In Mexico I spent some time learning the Yucatec Maya language, which is indigenous to the Yucatán Peninsula and has been spoken in this area for thousands of years by the Mayan people. Even though lots of people still speak it, the younger generation is forgetting it and it was really interesting to go around and try and speak what I could speak. If you are interested in learning to speak the amazing Mayan language and help preserve Mayan culture, or just if you want to learn Spanish online or in-person with good local organizations, you can check out the schools I learned with here:

hey I'm from Yucatan and from my perspective....I think the reason the people aren't enthusiastic to speak is because (myself included) it is very rare for people to speak Maya now in Yucatan, we know a few words here and there but not enough to carry a full conversation... unfortunately it is becoming a forgotten language. This video definitely motivates me to learn more because I don't want it to be forgotten.

I know someone who is quite fluent in Latin. She wrote a Limerick in Latin (when she was like 17) that rhymes and makes sense.
      "Puella in turri vivebat
      ad quam quidam princeps vadebat.
      'Demitte capillum!'
      Sed venit ad nillum
      quod crinem breviorem habebat."
(I hope I spelled everything right, my Latin is very rusty.)
Basically it translates to: a girl lived in a tower, and one day a prince arrived. "Let down your hair!" But it didn't lead to anything because her hair was too short.

He is appalling unacknowledging of the fact that while he receives praise for learning this language, the community to which it belongs is being discouraged for doing the same thing. These are good reasons to criticize him, especially if, like me, you are a fan of his other videos. I encourage everyone to put pressure on X to do better. Amazing I always love your videos! Mayan is very ancient and hard language to learn so I am proud of the progress. Just a fun fact though, the Mayan wasn't an empire, it was more of independent city-states (mini kingdoms of sorts) like Tikal, Chichen Itza, and Copan to name just a few. The Aztec was more of an empire in the sense of the word lol.

It would just come off to us as an overly anxious person or other things.. lol Mannerisms are a huge part of speaking the language as well. Like when I learned French I found out it’s very laid back and it was common to pause with uuuh or eem in sentences like you’re thinking about the word. Be confident because you are doing great 👍🏻
