I love how brainiac doesn’t start out manipulating his memories. He shows him the memories that he has suspicion in, and as doubt creeps in, he then starts changing memories slowly taking control of his mind
It’s so insidious, isn’t it?
That's how manipulation works. You start off with the real painful Memories and then alter the beliefs of what happened and then show the last real painful Memory. Then, they give you thing that you have always wanted. For Clark, it is a Family that he feels he belongs in.
Simply reopening the wounds and then starts pouring salt into them.
I love how Clark's mind is so much stronger than Brainiac originally anticipated that he has to completely change tactics. He tricks Clark into thinking that he DID win so that his guard will be let down.
@@MadameTamma Brainiac went from real memories to altered ones and then right back to the real memories and then played one more trick on Superman.
It's honestly refreshing seeing a full-blown, unabashed villain like Brainiac that actually DOES understand things like love and friendship, a desire to belong, and personal loyalty between people. Even if Brainiac doesn't embrace such feelings himself, he understands them on a deep enough level to subvert and manipulate such feelings expertly.
That's what makes him dangerous.
Well, he has admitted that he truly loves Kara as her own. He understands them because he feels them to some extent. If not, it wouldn't be possible for him to pull this off
@@ennieminymoo6675 That is a distinctly possible summation of things.
Time will tell how his characterization will inform upon these feelings and his ability to comprehend them.
Otto Apocalypse is one of the prime example of this kind of "what is done out of love goes beyond good and evil" Nietzsche type villain and I hope I see more of it.
Though Otto is a selfish villain to execute his goal of reviving his love one because he has power to do so, Braniac understand the human nature and psyche to know that humans are very fallible when it comes to emotion and the greatest driving force that fuels their action and hope is "Love" itself.
I still prefer Otto than Braniac tho. He's a selfish human who happens to have influence and willpower to execute his selfish wishes yet still understands that he's an evil being for all the misery and suffering he caused but things are already too late for him.

This is probably one of the most evil versions of Brainiac I've seen. I dig it.
I like his calm voice. It doesn't match with his actions which is cool
Giggity
I do love that this version of Brainiac isn't responding to emotions and love as if it could not understand them as concepts.
This version clearly understands that nuances and affects such feelings have on people and how to exploit them. This Brainiac is a villain that DOES understand things like love and friendship and how such things will motivate people. Even though Brainiac is not going to let such feelings get in the way of his goals.
Not understanding such things has been the, at times, laughably crippling weakness of villains like Voldemort or Emperor Palpatine.

This version of Brainiac would likely appeal to General Zod. However, I doubt that it would lead him to trust this supercomputer, as they both have their own visions and plans for new Krypton.
It's a cartoon.
Brainiac did mention that he was sealed away before krptons destruction so chances are that maybe zod gave the fella too much of an influence thus causing other kryptonions to go like yeah how about we chill on that idea or perhaps brainac was a tad too ambitious with his directives and that's why he got sealed away considering zod probably doesn't want any competition
@AutismoGames Ok and?
I wonder how they’ll do doomsday.
Yes it was indeed an animated project with a script, voice acting and animation. Could you please my fellow human being who is characterised by the ability of pattern recognition and forming conceptual ideas into sounds and drawings that we call communication, explain me the reason of such an affirmation ? @@AutismoGame
Showing Clark several alerted memories that, while clearly fake, prey on his insecurities and fears, before showing him a real bad memory between him and Lois to cement those fears as real is some…scary clever manipulation.
"And what about this one? Is this memory real Kal-el?" That was freaking cold.
It's interesting that in this universe, the black mercy is a kryptonian device that Brainiac uses to see and interact with Clark's memories as to find his vulnerability to take over his body. At first, he tries to make Superman relive past battles, but when that doesn't work, he discovered Lois and Jimmy. Brainiac used Clark's memories and doubts against him, and even manipulates Clark's memories to further weaken Clark. What really sealed Clark's fate was Brainiac's use of Clark and Lois' last conversation. It ultimately made Clark vulnerable enough for Brainiac to take over his body.
Yep, and Brainiac worked with Clark's attempts at forcing him out rather than trying to resist them.
In giving Superman a brief moment where he'd believed that he'd broken free of Brainiac's influence, it seemed like it led to Clark letting his guard down enough for Brainiac to swoop in with one well placed blitz on his mind.
@@dungeonguy88and Lois is about to risk her own life in order to save him.

0:24. The Black Mercy was originally an alien plant used by Mongul, one of Superman's enemies to trap him in his fantasies. I remember it from Justice League Unlimited.
That was a great episode. This is either a call back to that or if it exists in this universe, Brainiac made an improved digital version.
@@armi999definitely a callback, though really like how the introduction into the “fantasy.” Is to establish a foothold into someone’s mind through mental weakening and tricking the brain into believing the “old.” Life was nothing more than a daydream or a half remembered memory. And that episode is an adaptation of a fantastic comic
I’m glad they’re stretching out the black mercy, it’s been one of the best Superman stories in every piece of media

I love this Brainiac. He may be an AI, but he understands emotions. And he uses that understanding to manipulate his enemies so cunningly and viciously.

