- I went out on the first of June, on the Sarawak holiday of Gawai Dayak. My wife and I went visiting homes of friends and family during this yearly celebration. We visited houses in the Simpok and Kerumboi villages, some 40 minutes from Kuching.
Gawai Dayak is a Thanksgiving festival celebrated in Sarawak by the people of the Malaysian state of Sarawak. During this festival, the locals would travel back home and spend time with their family and friends.

Gawai is a grand celebration. The Iban long houses along Rejang River Sibu were "stayin' alive" during Gawai eve and Gawai time. Many happenings but you must know how to drink Iban home made authentic Tuak. Last night, we enjoyed a typical Iban couples wedding reception at a hotel in Kuching. Really entertaining ! I sincerely hope that Iban cultures - Language and ways of life will be maintained forever by future generations. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban!!!💪💪💪💪💪

Wow Nick! You went visiting my relatives in Kerumboi and Simpok 😂That's my uncle's house in Simpok with my cousin manning the bar. Also the first house in Kerumboi belong to close relatives 😅 Meanwhile I was celebrating Gawai in Bintulu at an Iban longhouse being unable to return to kampung due to some commitments. Happy Gawai!

Gawai is the time to indulge after a year long hard work in the fields for the indigenous people in the olden days. Still is, I'd say... except that most of the farms has change to many other careers.

Oh wow Kerumboi and Simpok...both are just around the corner of my kampung....Kerumboi is our descendant kampung as their grandparents or great grandparents were originated from my kampung. We are the kampung asal or origin...I wonder if you noticed that people from both kampung used slightly different dialect... as Kerumboi is of Bisitang descendant and Simpok is Bisapug's .... just for your fun fact.

You really "have to" drink a few beers on that day, hehe. The first time I attended Gawai, I had to sleep for a while at my wife's uncle's house as I had just arrived in Kuching that very morning and the jet lag and all those given cans of golden liquid were too much!
Oh yes. One or two beers is a must during Gawai!
