    So much truth.
I started with the goal of going as cheap as I possibly can and while I'm happy with some of the choices I made, there are other areas where I'm now planning on upgrading. Cheaper isn't always better.

Hi, I think what's most important when building a fishroom is if you can maintain it. Monthly costs can get you into trouble. That is something to consider carefully. Everyone can save up to buy a Porsche but maintaining it is often the tricky part. ( all costs considered).
Great fishroom and awesome to see your dream has come true. Have a wonderfull 2019.

This is a great and tidy looking fish room! One of the best I have seen! So many fish rooms on the internet look junky and messy or so mismatched and it detracts from the beauty of the tanks with all the clutter about. Yes and again, this hobby isn’t cheap if you are all in, but this is a fantastic video. Subscribed!

Thank you for what you do. I got back into the aquarium hobby a couple years ago it was a garage sale 29 gallon tank. I wish I had a clue where I was going. 43 tanks rewired the house to accommodate the load, air plumbed around my family room, racks, stands lights! oh my God you're not kidding. I'm going to invest now in a good space heater get rid of 40 or so heaters I wish I had an original design in mind when I started this project I definitely would have gone Auto change system. I think I'm going to go stress out in the corner now about how much I've spent. keep up the great videos

Somehow, I missed this post until today. As your father I do remember those wonderful trips to the fish store(s) along with your brother Matt. I guess I never knew the impact it had on you but am glad it did. Back then I believed as a parent you need to find enjoyable things you can do with and teach your children about. That turned out to be T-Ball/baseball, baseball card collecting, camping and the outdoors, a pet - cat(s) by your mother’s choice, a backyard swimming pool and the neighborhood gatherings of friends, and of course some fish tanks in various shapes and sizes. In the later, I found colorful beauty, tranquility in viewing (most tanks) and the amazing ability to watch them grow while in many cases changing colors. The added joy about this as a parent is the continued gratification of watching (from a distance intentionally) as you have gotten your family/boys not only involved in these activities but have superseded my involvement and knowledge by a remarkable distance. Very proud of you and your boys for developing positive family functions and values. In closing, as TM Aquatics mentioned, the overall expense is somewhat irrelevant because it could have been spent on a couple of exotic vacations which lasted only a few weeks. So, don't beat yourself up about it, enjoy!

Been checking out all the aquarium channels recently as I’m getting back into the hobby after a 15 year hiatus. Loved the breakdown of costs and the room looks awesome. I know that exact feeling of my first trip to the fish store and walking into the fish room. I had that exact same experience. That was in 1976. I’m hoping to get moved out of Cali this year and go where I can get just the right house to have my fish room or fish house. I’m going to actually build all my tanks out of acrylic. I’ve subscribed so I can keep informed. Thanks for the great video.

I can tell you're happy with your fish room and all the tanks you have upstairs, too. I was actually surprised it was all way less than $20 thousand (excluding fish, plants etc). I have a 29 gal and a 16 gal. Just the plants cost me at least $300 because if one didn't make it, I'd replace it with something else. The fish don't seem to be much of an expense at all, but they are my favorite part!
You ought to know I got a real deal on my trumpet snails because they hitchhiked in on a plant or two. Anyone want to buy some? LOL

I appreciate the information you provided. I also dream of a fishroom and while I am not at the point of my life where I can actually build one, I have been planning it for years. I was actually surprised at how low the cost was. I have friends who spend 10's of thousands on ATVs, motorcycles, boats and other expensive toys. None of those have the potential to earn money back so from a value point of view a fish room is a good deal. Besides my friends frequently invite me to come play with their toys and I would have a place to drink beer with them during shoulder the shoulder seasons. Love your vids - thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this breakdown! I was keeping a running total on how much I'd spent on fish so far (not even a proper fishroom, just a mild case of MTS) and I was shocked. I'd even bought all my tanks second hand, didn't buy or build stands (that's next), and have very common fish... but the plants have been killing me. And I've been killing some of them, which hurts :P
    Still, you're living the dream!

    Very good breakdown.
For me the most important thing to do when you start building the fishroom is to make sure you are on the same page with the missus.
The second most important thing is to ask yourself whether you will have the time to maintain the fishroom as Jason said in his previous video.
The third most important thing is to plan carefully and meticulously. I have done a huge mistake of thinking that the floor of my 2nd floor apartment would hold the weight of 13000 pounds (6000kgs). I was dead wrong and had to dismantle to wooden racks again to install IPN180 beams to support the weight.
Well done Jason and thanks for sharing this video with us! Good luck for any future projects :)

I actually was suprised it was "so cheap". I actually love the look of your room, the stands look nice, the lids and lights are nice, etc. I use to do photography for a hobby, and now I do photo/video full time. I'm also a competitive long distance Rifle shooter. It's not uncommon for guys to show up with a $15,000 setup, the RV they bought to go to matches, not to mention match fees and ammo ($6-8 a shot, .50BMG), and they go to like 12 a year! Photography is the same, easy to drop $10,000 into stuff that'll fit in a backpack. I've found even my friends that dirbike, or restore cars, or whatever, spend a bit of cash to. I guess it depends on your income, so it may be easier to spend $11,000 for some vs others, but again, for your quality level of a fishroom, I am impressed!

Yup. That sounds about right. I've spend close to 3 grand this year on 15 tanks, which includes, all that goes inside and outside. My PG&E bill is at $150 a month. Used to be $75. Will see what happens when I power-up all the new tanks I purchased last month. Lucky, I'm single for now. Sending positive vibes your way. Thanks for sharing.

I'm currently building my first fish room, it's just an insulated shed with 11 tanks but it's only cost me just over 1000 so far, got all the tanks on Facebook with the stands and running some cheap LED cabinet lights and a cheap oil heater, everything's on sponge filters with one big air pump, real simple and budget but it works!

Thanks for sharing. I know when I had just one tank (125gal salt/reef setup) that it was pricey but an entire fish room WOW!!! One other thing that you might want to touch on would be the amount of time (approximately) one should consider investing each week taking care of for a fish room. Not to mention what do you do when you go on family vacations? Who takes care of the fish room? I really think I want to do eventually but will put more thought into the planning of all costs associated with to include backups and who I'd trust to babysit first. Thanks again and I really like your channel. Keep up the great job!

    Nice video.
Finally! A video about the REAL cost of a fish room. This (so called hobby I call it MY addiction) is very expensive once you get past your 3rd tank (I say this because once you get beyond your 3rd tank your thinking and buying bigger than 10 or 20 gallon tanks). MTS is sooo expensive and people don't realize just how much they have spent until they sit down and really think about it, or put it on paper and see the totals.
So my 15 tanks (5-5 gallon Betta tanks, 3-20 gallon, 3-29 gallon, 2-40 breeders, and 2-75 gallon tanks) MTS addiction I figure has cost me around 5k so far. I think it is worth it, I love it. Problem is... I Need More TANKS! MTS never stops, your always thinking of a way to fit in just 1 more tank into the smallest of spaces.

      @PrimeTimeAquatics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Your probably closer to 25 grand adding all the fish substrate and other things you forgot about!?! But like you said it's all a personal choice and at the end of the day it all makes you and your family happy and will continue to bring you Joy for years to come! I'm so jealous of basements , I live in Florida so basements are completely obsolete...lol
