Stagger Lee is actually an old traditional song, with hundreds of versions. But there sure as sh*t isn't another version like this. Nick Cave is a real artist. His songs can be hard, lyrical, poetic, soft, mournful.... and he bends genres constantly.
I see you discovered Nick Cave. Wishing you a nice journey. I discovered him in 1989 and I have honestly not missed a single concert since. The best way to describe Cave and his work is to imagine that Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen had a child! You might have heard "Red Right Hand". Since this is the beginning of the journey, maybe also try "Jubilee Street" live from Copenhagen, or if you feel like going into the past a bit try "The Mercy Seat" because Cave is also a poet!
I’ve always loved the track The Carny - it’s off the wall. It’s like a circus nightmare. During the Push The Sky Away tour he had a children’s choir perform with him - he had to send them home before performing this.
and really everything 100% live... but you have to go on a concert at night... the concerts on a festival at day for example are not half as good as at night....
I saw them twice touring Dig Lazarus, Dig! Once at Brixton Academy. Best gig I ever went to. AND I was at the last ever Queen concert in 1986, so that’s saying something!!! Your mind will be blown
From the album "Murder ballads", released in 1996. By now, Nick has a song for almost every situation that might occur in your life, but to my knowledge he has never killed another person. Simply because that's not what good guys do, I hope. There's a song about the electric chair called "The Mercy Seat", or one about the relief you get from crying called "The Weeping Song". One of my early favourites is about the birth of Elvis, called "Tupelo", from mid 80's. Nick Cave is still creating some of the most valueable musical and lyrical content ever to been procuced thus far. Enjoy, and thanks for shining a light on Mr Cave.
Sorry to hear about life shitting on you - but so happy that you've discovered Nick and the BS. If you liked Zappa you are going to love Nick - he is an absolute genius and still pumping out brilliant music (Carnage - 2022 just great). 'The Mercy Seat' should be your next stop. or 'Hand of God' from his recent 2022 tour - live at Hanging Rock. It really doesn't matter - everything he releases is just gold.
If you liked that, listen to the album this is from: Murder Ballads. The whole things is brilliant, including a duets with P J Harvey and Kylie Minogue.
It's a remake of an old murder ballad folk song, but it is almost completely rewritten by Nick Cave, as it has always been the case with those song-tales. Another example is Henry Lee, from the same album (Murder Ballads, 1995, which is literally an album of murder ballads written by Nick with some remakes) or Tupelo from another previews album. Nick Cave is very much in contact with tradition and you can see that a lot in his lyrics. One of my favourites is Up Jumped The Devil (like the Robert Johnson song? Yes, but it's a completely different song). People say listen to Black Sabbath if you wanna listen to 'demonic' stuff, but I say better listen to that 😂.
Any one who hasn't seen it, check out Nick doing this song at Glastonbury 2013, just EPIC, fucking absolutely EPIC. He had the audience spellbound. Most of them weren't even born when he started performing. It's hard to believe he did 'Into My Arms', what a contrast.
There's sooooo much to discover with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, it's hard to know what to recommend to you next. But I would say the live version of Jubilee Street is pretty essential.
He he!! I actually had my ear pods in so that I could hear the words, Lee! :D That was some performance! I was actually live on a youtube channel earlier - 30 seconds of fame Lol!!
I think you’d like another of Nick’s musical combos - Grinderman. Here’s a couple of tracks from UK TV…….. th-cam.com/video/iBrm3OP_3dY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LhiAXpXJ3xXD7jsm. th-cam.com/video/ZyqD31fuOQs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=H5qE9DHXJpVT0Zk4 You’re right, there is a huge volume of work. Stagger Lee is from Murder Ballads and the whole album is well worth a listen, but so is everything else. He began in the early 80’s in The Birthday Party - give Big Jesus Trashcan or Release The Bats a listen. Then explore as the mood takes you. There is Nick Cave for every mood!
Stagger Lee is a standard of jazz, blues and folk - a very old and much-recorded song, although Nick Cave appears just to be using the name for his own version of the story. I never really expected to hear Nick here. He is a wild man, albeit not as wild as he was in the early 80s when he fronted The Birthday Party - check out Release the Bats or King Ink, fr'instance.
Nick Cave's whole career is worth checking out, as are the side projects of all the Bad Seeds. Try to start with the early stuff and go through progressively! Nick's first band The Birthday Party (previously known as The Boys Next Door) was explosive dangerous art/punk/rock/darkness
Its a reimagining of an old skool folk song.. rewritten. This is great, though prefer the Glastonbury performance for the crowd interaction. Nick is Aussie legend, 40 years of brilliance!

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat
First time I’ve seen anyone do a Nick Cave song . Really hope you do more . They don’t all have this swearing lol . Try listening to Into Your Arms .

I sure did. What an introduction huh?? This was amazing. Thank you for the suggestions.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds are probably the greatest live band of the last 30 years.
You never got to see Cardiacs then. 😁
They were. Not anymore.
@@Diecastclassicistthey have an album out in August. I suspect a tour may be in the works
Omg - I've been listening to this forever. I love Nick Cave
Man i miss old school Bad Seeds!!!
Nick Cave can save your life, if you let him
I’ve always loved the track The Carny - it’s off the wall. It’s like a circus nightmare.
During the Push The Sky Away tour he had a children’s choir perform with him - he had to send them home before performing this.
Followed Nick Cave since the 80s.
Seeing Nick perform live is a must see. His relationship with his fans is unparalleled.

I heard of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds but never listened to any of his songs before. I can’t believe I never have. This is awesome!
Yeah this blew my fucking mind hahah I'm so ready to hear more now
@@L33Reacts Me, too! I have to thank the person who requested this!
You're all in for a real treat.
@@mals4125 it seems so! This was a great find. And it's a deep rabbit hole... I'm with it!!
Watch some Grinderman if you think that is messed. Nick Cave is the best. Looking forward to seeing him again in Australia on 25 April.

There's something about Nick that is so sexy.... absolute legend.
OK! I've heard an old version of Stagger Lee, which doesn't even resemble this one! I was totally surprised, but enjoyed it. 😮

"I don't even know what the fuck to call this." Yes, that is correct.
listen to his old deathrock band The Birthday Party . that’s when i first fell in love with his music.
So glad you enjoyed it, Lee. I thought you would!
Thank you William A.
Nick Cave, great fit for this channel i think.

No one can keep living like he did back then.
@@mals4125 That is true.
Should react to the Grateful Dead version - and perhaps the Mississippi John Hurt version.

It might be a ‘trifle too Satanic’ for me.
Big fan of the OG stagger Lee and grateful dead version, but this is not my cup of tea lol.
