@pweiner7597 It was better, IMHO, when it was more vulnerable. Her voice is so big, even when she pulls back, it is still overwhelming up against a song like that.
If Kev was just keeping a straightforward beat I could see the argument, I remember playing the clarinet and keeping time with my foot. But Kev is creating complicated beats, with multiple different types of sounds and playing expert level cello. While Mitch and Scott are my faves, (of course I adore them all) especially vocally, Kevin is hands down the most talented and skillful member of PTX in my opinion.
This has a permanent place in my all-time top 5 Pentatonix videos. Kirstie's emotional and powerful lead, Avi's solo sections highlighting his upper range, the part towards the end where everything drops away and each member comes in separately to join the others, Kevin's celloboxing and final softer solo after Kirstie's powerhouse finale - everything in this song just comes together perfectly for me. I believe this was the 2nd (or perhaps 3rd?) time that Kevin celloboxed with the group in a video - pretty sure the first one was Radioactive, in collaboration with Lindsey Stirling. FYI: the "theme" of the video was of an old-time family portrait, where everyone had to sit still for minutes at a time to avoid blurring on the old, slow film that was being used at the time. This was especially hard on Scott, who sings with his hands almost as much as his voice. There are a couple of shots where you can see Scott's arms jerk as he starts to move his hands and then remembers he's not supposed to - I'm still wondering if they duct-taped his hands to the chairs so he couldn't move them!
If you think that it helps time keep time, You guys need to check out Kevin's Fifth from Pentatonix tours at Christmastime! Kevin will blow your mind with the cello-boxing!
There are more recent performances that are just as good if not better in my opinion. You can find every song from the Hollywood Bowl 2022 livestream on TH-cam.
This is my favorite PTX song. And I am a huge fan, so that says a lot. The harmonies, the cello, the whole package. Poor Scott trying so hard to keep his arms still.lol. you can see his elbows move as he clutches the chairs. They made him do that, so he'd be still.
If you want to hear Kevin sing for a whole song, try the official video of "Run To You." It's an original, written by Avi and Kevin. There's no lead singer, not even different people taking the lead in different parts of the song, the way they frequently do. There's also no percussion; it's just glorious five part harmony throughout. And because their audio editer, Ed Boyer, is a genius, any time the camera is looking at one person rather than the entire group, that person's voice is just slightly more distinct than the others. It's very subtle, doesn't mess up the balance at all; in fact, you don't even notice it if you aren't looking. But the effect is real, and it means that you can hear Kevin singing quite clearly.
Kevin is a musical genius. He has played at Carnegie Hall on the cello and the saxophone as a high school student. He plays at least 3 instruments. This song really showcases the way ptx layers and the wall of sound that they are known for. I enjoyed the K.O. that was delivered.
This song is great. I believe Scott's blonde hair was done for their Daft Punk Medley. Great reaction. Thank you for recognizing Avi's bass underneath the harmonies. I think it often goes unnoticed, though it always captures my ear. You should check out his solo work, and you will be surprised by his range.
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast The lyrics and strong vocals in Avi's "Change on the Rise" hit a special chord with guys, especially. My favourite of his is still the 7 Layers Sessions recording of "All is Well."
Christina was incredible in the movie with Cher, Burlesque. Kirstie has the lead on several songs, including Be My Eyes(an original), Rather Be, and her own songs, Break a Little and Naked.
Are you assuming that he just ‘keeps time’ while beatboxing, even without the cello? You haven’t seen the half of it. I think somebody said check out Kevin’s Fifth from the Christmas livestream from a few years ago. ‘A Kiss From A Rose’ is another where he celloboxes. ‘Shallow’ is a good one too.
Re: beatboxing and playing cello at the same time - it is akin to a drummer. Drummers have to keep time, while all 4 limbs are usually doing 4 different things - all within the same beat. So, one hand is working the hi-hat in conjunction with a foot, while the other foot is working the bass (and if there is a double bass pedal, that adds another dimension), while the other hand is working the snare, toms and other cymbals. And even though it may be the same basic time signature/beat, the rhythms for each aspect (bass, snare, cymbals, toms) may all be different. All of that coordination seems seamless but when you think about it, is incredibly complex. Same with Cello boxing - playing the cello requires one skill set while the beatboxing require a completely different skillset - all put together into one performance. It's impressive.