Yup it understands and believes in the original stories but also embraces telling its own version.
BRO he shows him twisted memories of obviously fake rejection then hits him with the REAL memory as a finisher????????
Brainiac is already a Gold Medalist Gaslighter. Gotta love it
This Brainiac is more diabolical than the usual ones that destroy Krypton and collect data, and scary enough he reminds me of Belos more and more with his voice and his twisting of the truth. Lois while in tears: "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Clark. For everything!"
Brainiac: "None of this was your fault, Miss Lane. You didn't killed the Last Son of Krypton. I did!"
Wait, black mercy? Isn't that a reference to that plant from the Alan Moore story where Supes is stuck inside a what-if scenario where Krypton doesn't explode?
I always LOVED that episode in JLU too, one of the only adaptions Moore trully loved.
For the man who has everything
hel that seems to be what happens to clark at the end, much like that story: trapped in a dream version of his life on Kryypton. In this case, so that brainiac can control his body while he's trapped in the fantasy
But this Black Mercy is a computerized to alter the mind for Brainiac to use
Braniac just pulled an Orochimaru.
At least Brainiac did it faster and better.
Oroshimaru needed a Curse and to groom a 12 year old Emo boy.
@WindyREDPanda true, not to mention more efficiently.
Brainiac voice is just so charismatically sinister. Truly perfect for a villain that cannot express emotion through facial form.

This show never fails to amaze me. It deserves an Emmy in my opinion.
Oh hell nah this is like upgrade 2018 where stem took over that guys brain and essentially trapped him in his own consciousness while essentially puppeting his body top ten horror scenarios fr
Yeah, I thought the same. Especially at the moment when Clark sees his Kryptonian family.
Now this is by far the best iteration of Braniac to date. Played with Superman’s mind, had him dancing in the palm of his hand, right before hitting him with the truth and using that against him in order to finally hijack his body. This build up showcases a perfect demonstration of how good Braniac is at manipulating and controlling minds.
The biggest concern isn't whether Lois can free Clark or not
Its whether she can do so before Brainiac could ruin Superman's reputation
Saving his mind is a big job, the reputation that would take lots of time if Waller and Lex don't back track to cover up there mistakes
Like the inconclusive final of "Superman: the Animated Series" when Darksied also manipulated Clark and went to conquer Earth, but opened his eyes when he saw Lois.
Man, I really wanted to see how Superman could regain his reputation.
Its the Black Mercy from The Man Who Has Everything
Braniac may have control over Clark’s body, but he can’t control Clark’s undying spirit to help people. It’s like in the Teen Titans episode “Titans East: Part 2”, where Brother Blood tries to find the “piece” that makes Cyborg resist him . . . It’s not in Clark’s biology. It’s not his body or his even his mind that resists Braniac’s influence . . . It’s the sheer willpower of his spirit. His spirit exists on a plain FAR beyond Braniac’s control. It’s the same reason Kara manages to maintain her personality and consciousness in spite of Braniac’s control.
Even if Lois and Clark don’t remember each other (As teased in the TV spot for the next episode), Clark’s willpower to help people, especially Lois, is an unstoppable aspect of his character, which in turn ignites his “Super Charged” state. Lois’s love for Clark and Clark’s super charged willpower are the key to them escaping Braniac’s clutches.
Clark’s soul may bruise, but it will not break. It is an aspect of his character that I truly admire, especially in MAWS’s take on the character.
Good reference
I'm glad they're making Brainiac more of a villain too but I feel like what isn't being appreciated enough is how he developed a really convincing argument: That Clark "weakened" himself by essentially being forced to open up about who he was.
Lois jumping off the roof just to pry open Clark's privacy and personal secrets. Clark giving in to the notion despite never wanting to reveal his secrets just so he could receive the acceptance and approval and sense of belonging that he craved from people--and ever since then, has been kind of taken for granted as both Clark Kent & Superman. Had Clark not felt this way at least a little, his mind probably would have shut down a lot of Brainiac's intrusive thoughts without issue, but the thoughts prevailed because despite how clearly manipulatory they were, there were still kernels of truth in the deceit. Enough tiny insecurities to snowball into an avalanche.
This shows how today's Brainiac is a professional gaslighter, using Clark's fears against him. This is why Batman is an important foil to Superman, one way or the other.
" I dont need your mind, just your body"
Buy me dinner first!
Lois is obviously going to snap him out of it.
Similarly to that one episode from Justice League Unlimited, I think Clark is going to have to let 'Krypton' die in order to escape Braniac's control
Yes, he will let Krypton, even his own real family die if it means escaping from Brainiac and saving the world. Lois will do anything even if she has to go to Gotham City.
The ending fake memory definitely gives "for the man who has everything" vibes. Hope it is as heart wrenching when Clark leaves ideal dream like world for reality.
This Brainiac did a far better job taking over Clark's mind, unlike that game.
**Superman flying through rings**
"Please make it stop!"
Truthfully, I really, really hope this doesn’t end the way most mind control scenarios end, where people appeal to their feelings, claiming their hurt feelings are wrong, to take back control, etc. I find it just more interesting when a foe is genuinely defeated, vs a last minute appeal to emotions.
Yeah, I love that this version of Brainiac clearly does understand emotions and love and knows how to exploit them.
He worked with Clark's feelings, not against them, in order to subvert Clark's will. That makes this villain one of the truly more credible manipulators.
@@dungeonguy88 Are you sure about that? This feels like the generic super villain to me, claiming to understand psychology, but just being blatantly evil. You can’t tell someone you’re there to help, then show off a bunch of slaves and beat up your adopted daughter, and expect them to respect you.

7:22 Evil Costume Switcheroo!
Maaaan. This is Brainiac. He is so nasty and cunning. He perfectly understands the weaknesses of the core of Superman's personality. In general, the original Brainiac was more primitive in its actions and goals. The only thing I remember is in an old cartoon about the Justice League, he merged with Luther into a single being and it was already more original and clever. There is essentially a similar concept here, but he does not unite with the enemy of superman, but becomes superman himself.
