It's such a fine tune. Judee really set the standard for how this gem needs to be approached on a live TV performance of hers I came across on TH-cam. Thanks for those very kind words.
This is just beautiful and inspiring. I just listened to this song sung by Judee Sill about 5 times today, and now you have played it so beautifully on your bass. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely arrangement.
I understand why you would choose to give Judee's treatment of this particular song multiple listens. I think that the reverence & feeling with which she performs this tune just can't be faked, & hence the reason I was drawn to it in the first place. Her composition & treatment are as expressive as any aria, & achingly beautiful. I'm pleased knowing that I was able to capture a bit of those elements for you in this performance. It's her masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the kind words.
I agree, it's a truly great melody, & Judee's way of stretching the time & laying back the rhythm was the first thing that caught my ear upon first hearing her live performance of this hauntingly beautiful & emotive tune. There's absolutely no way for anyone to possibly notate the way that this melody flows, like liquid. Yes, this composition feels very much like a gift, to use your word. We're all so much better off that it exists... & thank you for your kind words regarding my attempt to play it.
Potemkin steals the show every time! : ) Thanks for the kind words. Yes, Judee just killed this song. Such a gem. Her live version from a British television spot is the definitive performance for me... no post-performance production, just pure human expression at its best.
That's definitely how I feel about Judee's composition. If a little of that manages to come through in this performance then of course I'm delighted. The tune is just infused with feeling... and wonder.
Absolutely wonderful, a faithful arrangement with a ton of feel. Really, really lovely. I loved the thought you put into the description as well. I too discovered Judee Sill quite late (in my case, just a few months ago) but am glad I have. You've inspired me to have a go at this as well (with my trusty Fender Jazz). The quality of your work also seemed to appeal to the cat 🙂!
I of course had to have some way of laying down an accompaniment part for this arrangement, which in this case was done using a looper. I edited out that first pass in order to get straight to the amazing melody, but even the accompaniment is a treat to play. Would make a good duo with another instrument just taking on that role. Thanks for the kind words, Tony.
It's such a beautifully conceived piece. Judee's live performance of this is one of the purest musical statements of humanity at its finest I've ever encountered. She showed the way. Thanks so much!
Yeah, the original just floored me when I first heard it. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I'd never heard of it, or of Judee Sill for that matter. Once I became aware of its existence, however, I just had to do something with it... or at least try. : )
It's a masterfully written song. A gem. I felt as though I really had little choice in the matter... had to learn it! Thanks for the kind words, Doug. Means a great deal, given the source.
It's a beautiful song on every level, I agree... so I just had to try & do something with it. There are some tunes, so compelling, you just have to play them... or at least try! Thanks for the kind words.
No, but I could write one out relatively quickly. However, I will add that one of my favorite things about this tune is the way Judee lays the time back on the melody. It's an integral part of the tune... and I imagine COMPLETELY defies all attempts at notation, which of course is part of the beauty.
@@stevegray5996 It's in A minor (C Major) & the bridge is Eb (starts on the IV chord tho, which is Ab), then back to the original key, just like the beginning. There's a nice version that Madison Cunningham does that's maybe a step higher, give or take. Her guitar has a really odd sound, though, with a rather stylized sounding spring reverb & with all kinds of annoying amp buzz, but her voice is, as one would expect, angelic.
Absolutely beautiful, great job played brilliantly with respect and skill.

Ah, Holy Breath...
Brilliant. Lovely haunting melody captured by your superb bass ( and your gift)

This is perfect, my friend.
Thanks so much. It's certainly a wonderful piece of writing... the sort that inspires one to attempt to embody a bit of the spirit of the original.
Bravo, Forest! A beautiful song, a beautiful arrangement, played flawlessly. wonderful!

Love it! Do you have a chart for the accompaniment?
