english with their two other bands ("King Kong" and "Deep Jones"). Pretty amazing music actually, sadly it wasn't working on the german market. Or luckily, as they probably wouldn't have rejoined otherwise.

I LOVE Die Arzte (sorry no umlaut on this keyboard I guess ;) They played non-stop on one of my trips to Germany in 2012, and their album Auch will always remind me of that vacation.
You should look into a video on Wizo too; not sure how well-known they actually are in Germany but in North America they had pretty significant success on the 90s punk rock scene after Fat Wreck Chords got them signed. I actually started learning German because of their song Raum der Zeit! Great band!
German here and I love wizo. Raum der zeit is one of my favorites too. Didnt know they made it to the US tho.

The lyrics are just crazy good and how that goes with the music!!! Also... Bela B was born in year of tiger and December 14th... sagittarius... that's my birthday but mine is 12 years later (dec 14) year of tiger... so happy to see there are people who appreciate and see what i see in them. They are definitely underrated in terms of the worldwide popularity.
Not sure if this is an "official member thing" but i am nearly 100% sure that Hagen was replaced way earlier then 2016 by Rod...
He died in 2016, hence the years mentioned.

On a more serious note lol it's amazing to see the amount of bands and songs that seem to be banned or indexed in Germany. I thought the US was uptight about its censorship, but it seems Germany is very strict about what they consider appropriate, especially when it comes to the youth. Is there any reason to that?

They are not very uptight. But certain topics are not suitable for children and some german Bands like to Explore these. So for me, it is expressing freedom in music and speech. But it also means, that those discussions cannot be held openly on radio for everyone to hear. And this is what the index means. No free transmission for everyone, but you can buy the songs in a store.

@@sebastiankluge9778 Hören Menschen, die kein Englisch können, nur deutsche Musik oder auch mal Englische? Also, genauso geht es andersrum. Wie viele Rammstein Fans es zb international gibt. Die Ärzte haben auch schon paar Mal in nicht deutsch sprechenden Ländern Konzerte gegeben wie Italien, Chile, Russland, Japan etc.
Man muss nicht Songgtexte immer verstehen, um die Songs&Melodien ggenießen zu können.
Und ja, das Video schauen auch Nicht Deutsche, die an der Deutschen Kulturr interesiert sind.
Vieleicht weniger Dieselabgase vom Traktor schlucken bevor man dumme Sprüche ablässt. Deutsche Vidoes, die über die Ärzte sprechen, gibt es auch wie Sand am Meer.