Scott experimented in bleaching his hair for a while in 2013 and 2014; you can also see his white hair in the official video of "Daft Punk Mix." They wanted this to look like a family portrait, the kind where people had to stay perfectly still for long periods to give the camera enough time to capture the image, so they decided to remain as motionless as possible in the video. But Scott uses his hands a LOT when he sings - he had to literally grab onto the backs of two chairs to keep his hands still.
This song was writted by Ian Axel, Chad King and Mike Campbell from Great Big Sea. It was released by Axel on his Solo album back in 2011. Christina Aguilera joined them for a re-release.
AJ -- Christina Aguilera had absolutely NOTHING to do with writing or producing this song. It was written by Ian Axel, Chad King, and Mike Campbell in 2011. TWO years later, Christina asked if she could record the song. It was re-released with her singing, but accompanied by the original team who wrote and sang it. It became her biggest hit in many, many years, so it's a go-to song for her as she ages and doesn't have any current chart toppers to draw from.
So glad y'all reacted to more PTX. My favorite group/band out there. They are so amazing. So talented. I recommend that you react to Kevin's Fifth. It is an amazing portion of a live concert where Kevin shows off his talents. It is pure fire. Also, Scott introduces Kevin and tells how he came to be a part of PTX. Very impressed with Kevin. He does his cello boxing and is phenomenal. I'm including the link for you. Please react to this for me. It will be a bucket list item to check off if you would. (Yes, I have a terminal illness and will not be here for much longer.) Thanks for a great reaction and I look forward to more from y'all!! This is in my top 10 PTX videos, good reaction, guys! Please catch up with Avi Kaplan's solo career, he is remarkable! His powerful "Change on the Rise" was totally unexpected ~ His " Avi Kaplan, All Is Well, 7 Layers Session # 126" is pure beauty ~ and his jamming "When I'm A Fool, Live at Sunset Sound" is so cool! These are just a small sample of Avi's versatile, amazing talent ~ Thanks !
Thanks for the reactions. If you want to really see Kevin Olusola’s (beatboxer /cellist) taken, check out his cover of Marian Hill’s DOWN. Not to be missed. I think you all will be surprised.
I personally think it's about Kirstie & Avi. They had a brief relationship in the middle of a friendship. I also wondered if they were getting an inkling that Avi was thinking of quitting.
I wish Avi had more opportunities to shine. He has a beautiful 5 octave range and should have been given more time. Kevin is Uber talented. He is actually playing the cello, beat boxing and singing at the same time. He created celloboxing. Credit when due.😅
I would certainly hear the percussion while I played, using it to keep myself on-time and marking my place in the music. However, I would think that creating the percussion while playing would be something entirely different. Either way, it looks, and sounds, entirely too cool.
Sorry. I tried making it to the end of this video, but I had to stop at around 12:20 after the term “vocal background NOISES” was implemented. Ensemble music is the amalgamation of Sound, not Noise. (Unless of course we’re discussing Thrash Metal or Industrial). Btw, how did four AM radio baseball commentator wannabes manage to slough their way toward posting music video analyses on a digital format? That’s incredible! 🤣
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast , speaking of your mom, why did she scream your name while I watched her grin from behind the monkey cage at the zoo last night? (I too can go just as Elementary School as you’d like, believe me.)

Definitely. Avi’s highs in this song are nothing compared to what you hear in one of his latest releases, “Healing”. And then in his latest, “Feel Alright” he gives us great lows, both in the lead and in the backing vocals he does. His operatic and classical training helped him to develop that incredible range, clarity and resonance.
The song is actually a Great Big World song written by them, Xtina heard it and offered to feature. She had GBW on The Voice to perform with her.
I liked the song when Great Big World wrote it and had a successful single with it before Christina Aguilera asked to perform it with them.
