Hi, James, I was only speaking of US critics holding back dance in the US, not in Europe or any other country. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Love that NDT energy and variety. Tanztheater Wuppertal is picking up the pace as the pandemic subsides. Annie-B. Parsons and Dance Umbrella group in the US creates some wonderful dances. Christy Sheffield Sanford, artist-writer

Anything that perpetuates the legacy and memory of Pina Bausch is to be applauded. I like the use of space and the elegiac tone in the piece. However, many of the dancers, although obviously competent, are not inhabiting their bodies but rather performing steps. How to make that total physical commitment remains mysterious, but I think it has to do partly with individual dancers recognizing their back and sides and being comfortable with the breath while in motion. In "Dancing Dreams" I could see how difficult it was for JoAnn Endicott to get Joy to be totally present in her body while running, that's it. The scene here of the two women running beautifully echoes that type of moment, but the head to toe feeling of the body is somehow missing. For years, I've thought about the emotional power in the Tanztheater Wuppertal experience. And I know Hannah Dennison has studied this in ways I could not because she is a dancer with a depth of experience and sensitivity in her art form.
I think the American critical resistance to Bausch's work was unconscionable and has set back various efforts at fusion for a decade. I have a creative essay I'm circulating called "The Ostinato and the Furniture or Stiffen" about the Bausch ensemble's essence. Happy to share if I wasn't too off-putting. I can tell "Dear Pina" was a labor of love and much effort. I hope the work continues to be performed. Christy
In the opening scene, I don't feel the weight on the back or a sense of the arduousness of carrying the baggage.

Thank you Christy. I found your insight very enlightening. As a relative new-comer to Pina's work, having only seen "Pina" and "Dancing Dreams" as well as segments of other works, I understand what you say. Under Pina's tutelage the dancers, their bodies, their feelings and expressions were all the same. I agree that this is a very sincere work and applaud the dancers who performed it. And, like you, I hope it continues to be performed. But I disagree that American resistance has set the art form back at all. It thrives in Europe. I'm a big fan of the Batsheva and Vertigo dance companies in Israel for example. As an American I know how juvenile, immature and ignorant my culture is compared to the world stage. I watch European films instead of American ones for that reason. As a former film teacher I deplore the American childish cartoons they call movies. Give me any Russian, German, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Polish or Spanish film any day.

View Wuppertal's incredible production of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" and one can see what's been lost.

@@jamesparker5011 I would recommend Chantal Akerman's superb film "Un jour Pina m'a demandé". Although I am a Wenders fan, I felt that his "Pina" didn't capture the strength of Bausch's work, and in fact diluted it a lot in the dance scenes located in various urban environments (which reminded me of the countless images, and now full Instagram accounts, of ballerinas photographed on the streets, and went for the aesthetic when Bausch's work goes much deeper). I downloaded "Dancing Dreams" today and look forward to watching it. There is also a documentary called "Dancing Pina", I believe, that just came out or is about to. And of course there are books.

a silly paraphrase that looks and really does not sound at all like a true work by Pina Bausch. extremely disappointing.
